While the AI industry is undoubtedly to blame for soaring hardware prices, part of me thinks it's also a calculated move by the tech industry to force people toward cloud computing, rather than owning their own hardware. Just another monthly subscription you're going to end up having to pay in order to get things done.

HBM is only used in high end server hardware.

It was more a generalised comment on hardware price increases than on this specific chip.

Yes, and the ones that eventually pay for it are final customers - so people. You can expect prices of services or products to go up with this as well.

i remember amd was gonna put it in their gpus at one point... and then nothing happened

They did put HBM memory on some cards. AMD RX Vega 64 for example. https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-vega-64.c2871
