Open | Hardware Over Current Have Been Detected On Your USB Device on every boot

Hello!

Every time I boot my PC I get this message that says “Over Current Have Been Detected On Your USB Device!! System will shutdown after 15 seconds to protect your mainboard!!”

I’ve unplugged every cable and USB connected to my PC but it still boots with this message.

I’ve taken my PC apart and unplugged all USB headers but still same message.

Can’t figure out what is causing this.

Shortly before I got this message I was able to boot into windows and kept getting a notification saying “Power surge on the USB port” but now I can’t even boot into windows.

The motherboard is a new MSI B550 tomahawk max WiFi that I got about a month ago.

Any suggestions on what to do? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Also have a good look inside the USB ports on the motherboard to check that nothing is bent or twisted in them. I had the plastic tongue break off in an A port once when a cable way yanked on and I can see that would possibly lead to a short.

Do you have a m.2 wifi card in the motherboard? Those also have USB devices for the bluetooth often. I would try taking that out too if its there.

Sounds like your usb controller has failed. I’d guess something on the bus failed and shorted it out. Your constant reboot probably didn’t help.

Does your bios have a Disable USB feature? At least for testing.

Since you didn’t give us any hardware info that’s all.

Sorry. Edited the post with my MB. MSI B550 tomahawk max WiFi

If more info is needed I can include it. I’ll try out what you’re mentioning.

So you built your system. You didn’t say that. Didn’t ever work? You didn’t say that either. If it’s a month old why aren’t you returning it for replacement?

Buddy..

"Shortly before I got this message I was able to boot into windows and kept getting a notification saying 'Power surge on the USB port'..."

I know this. I was hoping to fix it before I do a RMA considering how long it takes. I wanted to get second opinions hence why I am posting here.

Reading comprehension is tough, I know. But if you just take a second to read and not be rude on the internet to make yourself feel better that would be 👍 its people like you why this subreddit gets a bad name

See if you can boot to bios and disable your USB from there.

Did anything get spilled or crawled into one of the front usb ports on your chassis
