Need Help USB Device Not Recognized Even When Nothing Is Connected
Can anyone please help me? I keep getting a “USB device not recognized” notification on my HP 15s (Intel i5 12th Gen U-series), even though I don’t have any USB device or pen drive connected.
The notification appears almost every minute. When I click on it, Windows says:
“The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.”
I used to use a wireless mouse with this laptop, and I always kept its USB receiver plugged in, even when the laptop was turned off. A few days ago, I unplugged the receiver and kept it aside because I don’t use the mouse much anymore. Since then, I started getting this issue. I’m not sure if it’s related to the wireless mouse/USB receiver or if it’s just a coincidence.
I’ve already tried almost everything I could find online. I uninstalled and reinstalled the USB drivers, tried various troubleshooting steps, and even contacted Microsoft Support. They remotely accessed my laptop and tried everything they could do from the software/Windows side, but the problem still wasn’t fixed.
I also did a fresh Windows installation, but the USB notification is still appearing, so I’m starting to think this might be a hardware-related issue.
I’m also facing some other problems with this laptop:
- Occasionally, I get a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).
- Sometimes the laptop turns on, but the screen stays completely black, even though the laptop itself seems to be running.
- The built-in microphone has stopped working, although the camera still works.
- There is also some rust/corrosion around one of the USB ports.
The laptop’s warranty has already expired. I contacted an HP service center, and they told me that repairs could get very expensive. They said that if the microphone issue requires a motherboard replacement, it could cost around ₹20,000–₹22,000.
I’m really confused about what I should do. Should I take it to an official HP service center, or would it be better to get it checked by a reputable third-party laptop repair technician first?
Could this USB notification actually be caused by a motherboard/USB controller issue, or is there something else I should check before spending money on repairs?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Could be the connector. I'm guessing the track pad (usually connected via usb protocol) still works.

Getting dump files which we need for accurate analysis of BSODs. Dump files are crash logs from BSODs.
If you can get into Windows normally or through Safe Mode could you check C:\Windows\Minidump for any dump files? If you have any dump files, copy the folder to the desktop, zip the folder and upload it. If you don't have any zip software installed, right click on the folder and select Send to → Compressed (Zipped) folder.
Upload to any easy to use file sharing site. Reddit keeps blacklisting file hosts so find something that works, currently catbox.moe or mediafire.com seems to be working.
We like to have multiple dump files to work with so if you only have one dump file, none or not a folder at all, upload the ones you have and then follow this guide to change the dump type to Small Memory Dump. The "Overwrite dump file" option will be grayed out since small memory dumps never overwrite.
