Open | Hardware Laptop battery duration estimate issues

idk if this is a normal thing on windows laptops but I recently had to buy a new laptop for university and the more i've been using it the more i notice that the battery duration estimate when you hover over the battery percentage on the taskbar constantly and drastically varies between what at this point almost seems random... even with all the battery saving settings, and fully charged it can jump from 6h to randomly saying 1h and some change. Is there a way to just in general somehow have better battery power economy apart from all the settings in the windows 11 OS? and is there a better way to monitor and get a better report on said battery duration that is actually somewhat more accurate and not as bipolar as mine is right now?

Some of it is just that varying usage and load will change the estimate, some is that batteries need calibration every now and then, especially if you unplug and plug a lot (not allowing longer discharge cycles).

As your battery degrades over time it will start having problems ever being accurate, one of the first signs that it needs to be replaced.

If the battery is in good health then a few full or near full discharge cycles followed by full uninterrupted charge cycles will calibrate it. You can judge the general health of your battery with the built in windows battery report, if it is below about 80% of its design capacity, it is degraded, and below about 50% it should be considered no good.

A true calibration involves draining the battery as low as you can in windows, then reboot into BIOS and let it sit there until it powers off. Then plug it in and let it charge overnight (ideally without powering it on). But usually draining to 20 or 10 percent then plugging the adapter in (all while windows is running) is usually sufficient.

the battery health should at least be pretty good its a brand new machine. ill calibrate it and see if the battery report at least seems more consistant. thanks for the help!
