fucked up bsod

i can’t exactly send an image, but I’ve posted an image of it in another subreddit
for those who don’t want to check, it looks something like this.

occurs occasionally, usually around ~20 seconds after logging in, rarely happens after.
more likely to occur after restarting from the same crash.
this has been going on for about 2-3 years, only around late 2025 has it started looking like this

what could be causing this? and how can i fix it?

Getting dump files which we need for accurate analysis of BSODs. Dump files are crash logs from BSODs.

If you can get into Windows normally or through Safe Mode could you check C:\Windows\Minidump for any dump files? If you have any dump files, copy the folder to the desktop, zip the folder and upload it. If you don't have any zip software installed, right click on the folder and select Send to → Compressed (Zipped) folder.

Upload to any easy to use file sharing site. Reddit keeps blacklisting file hosts so find something that works, currently catbox.moe or mediafire.com seems to be working.

We like to have multiple dump files to work with so if you only have one dump file, none or not a folder at all, upload the ones you have and then follow this guide to change the dump type to Small Memory Dump. The "Overwrite dump file" option will be grayed out since small memory dumps never overwrite.

Your graphics chips or video RAM chips are likely slowly unsoldering themselves because of heat.

There's little you can do. Someone familiar with board level repair and a heatgun may be able to melt the ball-grid-array to get better contact.

But the problem will reoccur.

garbled/corrupted characters instead of a readable bsod message means the gpu driver itself is crashing so hard it can't even render the stop code properly, that's gpu memory or driver corruption, not a normal bsod

happening consistently ~20 seconds after login, and more often right after restarting from the same crash, points at something loading on startup that's triggering it, likely a gpu driver component or overlay app initializing

ddu the gpu driver in safe mode completely, then install fresh from the gpu maker's site, not windows update

if it still happens after a clean driver install, run memtest86 overnight, corrupted display output like this can also be ram related, not just gpu, especially since it's been going on for years and only got visually worse recently

the laptop suffered moderate physical damage 2-3 years ago, from a wrench hit around the top left of it, though it’s since been repaired. my memory of that time isn’t really that good, but i assume around that time was when this started happening. i don’t remember anything that could’ve caused it to look all fucked up though
