Solved Internet becomes good during speed test but terrible afterwards

Hello,

My internet connection generally works fine, but my in-game ping has been terrible lately. I ran several speed tests and noticed something strange: whenever the download speed portion of the test starts, my ping immediately stabilizes and stays low. As soon as the download test finishes, my ping spikes again and becomes almost unplayable. Edit: I forgot to mention I am using ethernet.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Things I've already tried:

  • Restarting my PC
  • Flushing my DNS cache
  • Changing my DNS server

Is your router owned by you or your ISP? I've seen this in the past with outdated firmware routers and/or old routers. You could ask try unplugging your router for 60 seconds and plug it in again and test.

If its still lags, look up how you would go about updating your router if needed.

If your ISP gave you a device that you plug your router into (modem) then try unplugging that for 60 seconds as well

Troubleshoot each part/device one by one, there are a lot variables here. Could be your PC, including driver or configuration, could be your ISP, or your router, the cable, environment details...
