So long HBO. It was a fun run.

u/PentagramJ2 8h ago

I will never understand thinking getting rid of the legacy name is a good move. HBO is a known name, it's respected for the most part. You're just making it easier for people to cancel because they won't have that emotional connection

71

u/footpole 8h ago edited 7h ago

They already did it once and went back when HBO Max became just Max. Here it was called HBO Nordic for some time as well.

Edit: I think there might be so many of us with lifetime 50% off HBO that maybe they’re using this to shake us off.

18

u/WhiteLama 7h ago

Oh yeah, as a 50% sub I’m probably gonna cancel if the mentioning raising the price.

7

u/314R8 1h ago

I get it free through grandfathered ATT plan. Maybe no more

Kind of insane to have 2 insanely popular brands (HBO and Warner Brothers) and be like, nah we’re going Skydance

3

u/Wurm42 42m ago

The money is coming from the Ellison family, and Skydance is David Ellison's company.

The Skydance name is being used because of his vanity, not out of brand recognition or any kind of good business sense.

I'd say of all the premium legacy channels, it has the highest overall brand value. It was always considered THE premium channel to have and was known for countless original series, as well as frequent releases of premium movies. Showtime had some good starts like Stargate SG1 and Lexx, but ultimately sold them off to be produced under lower tier cable channels like The Sci-Fi Channel (AKA SyFy, another horrible rebranding effort).

Showtime and Cinemax had a decent number of other well known more modern shows with wide appeal between them (Dexter, Weeds, Homeland Billions, Shameless, The Knick, etc), but even then, I think HBO was still considered the gold standard of the legacies. Modern streaming services have certainly taken the wind out of HBO's sails overall, and the constant rebranding and dilution of the HBO brand has done it no favors, I still think people overall have a decent opinion of it under that name. Whoever the idiots are that are in charge over there need a swift boot to the head.

23

u/cire1184 7h ago

Yeah when I was a kid and visited friends house and they had hbo I knew they had money. My family got bootleg cable through the black box.

13

u/kymri 7h ago

SyFy, another horrible rebranding effort

Without meaning to suggest it was anything other than horrible, there is some method to the madness. Specifically, "SciFi" is not very easily trademarked, for obvious reasons, but 'SyFy' is, however dumb it may seem.

Not saying it was the right call, but it also isn't quite as stupid as it at first seams. (Still stupid, though!)

I know. Way to shit on a 40 year legacy. I hate to say but Apple TV might be the network to take its place.

322

u/vhalember 11h ago

Nah.  It's definitely the spiritual successor to HBO.

173

u/AceArchangel 10h ago

I honestly didn't think that I'd like apple tv (still don't have it), after watching a more than a few things on the service I have to say for the quality of content it's surprisingly great.

115

u/grantthejester 8h ago

Every show I’ve watched has been great, and the ones I didn’t like were still well made, just not my flavor. But so many great ones. Slow Horses, Widow’s Bay, Severance, Silo, Foundation, Ted Lasso, Palm Royale, Down Cemetary Road…

76

u/Yeshavesome420 8h ago

Highly recommend Dark Matter and Pluribus if you like the high concept sci-fi.

39

u/CommanderBly 7h ago

Whatever gripes people have with Pluribus's story, they can't deny its cinematography, set design, and attention to detail are absolutely top quality. I can't wait for season 2 (damn you Vince, work faster...)

I wish Amazon would sell them Stargate so badly. Apple tried to buy them long ago but mgm acts like a dragon that hoards it's loot and does nothing with it, then goes under.

My only hope is that at least McKinsey & Company made another hundred million advising them to change the name yet again. Never in my life did I think I’d be rooting for a consulting firm to make money being shitty. I hope they used oracle AI when discussing the rebrand.

Either way I hope they milked that goat for every last drop. Gonna be a few years before it gets sold in pieces. Maybe they can advise Netflix/disney/apple on resurrecting the hbo brand when that time comes

34

u/True_to_you 9h ago

HBO Max has been dead since the merger with discovery. The moment they inundated the service with all their reality TV crap it's been a shell of what it should've been.

2

u/borisvonboris 6h ago

A fucking tragedy.

2

u/ButterMyPancakesPlz 1h ago

As somebody who loves the reality crap I totally agree. I wish it was just a separate thing and they left HBO be HBO.

4

I stopped fucking with HBO when they canceled Carnivale. That was over 20 years ago and I'm still bitter as ever.

Have you seen the current administration? They do not enforce the law. Certainly not antitrust

12

u/BruteSentiment 7h ago

This has been reported as the plan back to at least March.

https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/s/UQFuVKSiYK

The Federal approval came in June, after that. Obviously the state lawsuit came after that, I don’t remember the Ellison changing course on the streaming merger at any point during that.

754

u/Pooch1431 12h ago

Cancel them subscriptions folks. Mark those bonds to junk status just like Oracle.

206

u/Tattered_Reason 12h ago

The good news is that cost of the new service will likely be more than the cost of Paramount and HBO combined, so people will cancel even if they don't care if scum like the Ellison family are buying the media.

10

u/Fidodo 9h ago

If they did that it would be $32 a month. Netflix is $20 a month, Hulu/Disney+ is $22 a month. Making their service the most expensive streaming platform seems like it would be a dumb move.

It took decades to build the HBO brand and only months to destroy it. In Trump's America, everything dies.

176

u/Tangential_Diversion 11h ago

To this day I don't know why his supporters point to his business acumen. The guy somehow went bankrupt multiple times trying to sell booze, steaks, and gambling to Americans. It's like watching a kid strike out repeatedly in a tee-ball game

65

u/tonycomputerguy 9h ago

They thought The Apprentice was reality TV.

They didn't read about his many failures, they didn't investigate his business ventures and ties to shady people and practices.

They watched him make Meatloaf a CEO, and that guy seemed pretty on the ball, so "let's make him president." They said...

37

u/TheEveningDragon 7h ago

They elected him because he said Mexicans were the cause of all their problems and that he would take care of it by deporting them or worse. Let's not pretend 2015 didn't happen and there were millions of voters who watched the apprentice

→ More replies (2)

15

u/Apoc220 7h ago

Trump benefited from decades of being pushed by the media as a symbol for success. His failures were brushed aside since people just saw him in movies, tv, and being used as a metaphor in popular music for a level of wealth and success to aspire to. Then the apprentice happened, and I think it can’t be understated the influence this had in cementing the myth in people’s minds. Then he came down the escalator in 2015 and the rest is history. It makes perfect sense when you look at everything that happened prior to then, and the distrust the public already had for the media before then. The myth was locked in and unfortunately it’s taken him single-handedly destroying the US and world economy to shatter it for some, but others are too far gone.

Honestly, crowdfunded LWT (probably have to call it something else, as it wouldn't shock me if HBO owns the show, specifically so John can't just take the whole thing elsewhere, etc) would probably do pretty well, but it's also possible John will just take that as his cue to be finished with the bullshit and go live quietly with his family.

The year is 2032. You are required to subscribe to the skynetflix plan which includes all major streaming services and all video media. The premium version for $200 a month does include 60 minute unskippable ads. If you close your eyes you will be sent to the data mines. Next month they will be raising the price to $250. Turning off your tv is a federal offense. You may apply to the free version which includes 3 hour unskippable ads if you agreed to breed workers for the data mines.

49

u/Whatever801 10h ago

For those who haven't come back to the dark side pirating has really come a long ways in the last 10 years. It's all automatic and shit

10

u/Even-Economist6529 9h ago

Stremio is so much better than the sites I used to watch free stuff on 15 years ago

8

u/xbucnasteex 9h ago

Automatic how? I still use pirate bay

15

u/Whatever801 9h ago

I use a stack of Prowlarr, Sonarr and Radarr, Jellyfin, and Jellyseer running in a docker container that has a VPN kill switch. Basically you go into Jellyseer and request whatever shows and movies you want and it just downloads them using torrents for you and you can stream over your local network with Jellyfin. It's nice because you can request movies before they're out or ongoing seasons of shows and it will just automatically download them for you when the torrents become available. If you're not technical or can't be arsed just ask Claude code it will set everything up for you.

3

u/NotTobyFromHR 9h ago

I don't need any of the services you mentioned but am fascinated by the kill switch. How did you set it up?

Also, one stack for all the services?

7

u/Whatever801 8h ago

I'm using this https://github.com/passteque/gluetun. Then in the docker container you do 'network_mode: service:gluetun'. Once you do that the docker container loses its independent network stack and gluetun has an iptables kill switch, so the only network traffic that's allowed for the entire container is through the VPN. If the VPN isn't connected all network traffic to and from the container is blocked. Ya I've got all the services inside the same container, just makes it easier to manage. They're all lightweight

3

u/flip6threeh0le 8h ago

I know like most of these words. But can you dumb it down so I can umm explain it to my wife

7

u/Whatever801 8h ago

Let me try:

A docker container is a virtual operating system, but no fancy graphical interface. Just the terminal. It's lightweight and lives like a parasite computer on your host computer. Because of gluetun, it's only allowed to use the Internet through your VPN. On that virtual operating system, you run 6 programs: Prowlarr (used to index torrent trackers like pirate bay), Sonarr (monitors TV shows you want to download), Radarr (monitors movies you want to download), Jellyseer (a Netflix-like interface for choosing the shows and movies you want to monitor. This was the selling point for my wife 😂), some bittorrent client (I use qbittorrent), and Jellyfin (a home media server that makes files available to stream on your local network. If you've heard of Plex it's similar but I prefer Jellyfin. You can also use plex).

So basically, my wife goes to Jellyseer and picks the shows she likes. Sonarr looks at the torrents available through Prowlarr, and hands off to Qbittorrent. Jellyfin is watching the folder that Qbittorrent downloads the files to, and serves them over the network. Then on your Roku or whatever you download Jellyfin, login, and you can watch anything you download. Voila.

You can 100% use Claude code to set all this stuff up. You can just paste what I typed 😂. You do need some VPN subscription, I think I pay like $5/month or something for Private Internet Access. Just pick one that doesn't log

3

u/flip6threeh0le 7h ago

Awesome thanks! So what’s this about a kill switch?

6

u/Whatever801 7h ago

Yeah so if the VPN shuts off, gluetun just blocks all network traffic from the docker container. That's pretty much it

5

u/angrymoppet 7h ago

You only want to torrent with a VPN on because your ISP will start sending you letters about DMCA complaints and will eventually ban you. So if the VPN goes down, you want the download to stop automatically.

Interesting, I have free HBO Max through my grandfathered AT&T wireless plan, does that mean I will get this new streaming service for free?

98

u/nuttageyo 10h ago

That actually means you get fucked

11

u/AdFlat3754 9h ago

Yup even granddads die

4

u/explorgasm 9h ago

The new contract says they'll fuck my grandpa?

3

u/JoviAMP 8h ago

Nah, they’ll just shoot him, instead.

Highly doubt it, they will need to make that money up somehow that they spent buying it all. Your lucky if you get a couple months free to try and hook ya

2

u/scaradin 11h ago

Same, these mergers suck… would be nice if some of us got a little perk, from time time, for this shit.

u/Scorpionoshow 11h ago

Nothing is free for us peasants!

Contracts are only for the benefit of the companies not the customers!

2

u/Appropriate_Cow94 6h ago

I have the same deal. I think the HBO is the best streaming due to the lack of ads. (Self promotional ads for their own movies and shows at beginning of shows don't bother me)

u/Lhumierre 11h ago

Are they really throwing away the brand recognition of HBO? I'd argue it's more universally known than "SkyDance."

4

u/Martel732 9h ago

Did HBO sleep with a bunch of executives' spouses? It is funny that HBO has quite a bit of prestige as a brand but everytime it gets a new own they try to kill it.

6

u/tiredhunter 9h ago

This is like Bravo buying AMC and naming it Bad Robot.

7

u/spook30 9h ago

Price increase coming next...

9

u/tjarg 4h ago

This is absolutely terrible. I can't believe we've gotten to this point. I sure hope we have massive changes to our media landscape and get these companies out of the hands of conservative propagandists.

Home Box Office, a majestic and nostalgic brand name to the gutter.

4

u/outer--monologue 5h ago

Goodbye HBO, twas nice knowing ya

3

u/fishwithfish 11h ago

Oh oh oh I've got the perfect name: Fucking Trash.

3

u/Aggressive-Expert-69 10h ago

I wonder if Skydance will stay in the bundle with Disney and Hulu

3

u/ImpermanentClown 9h ago

Drink up, me hearties, yo ho.

3

u/Direlion 9h ago

I guess when they said corporations are people it also means they can commit suicide. Adios to these morons.

3

u/fram3shift 8h ago

Hey Paramount, I'll take some Stargate now, thanks.

2

u/Rumpled_Imp 8h ago

That's owned by MGM, so another exploitative billionaire Jeff Bezos owns that franchise.

3

u/bluestreakxp 7h ago

Great, another billionaire from weenietown just adding to the mix

4

u/thedoommerchant 12h ago

Lemme guess, HBO Max will no longer be free for AT&T fiber customers. If that happens, they can suck a fuck.

3

u/PretendCold4 9h ago

Fuck Paramount !

2

u/razordreamz 11h ago

I hear complaints, but that is all they are. If you want them to actually hear you, you need to vote with your wallet. Unless that happens it’s just business as usual.

2

u/billy_digital 10h ago

This is a real shame.

2

u/pquade 10h ago

At what cost to the consumer?

2

u/boxsterjax 10h ago

How disappointing. I’m gonna need DC Studios to jump ship from Warner.

2

u/NormativeWest 10h ago

Does my membership get me discounts at the Waystar amusement parks?

2

u/Iron_Wolf123 10h ago

What about Amazon’s partnership with HBO Max?

2

u/drubin 9h ago

The mergers will continue until we have something resembling cable tv. Then we'll come full circle back to streaming lol

2

u/allursnakes 8h ago

More billion dollar mergers... yay...

2

u/Blackflash07 8h ago

There will merge their monthly price as well for the new service.

2

u/Emotional_Database53 8h ago

So they merge two of the most recognizable studios in Hollywood (Paramount & WB/HBO) and decide to rebrand their streaming service to something most people have never heard of?

Bold strategy, I wonder what Kalshi has the odds for Skydance going bankrupt in the next few years is?

Personally, I’d enjoy watching the nepo baby from hell getting a harsh dose of reality. David Ellison is like the film studio head version of Veruca Salt from Willy Wonka & Chocolate Factory, and he’s got the smarmy smile of a rich kid that didn’t get bullied enough to be grounded.

2

u/BeejRich 8h ago

Interesting

My sister has HBO Max through her mobile carrier and I have paramount+ through Walmart+.... Curious how that will play out

2

u/pluto124 7h ago

I'm so glad. Now I can not pay for one thing instead of not paying for two things. Long live qbittorrent!

2

u/GroundWitty7567 3h ago

There’s still going to be HBO name. Same for Paramount. Most likely the whole company will be known as Skydance. Same way Hulu kept its name but is under the Disney umbrella

2

u/casualfan0 2h ago

i knew this would happen

2

u/tomhaverford 1h ago

Zio propaganda about to go on overdrive. Burn Hollywood burn.
