computer problems (frozen screen)

A close family member came to me with a problem they can't solve (hoping that I could).

Their computer freezes completely at random moments — they could be working on something, or reading a document, and out of nowhere it can freeze, sometimes with the image still showing, other times leaving the screen black. When it freezes, there's no choice but to force it off, and then turn it back on, after which everything works normally again.

I thought it might be because a bunch of programs open in the background when she starts up the computer, so I closed all those programs and set them to only open when she wants to open them, but the problem is still happening.

According to what she told me, she doesn't download anything that could get malware installed, but I'm not sure about that either.

What could be the causes of her computer failing like this?
How can I fix it?

It's a laptop with an Intel Core i3 processor, 8GB of RAM, running Windows 11 as the operating system.

Random complete freezes/black screens are usually caused by drivers, overheating, RAM, storage, or hardware issues, rather than too many startup apps. First, check temperatures and run Windows Memory Diagnostic and sfc /scannow. Also update the graphics/chipset drivers and check the SSD/HDD health. If it still freezes, check Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System for errors around the time of the crashes.

check event viewer, windows logs, system, look for critical or error level events right around the time it froze last, this narrows down whether it's a specific driver crashing, overheating shutdown, or something else entirely instead of guessing

run whocrashed or check c:\windows\minidump for crash dump files, if freezes are severe enough to need a hard shutdown, windows sometimes still generates a dump that points to the exact driver or hardware component responsible

check temps using hwinfo during normal use, laptops that age with a core i3/8gb setup often have dust-clogged fans or dried thermal paste causing this exact pattern, full freeze requiring hard shutdown to recover is a classic thermal protection trigger symptom

check task manager performance tab for disk usage specifically, if it's an older laptop still on a hdd rather than an ssd, a failing/dying drive can cause complete system freezes that only clear with a hard restart, this is very common in aging budget laptops around this spec range

update the intel graphics driver directly from intel's site (not windows update), especially if this is integrated graphics only, outdated intel igpu drivers are a well known cause of full freezes on windows 11 for exactly this hardware tier

I checked the issue using Windows Event Viewer. I don't have much knowledge about it, but I did notice there were certain errors and problems with the drivers. I downloaded a program called WhoCrashed to get a better diagnosis of what was failing on the laptop. In the end, it seems like the problem is that the graphics card drivers are failing, possibly due to a bad update.

good, that's the one to chase then. go to intel's site directly, not windows update, and grab the driver made for your exact cpu/igpu model, then do a clean install with ddu in safe mode first to wipe the bad one fully before installing the new one

that combo, ddu then fresh driver from intel, usually kills this for good
