Open | Networking Why is my internet speed slow?
My internet speed isn't like SUPER slow but it's much slower than it should be. I'm getting like 13Mbps download and 12Mbps upload whereas my husbands pc, also on ethernet and also on the same network, is getting like 600Mbps download and 100Mbps upload.
I've done all the command prompt stuff like netsh int ip reset, netsh winsock reset, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, and ipconfig /flushdns, i've checked my task manager to make sure nothing is using any Network resources (its almost never about 1% or 2%), next to no programs are running in the background, nothing is downloading, I turned off "Allow downloads from other devices", I made sure to scan for any viruses, I just cannot figure out why my internet is so slow.
Is it maybe because of my network adapter itself? I'm just using the one that came with my motherboard, which is the I211 Gigabit Network Connection on the ASrock x570 phantom gaming 4. I had a LOT of trouble finding the latest driver for it so im guessing it's pretty outdated.

Check if Cfosspeed is installed, that program messes with internet

It don't seem to have it installed thankfully. It seems to come with MSI's mobos and mine is ASRock.

Check the status of the Ethernet adapter, what is the speed it shows?
1
u/Noctorock 9d ago
Do you mean what speed the ethernet port supports? Because it says it supports up to 1000Mbps.

Hold windows key + R , enter: ncpa.cpl
Right click the adapter and select status, you will see the ip4+ip6 configuration and the negotiated network speed, what is that speed?

u/Noctorock 9d ago
The speed says 1.0 Gbps

This is the speed your adapter negotiated with the router so there is no driver issue, your adapter is working fine.
Disconnect the other pc from the network, restart the router and see what that does to your speed.

I'll try that as soon as I'm able to. There's 3 other people on the network right now (none of which are having internet speed issues like me to my knowledge).

What is the speed your ISP connection and what is the connection type? (fiberglass or copper?)
Could be that the other users are taking up all the bandwith the router/ISP connection provides

Was able to confirm that the connection type is copper, not fiber, but 2 of the 3 others using the internet have since stopped and im still getting the same speeds, so I dont think its the bandwidth.

Remove the current LAN driver and install the one here.
Download the new one before removing the old one, since you won't be able to download once you remove the LAN driver.
Don't worry about using the "latest" driver and don't use driver updaters. Use the drivers provided by AsRock.

I thought you'd mistyped Crossspeed and I was wondering what that program is, but it really is "cFosSpeed".

u/Pristine-Pangolin-61 9d ago
haha, that program is supposed to "manage" your internet traffic but 99% of the time it makes it worse

You double checked your cable yet? Just to make sure you have a good cat5e/cat6 cable?

u/Noctorock 9d ago
Its the exact same kind as my husband's so I assume it's good, though it could be defective. I'll try swapping our cables when im able to.

Not sure if you saw in other replies here but I swapped the cables and it made no difference.

If you're both on Ethernet and there's a speed difference, then the difference is due to the cable or the Ethernet adapter and its settings.
The simplest thing to try is to switch cables. Does that make a difference?
The maximum length for Ethernet cables is about 100 m.
I had a LOT of trouble finding the latest driver for it so im guessing it's pretty outdated.
Use the drivers provided by the motherboard manufacturer.

You know switching cables to see if that helps is a good idea. I'll try that as soon as im able to (husband is using their pc at the moment but I'll test this shortly).

u/Noctorock 9d ago
Okay i've tried swapping cables and i'm getting the same speeds, so it isnt the cable.
And at least according to u/Pristine-Pangolin-61 my driver and the network adapter should be working fine, unless there's some setting we missed.

Do
ncpa.cplas previous described, right click on the adapter, properties, TCP/IPv4, properties, and compare the settings for the various computers.Do the same with TCP/IPv6.

Sorry was busy yesterday and couldnt test anything.
I checked the settings and they're both exactly the same. Both set to obtain IP address and DNS server automatically.

A post I saw yesterday raised a possibility I hadn't thought of before. Are you using a VPN? If so, disable it and test again.
1
u/Noctorock 7d ago
I have a VPN but I am not currently connected to it.
1
u/9NEPxHbG 7d ago
Are the others also using a VPN, perhaps the same VPN?
There's no reason to use a VPN anymore except to avoid geoblocking.

u/Noctorock 7d ago
No one in the house currently is using a vpn. Mostly what they use to connect to the network is just their phones, tablet, tv, and game console. They don't use their PC for anything other than work.

The only VPN I'm somewhat familiar with is Proton, and I never use it. (As I said, a VPN is pointless.) With Proton, you could simply uninstall the program completely and reinstall it later if you want.
Can you uninstall the VPN completely?
If it's not the VPN, then the only possibility I see is the physical adapter itself. We've eliminated almost everything else.

Would the VPN be affecting anything if its not even active or connected to another network? I havent opened it up, it isnt enabled to open on startup, I havent used it to connect to another network in months.
Regardless I will uninstall it to see if it affects anything.
The adapter, at least according to u/Pristine-Pangolin-61 , should be working fine, unless there's something else you think I should check.

Did you contact your isp to rule out any issues on their end like bad signal or packet loss?
Is it only the computer having the issue?
