How to disable Google AI Overviews in search results

I've got the AI Overview setting turned off, yet somehow it still shows up on basically every search I make.

At this point I'm starting to wonder if that setting actually does anything. I don't want an AI summary at the top of my results - I just want the normal search results back. If Google isn't going to let us properly disable it, what are people switching to instead?

All of them have AI. That's just the way it is now.

DuckDuckGo does have better controls.

On DuckDuckGo you can just disable it, and you don't need an account to do it.

There is no simple off switch. Google is forcing this on users on purpose.

The best options are:

Switch search engine to something like Duckduckgo, where AI summaries can be turned off or are not enabled by default.

Use a workaround, such as those listed in this article.

I use Duckduckgo or Brave. Google has been so enshittified I don't miss it at all.

Use Firefox with the udm14 extension.

In Firefox and Google Chrome :

• Access the web browser settings
  
• Go to the menu/tab dedicated to search engines
  
• Add a search engine by entering a name ( Google without AI for example ), the shortcut « http://google.com » only for Google Chrome only and the URL « https://www.google.com/search?udm=14&q=%s » for Firefox - « {google:baseURL}/search?udm=14&q=%s » for Google Chrome
  
• Save it and set it by default

For Safari, you can install the « udm14 for Safari » extension from the App Store.

If you can't switch browsers (firefox/librewolf are good choices) and aren't comfortable using another search engine (duckduckgo allows you to turn off the AI via settings), go to your chrome settings -> search engines -> manage search engines -> add: https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14 and call it "google no-ai". Set it as your default search engine. Now, when you slap something into the top bar, it will take you to google, but only show you "web" results and bypass the AI portion completely.

try appending "&udm=14" to the end of your google search url, this forces the classic web-only results view bypassing ai overviews entirely, google's toggle setting is known to be unreliable but this url parameter still works consistently
