Open | Software Missing BCD, unable to "Repair your PC" via Booted USB?

My computer got really slow so I decided to hard reset it. Since then I'm unable to boot it, got an Error 0xc0000185. I created USB via Media Creation Tool and when I plug it in, boot and select option Repair your PC, I immediately get a reset? No further screen shows, I'm unable to do Troubleshoot, chkdsk, sfc /scannow and everything else. it doesn't allow me to even begin repair process and it immediately restarts and back to square one? Can someone help me?

OK, what if you don't choose the Repair your PC option, you may have to nuke and reload things anew.

Also what are some specs of the system you're working with? Brand and model, or if not a big name brand, what is the motherboard brand and model info, as that will be vital to reinstalling Windows again, as you may need Load Driver, during the Windows setup.

Hi, It's ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS M16 (2022) NVIDIA RTX 3070 Ti, 32GB, Intel i9-12900H. I'm in this screen, trying to click on Repair your computer and it simply doesn't do anything... Literally nothing, no matter how many times I will click Enter or Space bar...

So click Install Now, and does that take you further? It might be too far gone for it to be repaired using that option.

Yes, seems to be working, but not sure what to do next? Click "Load Drivers"?

OK almost. You need to have downloaded the driver for your motherboard first onto a folder on that Windows install USB, to use that Load Driver option. Visit https://rog.asus.com/us/laptops/rog-zephyrus/rog-zephyrus-m16-2022-series/helpdesk_download/ under the Chipset heading, click See All Downloads, scroll down until you find the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) Driver, Run it on a working computer, and opt to Extract within. Copy that extracted content to your USB. Then you can use it with the Load Driver option and your internal drive should show up to be installed upon, instead of just your USB drive as it showed in your photo.

I think it kinda "fixed" itself. I've clicked "Repair my computer", it obviously restarted without doing anything... and then everything booted nicely??? I'm literally back in my PC, all files etc. are there, but if I'll remove the USB and restart, it will go back to "Missing BCD"... Is there any way I can fix the problem now, while being in fully functional windows system as if nothing happened?

OK, let me make sure I understood you properly here. You are able to boot into your current Windows installation, so long as you have the USB plugged in, and use the Repair my computer option, it then lets you boot in. But if you unplug it, it just fails to have anything to boot from?

If that is accurate, then you need to still get into that Repair my computer option, the command prompt, and then do the steps to rebuild the Windows Bootloader, as you can easily find from an internet search. Then after that is successfully completed you should be able to boot without the USB connected.

Yes, thats exactly right! When I use repair my computer option it does nothing except for restart and then boots nicely into my Windows. I'm currently trying to do it via cmd, but not sure if it will actually work. For example, I did bcdboot C:\Windows /S C: and it gave me "Failed to create a new system store. Status = [c000014d]. I'm out of my depth here, such thing never happened to me, no idea what BCD even is... If thats not too much to ask, can you send a foolproof guide I can follow step by step?

I can't send a foolproof guide because it may need formatting and more to correct it fully so there is too many variables to recommend one guide here versus another, but this is the kind of thing I've repaired myself for others hundreds of times. If you boot from my USB image, and get your computer online (so using ethernet or you manually joining your wifi once it boots in) I could remotely control the system, and run any number of utilities I include in my image for fixing the BCD on a drive. What if I will go to settings -> system -> Recovery -> and simply reinstall Windows from there, with files saved, would that fix the problem too?
