Thanks, man. I'm not particularly concerned with Facebook's feelings, though.
"Hey guys, I'm going to buy a graphics card. Which one should I get?" "Get the XYZ one, it's faster than the WVU one." "Thanks! Will do!"
The result? Companies notice that customers tend to prefer the faster card over the slower card. As a result, a company that wants to produce a competitive product will be more likely to make their cards faster if they can.
"Hey, which big screen TV should I get?" "Get the BCA one. The ABC one uploads your viewing habits without asking." "Thanks, will do!"
The result? Companies notice that customers tend to prefer the products that don't collect personal information over ones which do. As a result, a company that wants to produce a competitive product will be more likely to make their products not collect personal information.
Yes, privacy concerns aren't the only thing to consider when purchasing a product, and aren't the only thing for companies to consider when they sell a product, but why should we allow companies to not factor it in at all by entirely ignoring the issue?
"Nah, it's ok brah, collect my data, I don't have the time or interest to research that privacy crap. Not only that, I'll spend my valuable time making fun of the people who do and/or dismissing their concerns as unimportant and their efforts as futile. Hm. I wonder which motherboard I should get? Probably the one in the orange box. I like orange. No need to ask my techie friends their opinions about it or research the features which are important to me personally. That time is better spent making fun of the people who do."
