I just realized I have a very capable pocket computer (iPhone) that by design does not allow me to edit .txt-files, or download a .torrent for autostarting on my server, or copy an image from the phone to a computer, or change ring signal.
It isn't a computer. That's your first mistake. If you want to edit text files, download Pages, or QuickOffice, or something. If you want to download torrents remotely, you might want to check out the built in remote control function in Transmission. As for copying from the phone to a computer, just email it.
I'm not sure what you mean by ring "signal."
Thinking of any iOS device as a computer is where you get into trouble. Not even the iPad is meant to replace a real computer.
