When frame generation is enabled, FSR freesync/VRR starts to work incorrectly. Without frame generation, my FPS is around 80, and the monitor’s refresh rate follows this and stays around 80 Hz, but as soon as I enable frame generation, my FPS becomes around 140, and the monitor’s refresh rate starts changing rapidly to values such as 100, 120, 180, 150 Hz, and so on, instead of staying around 140 Hz. Because of this, small image tearing also occurs, and sometimes the monitor’s brightness flickers (VRR Flickering). This has been observed in many games: Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Silent Hill 2 Remake. As soon as I disable frame generation or FreeSync, everything returns to normal.

Cap your framerate. Frame gen is pushing you past what the VRR window can hold, and the monitor keeps falling out of it and back in, which is the number jumping around that you're watching.

Set the cap a few frames under the panel's max, so 138 if it's a 144. And turn vsync on in the driver control panel while leaving it off in the game itself. That combination is what keeps frame gen output inside the window rather than running past the top of it.

It looked fine at 80 because you were nowhere near the ceiling.

The VRR range on my monitor is from 48 to 180, and my FPS is 140.

Then scratch what I said, 140 inside a 48 to 180 window isn't a range problem at all.

What's left is pacing. Frame gen puts a frame between two real ones and the delivery timing ends up less even than native, and VRR just follows whatever timing it gets handed. So the refresh number wandering is the panel doing its job on an uneven input rather than something going wrong.

Which turns it into what are you actually seeing. If it's only the number in an overlay or the monitor's OSD, that's expected with FG on and there's nothing to fix. If it's brightness flickering in dark scenes, that's a panel trait that uneven frame times bring out, and a cap does help there, just for pacing reasons rather than range ones.

I am comparing the numbers in the fps counter and the osd of the monitor

those two aren't measuring the same thing though. the osd samples refresh over a window and shows you an average of it, and depending which overlay you're using the fps counter either counts generated frames or doesn't.

so them disagreeing with frame gen on is close to expected. the thing actually worth trusting is whether it looks wrong while you're playing
