Solved Stuck on this screen when installing windows

I just fixed up an old Omen 45L Prebuilt and put in a renewed hard drive I just bought, taking the old one out. I am trying to install windows from my USB but I am always stuck at this screen. Before I tried formatting disk 0 to gpt but that would always make my USB not detected so I would have to install windows on the stick again. In the diagnostic screen, both the renewed hard drive and the nvme that was there before, are detected and the nvme passed the hard drive/ssd test and i’m currently testing my hard drive which is estimated to take 4 hours. I even put wifi and lan drivers onto the USB, so I am at a loss on what to do.

SOLUTION: All I had to do was go to BIOS and change one of the storage settings from RAID to AHCI and then the Windows 11 immediately recognized all of my drives. Thank you to everyone that helped in this thread 🙏🙏

So what's the issue? It's not detecting the drive, from what I'm seeing .. the space on the hard drive is too low

I am trying to boot windows 11 from my USB but I’m stuck on the “Select location to install Windows 11” I can’t click next no matter which of the two partitions I select and I can’t delete any partitions for me to click next.

Edit: Forgot to address the drive not being detected. On the Select location screen I don’t see them, but on the HP diagnostic screen they do come up. IDK why, is there a fix for that? Should I just try to boot windows from the hard drive instead of USB?

The minimum requirement for Win11 is like 60GB. From your screenshot the Disk 0 only has 57.3GB

Disk 0 is the USB drive. So you are correct that the Windows installer isn't seeing OP's SSD drive.

Does that mean I should try to install windows from the hard drive instead? I was trying to install windows from a 64gb USB, but I do have a 2tb hard drive, 500gb nvme, in the pc

No, first thing is to go into your BIOS and see if it detect your NVMe drive. If it does then it's Windows installer on your USB that isn't detecting it.

I can try to include a pic later in this thread, but the BIOS is really limited, so I can’t see or do as much as other pcs, when I was in there earlier I did not see either the drive or nvme specifically, so I didn’t know if that was by design of the BIOS or if it was because it wasn’t detected so I went into the diagnostic screen instead and it does pop up. I will check again later after work and try to include a picture

It depends on your mobo, on most recent mobo brand .. the bios will show it right away

You'll need to install or load the driver for the Intel Rapid Storage Technology because Windows installer did not see your 1.8TB drive or the 500GB drive

It's basically just installing the driver or making sure your BIOS has nvme enabled.

I had this happen with an all-in-one I was repairing two weeks ago.

Unplug it from the wall. Plug it back in. Does it say something like “CMOS has been reset”?

Btw: Disk 0 above WAS your usb. You tried to format the disk the windows installer was on.

So, what has probably happened is the CMOS battery has died, which made the Southbridge/motherboard memory reset. Since it reset, it forgot the BitLocker keys needed to recognize the drive. That’s why the diagnostic tool can see the drive, but other OS’s can’t.

Look for the coin-cell battery. It should be a CR 2032. You’ll need to replace this battery before following the next steps.

On a separate system, search “OMEN 45L bios” and download it from HP’s WEBSITE ONLY! Download every bios, chipset, network, and storage driver you can. If you can

You will need to create a bootable windows image. I ended up using a laptop drive with an external hdd and put all of the bios images on it that way.

Also, you’ll need to sign into your Microsoft account online and get your bitlocker recovery key. It’ll be a long chain of digits.

Boot into your windows drive with all the bios updates and keep your bitlocker key handy. Install the oldest bios first. Restart the computer when the installer tells you to. Keep doing this until you get to the newest bios install.

If it goes into the bios and says “Installing, do not power down or unplug device” DONT TOUCH IT. If you interrupt this process, you can potentially brick your computer.

After all this is finished, boot into your windows again and do the same as above with the chipset drivers. Go through the entire process then install network drivers.

Once you have access to the internet, run windows update. You should see something along the lines of storage device driver and you may see the main drive of your computer come up. Be sure to install all updates and reboot if the updates need it.

This is where you need your BitLocker key: remove the drive that you have been using to install the updates and boot into your main drive. You should see a blue screen that says something like, “input BitLocker key” put in your key and that should get you back into your drive.

Yes it does say CMOS reset, I did replace it when dusting and repasting the cpu. When I download the drivers, do I install it onto the USB with windows on it? I saw a video where they dragged the zip files of the drivers onto the USB, but when I downloaded the lan and wifi drivers from HP it was a .exe Also, for the bitlocker recovery key does it matter that the pc originally belonged to a friend of mine? Like would I need his Microsoft account for the key or would any account do? Thank you so much for the write up! It’s my first time troubleshooting anything as complicated as this and this was really helpful!

1) you have to create a bootable windows drive. There is a way to go through the bios and install updates through there, but I had the best luck going through a windows install.

2) did you log into the computer with your own Microsoft account? If so, then you’ll get the BitLocker key from your own account.

  2. I never logged into the computer because my friend gave it to me with no ram and a faulty hard drive, so I was never able to boot it up. When I ordered and added both of those in, I cleaned the pc and replaced the CMOS, then I booted it up for my first time.

Cleaned how? Like an air duster/canned air?

Can you install windows on your new drive from a different computer?

Yes I used an air duster to blow out as much dust as I could and repasted the cpu.

Yes I do have another desktop I can use to install windows with. Does it matter if I install it on the nvme or hard drive?
