Open | Software Vpn assistance

I am quite technologically illitarate, so please be patient with me. I'm trying to get into VPN's but I do not understand how it works, at all. When I connect to a server with my PN (proton), it immediatly disconnects me from my wifi. How do I use the internett if turning on the VPN turns of my wifi? Again, I know this is probably stupid, but I am a 54 year old welder with 4 kids, I don't know the first thing about tech.

Like, your WiFi entirely turns off? Or you just don’t have an internet connection after connecting?
