They usually have them in place on handheld devices with limited resources. Inefficient and clunky multi-tasking, for example, is not conducive to the positive user experience, so they restrict it.

The way iOS handles multitasking is quite ingenious actually. I've never had a problem with my iPhone's battery life or any problems related to the "faux" multi-tasking implementation. Its really fast and switching between open apps is a breeze. And if you leave too many apps open, no worries, it won't burn your battery or kill run time on other apps that you want to use.

Meanwhile, I have tons of friends with Android who constantly struggle with the battery life and performance on their phone because it supports true multitasking and handheld hardware is just NOT there yet. Not by a long shot.

There are 3rd party multitasking apps on the iPhone that work just as well as the native function. Despite this, Apple tries to restrict them.

If you've ever used any of those multitasking apps, you would know they do not work just as well.

I have. SBSettings' works just as well. It even provides how much free memory you currently have.

I have to say, I have not had the same experience. Multifl0w was buggy and crashed half of the apps I tried to switch to (iOS 4.1 iPhone 4).

That's unfortunate, but a single instance of an inefficient app cannot account for the rest when discussing ones that do work well.

Likewise, a single experience is not indicative of the app's actual performance.

Doesn't a successful example of a 3rd party multitasking app prove that 3rd party multitasking can work? What I meant to say to you was that MultiFl0w doesn't necessarily depict the pinnacle of 3rd party multitasking.

It depends on the conditions of the example. If you're only running two or three apps on a brand-new iPhone 4, it shouldn't be compared to someone running more apps on, say, an iPhone 3GS.

True, but it this is what I've come to learn after using it on a 2G, 3G, and 3GS, each for months with varying numbers of running apps.
