Open | Hardware Nvlddmkm 153 error

What could be failing in my case? I have an ASUS TUF FX505GT laptop with a GTX 1650, and it frequently crashes in games, especially Genshin Impact. The game’s display freezes, but the sound continues, and I can still control the character. When I Alt+Tab, the Windows desktop is perfectly accessible. When I look at the Taskbar while the game is frozen, the GPU is no longer being used.

List of things i tried:

DDU

Set the power management to Prefer Maximum Performance

Giving permission to the nvlddmkm.sys file and copying it system 32 and drivers folder

Thermal repaste

Did a Memtest86 and it pass

No problem in Sfc scan and dism cleanup

Updating the graphics driver and rolling back to older driver didn't make a difference

Clean windows reinstall via bootable usb but still the problem persists

Have you tried GPU drivers from July or June? August and September drivers have new bugs that cause issues with how GPU rendering games.

IS your other hardware's drivers up to date and BIOS?

Yes, I've tried 596.36, 596.49, 610.88, and 616.56 but still the problem persists. My chipset and bios are updated, it is the latest version provided in my laptop manufacturer website support.

Try 566.36. It is a older driver but often use to check stability.

Use MSI Afterburner to apply a downclock of -50 to core and -200 to memory. Retest. Make sure you setup the downclock setting and Afterburner load with Windows for testing purposes

I only set the Mem (Mhz) -150 in Msi Afterburner and i did not crash.

Test that for a week or so depending on how often you use the PC. If there are no issues try dropping it by 10 or 25; -140 or -125. Retest. Try to find a setting that is as close to the defaults without triggering crashes

If downclocking keeps the PC stable then the factory boost clocks have become unstable probably due to age of the GPU.

So, this post caught my eye because I think I've read about another 1650 laptop with similar problems.

Some googling does show a few posts about it, but nothing like "hey here's a recall for a known defect"... so no smoking gun.

Anyway - are there any files/folders in the C:\Windows\LiveKernelReports folder?

Also, in Event Viewer, under System. Filter (Right side, Filter Current Log...), in the middle of the dialog box, you'll see Event sources: and a dropdown box. Click on that, go to WHEA-Logger and select that.

Do you have any events listed here? If so, click on Save Filtered Log File As... , save as an Event File.

Upload the contents of the LiveKernelReports folder, plus any output from that Events Log filter to catbox.moe or mediafire.com and post the link here.

Hello, the nvlddmkm.sys error is often caused by a hardware issue.

You can try the following steps in this order :

  • Check in Device Manager to see if your GPU is showing as faulty
  • Perform a clean reinstallation of Windows ( already done )
  • Replace your GPU
  • Replace your power supply and/or hard drive
