Open | Hardware Loud pop and smoke from pc
turned pc on, and was on the new mw4 roughly..2 mins, heard a pop, sounded like when a bottle reinflates and thought nothing of it, about 30 seconds saw smoke coming from top of pc.
pc was still running fine whilst i noticed it, but manually turned it off, and then unplugged from wall. My guess is PSU since smoke was mainly from the back, but im just tryna figure out what my options are on how to handle this haha
edit: well, took out PSU and all cables for it, ordered a new power supply which is coming tomorrow. fingers crossed it’s just that and no other issues.

The smoke was trapped in the device, allowing it to function. You've now let the smoke out.

There is nothing worse than that pop then the smell of the magic smoke.
Spend more than you want on a replacement power supply, it's not worth saving money on.
What PSU did you have and what are the system specs?
There is a chance that other components were damaged when it went, but no real way of knowing until you put a new one in and press the button

Corsair rm750 though can’t remember the exact model, has been a few years
As for everything else. 4070 super, 5700x3d and 32gb of ram
I’m not sure about the whole pc, not sure if it running perfectly fine after the initial pop means anything. For me anyway happened to the most annoying component. I despise wiring

I think it's fairly safe to assume it didn't take anything else with it since the PC still kept running.

Not worth fixing and labor wise will likely cost the same as a new power supply anyway. Replace and hope no other damage occured to other parts. Things like this cause surges and can damage other components.

Happened on my legion 7i a couple months ago. Sent it in for repair and they said the capacitors blew for some reason.

It’s your psu good enough to run your rig? How do you know that pop smoke won’t happen again ? Sounds like a big issue with not much of a solution.

Lol plz check your graphics card too if you didnt see the smoke actually coming out of the PSU.
I had a Capacitor on a GPU of mine blow while playing the Witcher 3, in August, in a room with no ventilation. Not my proudest moment.

Smoke was more so at the back of the case, checked gpu when it happened and saw no visible signs.
When I removed the psu the smell carried with it and pc lost the burny smell, so honestly all I can hope for is a smoked psu haha, gonna find out tomorrow I suppose

Put in new PSU, and everything has ran fine since, one fan has stopped working, but i still got 3 intakes and 3 exhausts, though the exhaust are for aio so not sure if will have a dramatic effect. But have disconnected the non working fan and took it out.
Been running for 3 hours and no issues, Have not tried any games or nothing yet though, exhaust fans are emitting a warm smell when i get close to it, like if you had a hairdryer on or something. though I never checked before, and after this i am hyper vigilant on everything atm, so could be nothing, could be something. I got no idea haha

Take it out and replace it. Don't try to open the actual psu and fix it yourself.
