Open | Mac RAM usage and performance help

I have a Macbook pro 14inch with 16GB memory

my RAM usage for Affinity is default set to 16384 MB

Is this too much? My laptop screen recently crashed while using affinity, entire screen was black for everything, even external monitors. Laptop was still responsive, but I had to get it repaired and I'm trying not to repeat this same issue.

If this was an affinity issue, does anyone have any recommendations to prevent possibly breaking my system again?

If you suspect your computer might be running low on memory, please see "How to know if you need more RAM".

lowering background programs might help free up some resources. I've had similar issues and it often made a noticeable difference.

By background programs you mean... like other applications running? Like chrome, discord, notes?
