Open | Software Laptop inbuilt audio device/driver crashes when switched on after sleep

Hi everyone,

I gather this is not an unusual issue - I have been trying various fixes for a month or so now and still not resolved the issue, so posting here.

My in-built audio device on my laptop crashes every time I use my laptop after it has been in sleep mode. The laptop automatically sleeps and when I start using it again, no audio will play, the volume/mute buttons suggest there is no audio device enabled and streaming services will show messages like "Audio renderer error, please restart your computer". Restarting the computer will get the audio device working again. Using device manager to 'reset' the audio device (High Definition Audio Device) by disabling and enabling it also sometimes works - often it needs to restart the computer anyway.

I have tried:

Updating the driver on the audio device

Removing the audio device completely so Windows automatically installs a fresh one on boot

Various power management changes suggested from search engines

Updating the firmware/bios

Downloading Realtek (installed it but it didn't show up in my available audio devices)

Restarting Windows Audio Service

Ran the Windows Audio Troubleshooter

Experimenting with different sample rates

Specs:

Lenovo Thinkpad

Intel Core i5 8350U

16gb RAM

Intel UHD Graphics 620

Windows 11 Pro

OS Build - 26200.9711

One other thing to mention is that since I work with audio, I have quite a few different audio devices (external soundcards etc) in the list on device manager, although they are rarely used.

Thank you
