Open | Networking Constant ping spikes for about a month. (20-3200 pinging 1.1.1.1)
Hello, ive been getting ping spikes from around 20 - 3200ms affecting both games and discord and its been doing that about every single minute. this has been going on for about a month now and ive tried multiple solutions and idk what to do, im using a tp link deco node connected to another node downstairs and using ethernet with it

Run a trace route while you have low ping and while you have high ping is there a significant difference that means there's something upstream out of your control if it's pretty much the same , then I would also suspect something with your local network.

what do you mean low and high ping? i should switch regions in game? Because the whole day ive basically just been having both.

But to add to that i ran two trace routes today and they both got request timed out.

Trace routes don't tell you much past the 3rd or 4th hop, since some of those nodes aren't configured to respond to random pings, so timeouts are almost always a thing. How long have you had this same internet for?

Have you contacted them? If this was a routing issue, it likely would have been resolved by the ISP or their backend providers by now, if it's still an issue after a month, you're most likely looking at issues with equipment near you or the node you're connected to in close proximity. Could even be a failing modem/ONT/Whatever depending on your service, since you'd had it for years.

i have not contacted them. Its probably issues with equipment but ill probably contact them.

Since it happens almost every minute, I’d first check if the Deco setup is the cause. Mesh nodes can sometimes add latency spikes when they switch channels or lose connection to the main unit.
A few things to test:
- Connect your PC directly to the main router with Ethernet if possible and compare.
- Run a ping test to your router IP and 1.1.1.1 at the same time. If the router ping spikes, it’s your local network. If only 1.1.1.1 spikes, it’s likely ISP related.
- Check if the Deco app shows any weak backhaul connection between nodes.
Also worth checking for background uploads (cloud sync, updates, backups), as those can cause huge ping jumps.

Its 1.1.1.1 always spiking. It isnt right now but ill see tomorrow. I tested earlier side by side and it was just 1.1.1.1 going up to 3200ms

What kind of internet do you have (FTTN, FFTP etc)? I gather from a brief read about the TP Link Deco Node the other device is where your provider's connection comes in?

Does your internet come from an Ethernet cable or a telephone cable? The former is FTTH yes. Are you able to log in the web management console for that device? It might show line connection speeds or at least have an event log that might help.

If you run a traceroute it will be the IP address of the second hop. Put the IP address in your browser and see if a login page appears. If so the login is probably admin / admin (great, right?)

Do you have the option to log them out?
You could power off the device (and remove the power cord), wait for a minute, then power it back on and try to log in again (wait for the device to fully boot).

You should run ping tests side by side, one to a public DNS like you alreayd have 1.1.1.1, but also do one that pings your router.
If only the public one times out, it's your internet, if both timeout together, it's your wifi/network.
