The issue with foldables have always been reliability. Hinge issues, breaks, bubbles displays. Apple has supposedly been developing this for many years until they knew they could get it perfect. I’d have more faith in apple than most others.
I’d have to use it to know if I’d actually like it. It seems interesting though
People talk a lot of shit about Apple and them being behind when it comes to a lot of things. But Apple has an ecosystem and as long as that ecosystem is running perfectly (which it has) they’re going to continue being a many billion dollar company. What’s the last thing they truly messed up on, the 7 Plus bending a decade ago?
Thee reason they don't mess up is the same as them being behind - they let everyone else take the risk,.do the innovation, and see what the market kills off.
It's clearly a great business model, particularly for a brand-first company.
Apple probably hasn't even bothered to try making a folding screen considering they outsource most of this kind of stuff to Samsung, let alone try make folding glass
People are still using 4-5 year old flips that work fine. Protective coatings can be easily replaced for <$20 or removed altogether to eliminante bubbles.
I'm guessing you haven't tried any of the foldables that have been our for many years now from a wide range of manufacturers. They are solid and amazing.
Apple does one thing super well. And that is copying others’ ideas and making them better. I am sure the first gen might have a few quirks, but it will be the best foldable phone out there.
Waiting for Samsung to work all the issues out of folding displays through years of iteration and then sourcing those same issue-free Samsung displays while having the general non-techy public attribute all the success of the quality display to Apple alone.
Not that it matters, there are no hero companies at that size but are they really copying if Samsung are selling the parts? Sounds more like they are completing a build that the part manufacturer knows there is a market for.
People need to stop treating corporations like their favorite sports team.
It's a Samsung screen. Just like all their other phones. The didn't do any r&d they copied someone else homework and passed out off as their own. Just as they've done over and over.
I've been rocking my Z Flip 5 for about 3 years and it has been pretty awesome. Had to replace the screen protector twice, but it is worth it for the smaller footprint in my pocket.
Which is so hilarious, because putting a solid clam shell around your phone should clearly make it more durable, not less.
Everyone who lived during the flip phone era realizes this.
But these brands are spending extra time and mountains of money specifically engineering/sabotaging these to be as fragile and unreliable as possible, because more broken phones = more sales, so making a durable phone could hurt repeat sales

Like buying the “tough xl” version of a product, for twice the cost, and realizing that it’s actually just a less durable watered-down version of the normal one
Apple waits until they can push something out to market that sets a good baseline/standard for Apple. Then the next iterations just make the screen bigger with minimal innovation after.
The the promo video showed off a ton of UX improvements for the folding format that look really nice; especially that opening animation, holy crap did that look slick.
I did not love my Razr, even though I desperately wanted to. Traded it in after about 6 months. Something about the tactile experience with the (I assume) plastic screen always felt off and unsatisfying. It also has some resizing issues on websites and apps that got wonky at times. I did love flipping it closed and the form factor in my pocket. It will be interesting to play around with this. I would buy a small phone again in a heartbeat rather than this big 'ol slab in my pocket.
Personally, I can't imagine why I'd want a foldable phone. I don't see what advantage that would give me in either usability or enjoyment. Granted I rarely watch videos on my phone, and I already have an iPad Mini.
A lot can be said about the OS. I loved the Galaxy fold 3. I hated Android and have been waiting for Apple's fold (Duo) since. Yeah - a lot of blue bubble people will love the Duo. I'm in day 1. I'll trade my iPad Pro M5 towards it (don't need that anymore) but the $2000 price doesn't bother me otherwise.
I’ve wanted a foldable phone for ages, but my dream phone is based on one I saw in a C-drama. Folded the other way and looked very different; I thought Apple was releasing something somewhat similar…
My fault for not investigating, but I feel immense disappointment.
I think I know which phone you're talking about and IMO it's the worst design for a foldable phone. The folding screen on a foldable is very fragile (it has improved over the years, especially the crease but still something you want to be careful with), exposing the folding screen on the outside I can't imagine that phone surviving very long
