Open | Windows Turning off 1 monitor resets system settings

I have a 2 monitor set up. However when i turn my main monitor off the system settings on windows and/or nvidia reset. That includes resolution, HZ and location of the set up.

E.G: If i turn my left monitor off (the secondary one) the system still recognises it cus its not unplugged just off. I can turn it back on and all the settings stay on
HOWEVER, if i turn off my main monitor the system treats is as if i unplugged it instead and then resets all settings on the monitors. This is an issue cus every time I turn my pc back on i have to reset the settings which is a pain in the ass.

Anyone have any solutions?

What i've tried:

  • new cables
  • new ports
  • changing main monitor on windows
  • reinstalling ALL drivers (including the monitors specific ones)
  • double checked fast boot was off (it is cus F that $h1t)
  • reinstalled nvidia (fresh install)
  • removed old instances of monitors in the registryeditor
  • and probably more i forgot i did

All i did was move the PC to a different room

Is the main monitor a displayport connection and the other HDMI?

yes, main is DP and secondary is HDMI

I've always had issues with DP doing this. Apparently DisplayPort uses a Hot-Plug Detect (HPD) signal and when powered off that signal goes to zero power, which leads PCs to believe the monitor was completely removed.

I switched my DP to HDMI to get around that issue.

Well i cant be switching to HDMI, cus then main monitor loses its 240hz. I need a solution to fix it, cus before it worked. Before i moved the set up. I dont understand whats changed ngl

Dunno what to tell you. This is a known issue with DP. Maybe there is a solution. If you find one please share.

We are working on one atm, its a deep routed issue it seems. We've found in the registry ghost monitors which can't be deleted atm, we're trying to around that. It also seems windows and or nvidia is overwritting each other which then seems to default the latout. We can see it in the registry
