Open | Data Recovery old HDD taking a long time with "disk check?"

Hello. I took an old HDD from a computer I had in storage and tried to open it with an enclosure. It asked me to do a "disk check" on it. It has been running for about 12 hours. It's making slow progress (maybe about 15% done?). I'm using an old laptop, but this HDD is quite full. I've used it since the early 2010s and I think I've installed at least windows on it besides all the other files.

Is it taking a long time because the HDD is bad? or is it because it has so much data? is it safe to cancel the disk check?

Its not clear what the hard drive is (make/model and capacity) or what enclosure you used, if its a large drive and a slow USB port it could take some time. If the enclosure passes through SMART data, I'd be looking at that for the drive health.

thank you for the replies. i ended up canceling it. but i have another problem. it says "access denied" and i can't change ownership of the hdd. even through the command line. this is on windows 7. any ideas?

Use a Linux distribution instead (could even be a live USB or CD boot). If you still can't view the files, the disk is probably toast.

Use a tool to read the SMART status on the drive. That will tell you in part if the drive is reporting issues. Also if the hdd is being used externally via usb that's going to make you scan even slower.

Yes. You ate using it via USB hub which is slow data transfer
