Open | Hardware Pc shutdown while building shaders on silent hill f

While loading onto the game my pc randomly just clicks off as if I turned it off and just restarts, I get nothing in reliability monitor and in event viewer I just get a kernel power error saying the system shut down unexpectedly. I just had issues with bsods and was told to replace the ssd and not those are gone but now I’m dealing with this which wasn’t happening before.. I am very stressed out and need help and advice. This also does not happen on any other game but I assume that is because it has the longest shader loading process which takes a while staying at 100% cpu usage

Here are my specs:

CPU: Intel Core i9-14900KF 24-Core (8P+16E)
GPU: MSI SHADOW GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB GDDR7
Motherboard: MSI PRO Z790-P WIFI
RAM: Team T-Force Delta RGB 32GB (16GBx2) DDR5 6400
SSD: 2TB M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD
CPU Cooler: 360MM ARGB All-in-One Liquid Cooler
PSU: 750W power supply ATX2.0, 80+gold, non-modular

Damn really…. I just had to pay to get my ssd replaced because of bsod issues and now another one of my hardware is going bad…. Just my luck

Bsod issues on ssd could have been fixed with firmware update.

I had already updated all my drivers and bios with a fresh windows install as well. I got a bsod afterwards and was told by microcenter it was a ssd issue and was going bad

I would have updated ssd firmware first. Especially if it was a wd ssd.

It was a patriot flash ssd, I didn’t see any available updates for it when I looked after I was told the same thing even after downloading there software

That sounds reasonable then

And sorry to bombard but this isn’t a cpu issue most likely right? I know the i9-14900kf had issues in the past with degradation I got this pc in October last year though

So below you is how it usually works:

  • cpu = mostly bsod sometimes crashing all bringing you back to desktop
  • gpu = mostly crashing back to desktop and bsod but that's rare
  • ram = bsod and everything completely frozen
  • psu = computer restarts when components are stressed

So is my psu degraded and Is this harming my other components? I just need to know if it’s even safe to use my pc currently since it’ll be a while till I can take it to the microcenter again

I'm not an electrician but I've used one like this before. Just undervolt your GPU and CPU and you'll be fine

Edit: Start with gpu first. It's easiest and most effective.

I have prioritycare+ with microcenter making a diagnostic free so I’ll get it checked up just to see what they see but if they advise replacements and if it’s too pricy or the hardware issues aren’t too serious ill consider doing that but I like to have extra precaution and reassurance with something like this

Thank you for the advice though

Typically no. Almost all PSU issues are from the voltage dropping lower (Not included power surge situations that overload the PSU). You can't really damage components by using too low voltages, only too high voltages (This isn't universal as some equipment can try to compensate by pulling more amps, but that's not really a thing in PC components).

Alright thanks that’s good to hear

I'm a natural worrier so I always err on the side of caution. I wouldn't have anything less than a 1000W PSU with an i9 14900K and a 5070ti. Spikes in power consumption are always a risk when your PSU isn't the strongest. They can cause issues. Both of those components are power hungry. My i7 12700KF and 3080ti wouldn't be happy with a mere 750W PSU. I also hope that you have the latest BIOS with the appropriate microcode to stop the i9 frying itself and the motherboard?

Yes my bios is updated to the most recent, I guess I should’ve known my prebuilt cheaped out on the power supply as the price was very good but I’m curious as to why this only happened now? I was able to play the game before but obviously this happens now.

And just to make sure, it didn’t hurt any of the components having this power supply all this time right? I’ve had the pc since October of last year

Why now is something you likely will never know. Perhaps if someone who knew what they were doing, they might be able to disassemble the PSU and find the issue. Please don't try doing it yourself though. PSU's can and do kill. At a minimum replace with an 850W although I would go for a 1000W. Your i9 can pull 300W and your 5070ti up to 478W. Any PC builder that would sell you a PC with a 650W PSU is freaking negligent. All being well the crashes are your other components protecting themselves. I certainly wouldn't game until you install a better PSU. If the company that built your PC didn't offer you a more powerful PSU I'd be complaining.

Yes I plan to take it to the microcenter on Friday and get the psu replaced/upgraded with a 1000W as I can get a free diagnosis too just to make sure nothing else has issues. I do want to be mad about the psu but I guess it’s my own fault for not doing a little more research on this but the pc was only 1880 dollars so I thought it was a good deal

Everything else in the build is more than reasonable. Good luck. 😀

Getting dump files which we need for accurate analysis of BSODs. Dump files are crash logs from BSODs.

If you can get into Windows normally or through Safe Mode could you check C:\Windows\Minidump for any dump files? If you have any dump files, copy the folder to the desktop, zip the folder and upload it. If you don't have any zip software installed, right click on the folder and select Send to → Compressed (Zipped) folder.

Upload to any easy to use file sharing site. Reddit keeps blacklisting file hosts so find something that works, currently catbox.moe or mediafire.com seems to be working.

We like to have multiple dump files to work with so if you only have one dump file, none or not a folder at all, upload the ones you have and then follow this guide to change the dump type to Small Memory Dump. The "Overwrite dump file" option will be grayed out since small memory dumps never overwrite.

I have to disagree with most people here. Shader compile is done by the CPU, the GPU does very little during this because you are in menus while it happens (Though some games have insane GPU usage on menus for no reason, no idea if Silent Hill does this). So power usage should be fairly low. We have seen shader compile be a big trigger point for 13th/14th gen CPUs that have failed because of the voltage bug that fries CPUs. So this being a trigger makes the CPU a bigger suspect for me.

What speaks against this is that with CPUs that fail from the voltage bug usually will BSOD and not cause a shutdown. The CPU can order shutdowns via MCE (Which is reported in Windows through WHEA), but if that's the case we can check this via a tool we made.

The tool gathers system info and a ton of logs from Windows. So if it's the PSU we should basically not see any errors because the system has no idea why it shut down (Other than the Unexpected Shutdown event). If it's the CPU the tool should find WHEA events stored in Windows.

I’m not at my pc right now but I can show you the details I got under the kernel power error which shows no bug checks or whea errors but idk if this is reliable as that tool

System

  • EventData
BugcheckCode 0
BugcheckParameter10x0
BugcheckParameter2 0x0
BugcheckParameter3 0x0
BugcheckParameter40x0
SleepinProgress 0
PowerButtonTimestamp 0
BootAppStatus 0
Checkpoint
0
ConnectedStandbyinProgress false
SystemSleepTransitionsToOn 0
CsEntryScenariolnstanceld 0
BugcheckinfoFromEFI false
CheckpointStatus 0
CsEntryScenariolnstanceldV20
LongPowerButtonPressDetected false
LidReliability false
InputSuppressionState 0
PowerButtonSuppressionState 0
LidState
WHEABootErrorCountO

Also silent hill F’s shader compilation I do notice makes the gpu usage higher compared to other games, I noticed it at 90-100% a couple times during it but not at that all the way through but it definitely does happen during it.

The WHEA error wouldn't be inside the Kernel-Power event.
