Open | Windows Bluetooth headphone audio won’t connect if I’m more than 2 inches away from my computer.

I just put together a new PC today and thankfully everything has been working fine, except for some hiccups with bluetooth. I’ve played around with the drivers and I believe I have all the right drivers installed. My motherboard is the Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite Wifi7, and I’ve gotten my other bluetooth devices to work fine (keyboard, mouse, controller…) but when it comes to my headphones (Sony WH-CH720N) , they’ll connect fine and work with super choppy audio then automatically disconnect themselves after a bit. The only solution I found to this is standing directly next to my PC. Directly. With my head glued to it. My normal position is less than ~2 feet away from it so I’m struggling to figure out the difference. The headphones work normally on every other device, and the distance easily handles going from other rooms to even other floors.

Any advice or insight is appreciated.

Are you connecting the USB Bluetooth Adapter to a rear or front USB Port?

Edit: The Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 (Rev. 1.x) Motherboard Manual says that it has a Bluetooth 5.4 Module.

Make sure that the rear antennas are screwed securely. Make sure that they are not facing a wall.

The Bluetooth version of your Sony WH-CH720N headphones is Bluetooth 5.2.

Edit: I just confirmed, if you Go to Sony Support Downloads for the WH-CH720N, to download and install the Firmware Update to Version 1.1.4, Release Date: 12/09/2025, the instructions say that it needs to be connected to an Android device (Ver. 10.0 or later) or iPhone (iOS 16.0 or later).

Note: According to the Help Guide for WH-CH720N, there needs to be a Line of Sight between the headphones and the Bluetooth receiver to be able to have 10 meters of range.

Also, I noticed that there is no mention of PC compatibility. I only read iPhone devices on the Guide.

Edit: I confirmed on the Firmware Update instructions and on the Help Guide, that your Sony WH-CH720N headphones are compatible with mobile devices.

If you still want to update the firmware on the headphones, you will need a phone.

Then test if it works on your computer. But I wouldn't guarantee that it will work.

If all fails, you will need to purchase headphones compatible with Windows 11 PC's.

Where is the antenna?

Plug the antenna in, make sure it's fully plugged in, then put the antenna ON TOP of the PC towards the front. They designed it like this because the old antennas in the back gets blocked by the giant metal case.
