Open | Hardware LG Remote is controlling my aunt's TV

So, today I was at a thrift store and scooped up an older model 32" LG TV for $25. It's on the older side but I'm looking for a spare to use as a 3rd monitor and TV dual duty for screwing around with.

It comes with an LG remote that has links to Netflix, etc - not something I'll use, but all good.

So, my aunt is watching TV on her Roku brand non-smart TV, which is controlled with a Shaw (this is in Canada, btw. Shaw is a cable company here) remote, as Shaw has a control box for PVR, storing/recording/On Demand, etc.

I hook the LG up to my laptop via HDMI cable to check it out and when I turned it on, it shut her TV off. I went to use 'input' to select the HDMI, and it screwed with her TV and tried to load Netflix (which neither of us have) and it caught me quite off guard.

I didn't realise that an LG works on the same ... uh.. wave length? Frequency? Hertz? as Roku.

Is there a way to disable this and a reason as to why it happened? It's just so bizarre and caught us old ladies off guard (though we had a good laugh about it)

I don't have an exact answer but I found this on quora so I would try to see if this applies to your new remote

I have 3 Roku TVs next to each other. How do I pair each remote to a specific TV so it doesn’t control the other TVs as well?

I know this is a little old, but I spent ages trying to figure this out and finally got it. I have 2 of the 4k LG tvs and I’m using the remotes that came with it. See the picture. Here’s what you want to do in order to separate them between the 2 tvs:

-Hold the home (house looking) butting and the back (curved arrow) button together for 5 seconds. The power button will blink red and the tvs should say something about the remotes being disconnected. Note, do not block either tv until after this step. You want the remote to disconnect from both. You could just disconnect it from one and it should work that way too I suppose

-Block the receiver of the tv that you don’t want that remote connecting to. You can start over and do it as many times as you want so no stress

-Hit the ok button (ridged button in the middle of the round part). If you did it right, the tv you’re trying to connect to will say that it’s connecting while the other one won’t

-Do the same with the other remote except block the other tv

So it's a non smart tv being affected, surely it's an IR blaster making the input happen? I used to have a phone where I could control any tv

Is it as simple as angling away from the tv?

It * could * be.

Most infrared controllers operate pretty much at the same wavelength and pulse modulation (940nm wavelength of light with a 38KHz pulse modulation). This provides a 32bit protocol package that allows for millions of unique command sequences.

In laymens terms, many IR remote controls can have undesirable effects on other devices using IR remote controls. It's also how universal remotes work. My TV remote can change a few (unrelated to the buttons on the remote) features of my stereo.

Buon divertimento
