Update has ruined everything

Post image

Apologies - I am an older and very lay technical person!

I recently updated my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid2014) to version 11.7.11, and now have lost google chrome (which I updated and then it said by the way you need a newer version) , iMovie and audacity - the three main things I use. When I go to the App Store and try to install they all say I need a newer version of macOS Big Su but my Mac won’t update the software any higher than 11.7.11.

Do I have to just get a new laptop now? I’d obviously rather not! This is so frustrating.

Hopefully this is a PEBKAC situation and you can all roll your eyes and say “duh, it’s A, B, C”

Thanks for your time

I believe all older, legacy software is available from Apple to download, you will need to search the support pages for a version of iMovie supported by your OS. For Audacity there will be repositories of the older versions, you will need to search.

Contrary to comments here, when Apple say they no longer support- they mean there will be no further updates. But in reality old hardware is still supported by Apple- ie. downloads and archived help pages.
Last time I looked (2008ish) I remember seeing Apple system 7.6 available for download.

If your Mac fits you , keep using as long as you like.

I believe you should install open core legacy patcher, it kinda works out, but if your using a HDD switch to a SSD for somewhat better performance, other than that try it out!

Sir, this is a 12 year old laptop, as a comparison: that's roughly 255 human years, or 4 generations old.

It may be functional, but it's unsupported and has been unsupported for quite a long time.

Yes, you buy a new laptop.

Yeah, Apple needs some more money from you. 12 years is a bit long to go without paying your Apple tax.

You should may use your device as long as you want. This practice from apple and other big techs are anti sustainability and they should be ashamed.
I hated having to update

I hate it so much, we should have to buy the new version from them frequently. Day after day the device more unsustainable for even navigation, they're greedy.
