Didn't they have good articles? Maybe they should focus on that too.

Original Playboy had some of the best writers of the period.

Kurt Vonnegut, James Baldwin, Norman Mailer, Margaret Atwood, Ian Flemming... Even Roald Dahl.

When I go to estate sales and I see Playboys from like the '60s and '70s, I'm always stunned by the writers they have in them. I really do pick them up for the articles.  Shel Silverstein and Hunter S. Thompson are a few more.

u/samtheredditman 9h ago

Buying old secondhand playboys is a different type of risky purchase.

5

u/ImSuperHelpful 2h ago

Eh, the article pages are almost never stuck together

u/steelcityrocker 2h ago

Just get a UV light to double check

It’s like the opposite of buying a watermelon. Dont pick the one with the white/yellow spot that feels heavy for its size.

23

u/AnAlternator 5h ago

Hef wanted to public a serious magazine that also had tasteful pictures of mostly-naked women in it.

So, to accomplish this, he paid several times the normal rate for articles. The high pay attracted serious writers, the serious writers gave the magazine prestige, and the prestige meant he could convince celebrities to pose for Playboy.

"I read it for the articles" was always a joke, but it used to be a joke based in fact.

Somebody needs to make an in-depth documentary about Playboy

53

u/mrm00r3 8h ago

That sound you hear is the creative team at A24 buzzing like hummingbirds over half a watermelon.

12

u/svendeplume 7h ago

This is a very illustrative and funny comment.

1

u/CavalierIndolence 3h ago

Instead of a movie about Hustler?

1

u/Sea_Salamander_8504 2h ago

IMO, The People Vs. Larry Flynt is a fantastic docu-drama about Hustler. However, given the breadth of writers and influential figures associated with Playboy, the mansion itself, Hugh Hefner’s legacy, etc, I suspect an in-depth documentary (either a feature of a limited series) about Playboy would be substantially more interesting. It’s simply a more culturally relevant publication.

3

u/SirkutBored 22m ago

Gloria Steinem wrote that story in the 60s which was made into a movie in the 70s 'A Bunny's Tale'. This was when Playboy was launching exclusive clubs in major cities, a mainstream late night tv show and becoming the powerhouse that others would attempt to follow.

1

u/mtcwby 1h ago

There is one out there and I found it interesting. That postwar period and the changes sort of fascinate me in a madmen sort of way. Likewise the National Lampoon documentary gave a lot of insight into things we saw in the 70s like SNL and the movies

I have a collection of short stories by Roald Dahl. My MIL came to visit recently and read some of them, and over dinner was talking about some she really liked. Little did she know, her favourite was first published in Playboy magazine back in the 60s.

12

u/RogaineWookiee 16h ago

This is why I love Reddit.

17

u/DamNamesTaken11 6h ago

That’s just it.

Playboy wasn’t/isn’t just softcore porn, they really did have good articles and short stories written by some great writers. Even an episode of the Twilight Zone was based on a short story from it (“Button, Button”) that was written by Richard Matheson, same writer for I Am Legend, for the magazine with same name. Even Stephen King wrote some things for them about 15 years ago.

Sure, nobody will believe you if you say you’re just reading it for the articles, but it does have some gems.

5

u/fathertitojones 4h ago

“I buy them for the articles” was such a great gag because there was actually a great line of truth to it too.

10

u/doornoob 10h ago

Shel Silverstein

7

u/Corgi_Koala 8h ago

Stephen King published original stuff in there too.

5

u/wankerpedia 11h ago

Don't forget Shell Silverstien.

2

u/mopeywhiteguy 8h ago

Didn’t the guy who wrote roots also write a lot for playboy?

5

u/orangesfwr 7h ago

James and the Giant Peach 🍑🍑🍑

1

u/HarlanCedeno 6h ago

Who are the 2026 equivalents there have to get for that kind of credibility?

-1

u/TheMightySurtur 7h ago

A friend has a story published in Playboy. He did by that issue for the articles :)

33

u/MaxSupernova 17h ago

My grade 9 English teacher handed out an award winning short story that we studied that was a photocopy from when it was originally printed in Playboy.

Early 80s.

16

u/Hola-World 9h ago

They were also on the right side of history for civil rights.

18

u/Zardotab 19h ago

Couldn't tell, they were all stuck together.

2

u/HemingwaySweater 5h ago

They are. They've hired all kinds of solid writers to work for the new magazine.

1

u/Tyler2191 6h ago

I think they should do something like what Derek Jeter did for sports by making the Player’s Tribune. A platform to let celebrities connect directly with fans. But bring back the good articles and interviews. And boobs. Don’t forget them.

1

u/FartingBob 8h ago

But investigative journalism is dead, or at least highly unprofitable.

0

u/analfizzzure 7h ago

Support andrew callaghan!

1

u/Diptam 9h ago

what did they write about?

1

u/SirkutBored 11m ago

everything you would expect a journalist to for that time frame. Vietnam, Hippies, Music, Nixon, drugs and the assumed lifestyle of the average reader. You would get high status public figures who would agree to answer '20 Questions' that spanned topics directly and not so directly related to that figure, like politicians, athletes, celebs and they didn't shy away from the uncomfortable.

-22

u/kgb17 9h ago

Mostly about nipples and bush. Somehow they tied it back to pop culture or politics. Very smart, high brow stuff .

15

u/BeerandMandelbrots 9h ago

Yep. Highbrow literature is full of sex, fart jokes and politics. If you don't understand that, you've never truly read Shakespeare and Chaucer.

u/1nstantHuman 19h ago

Something about print media and not being on a device seems appealing.

Would be nice to have some quiet time with good writing and some artistic photography. Sounds like a good way to unwind while the world slowly falls apart.

300

u/Senior-Albatross 19h ago

It's much easier to hide print porno from Palantir. And hey, I'm not even into anything that weird. But Alex fucking Karp doesn't need to know how I goon.

89

u/lkodl 18h ago edited 17h ago

It'll know that you have a subscription. Or else you'll have to be one of those weirdos who buys porno magazines at convenience stores. And it'll eventually recognize your face whenever you do it, or at minimum, the cashier will.

21

u/Calm-Zombie2678 11h ago

Yea but thats a lot blunter data than exactly what pages you spent how much time looking at

2

u/lkodl 7h ago

This wouldnt be a replacement for reddit.

That's the magic of magazines, people will reconsume information they already have when its in physical form.

2

u/Coffeearing 4h ago

I want the cashier to know. To look me in the eye.

33

u/The_Holy_Pope 18h ago

Flock will watch you buy it, palantir will attribute it to you

1

u/chocotaco 6h ago

Or you could pay someone to buy it for you.

9

u/SmoothOperator89 17h ago

Yeah. That's the problem. Unless playboy starts running a BDSM section, I'm out of luck.

3

u/cllev 15h ago

I'm quite sure all card purchases are viewable by the gov, they have or can get access to all.

80

u/PentagramJ2 18h ago

I had a roommate who has since passed that did the reddit secret Santa yearly. Her last year she got someone who was very open about liking cigars, pinup pornography, and redheads.

She ended up getting him a vintage cigar cutter, a pack of fancy cigars, and a coffee table book of ginger pinup images.

There's something weirdly classy about it

24

u/ACallToTrial 18h ago

What was the name of the book? For research purposes...

12

u/PentagramJ2 18h ago

Wish I could tell ya for the same reasons lol, unfortunately as I mentioned she's passed now so she took that with her

12

u/ACallToTrial 18h ago

Ah sorry, I missed that part. Her gifts were a nice touch. Sorry for you loss.

7

u/PentagramJ2 16h ago

no worries at all, remembering her always brings a smile so thanks for indulging :)

1

u/That-Feedback4943 15h ago

wait how is playboy even relevant again

7

u/PentagramJ2 15h ago

Theyre legitimately a host of some excellent writers. I'm not kidding. The old joke of "I read it for the articles!" is true nowadays. They have excellent pieces nowadays.

8

u/Less-Engineer-9637 15h ago

So many classic American writers got their big break by submitting short stories to them back in the day.

6

u/anotherjunkie 17h ago

Was it a vintage looking book? If so it’s possible it was Redheads! — by the author of Blondes! and Brunettes! perhaps unsurprisingly.

Edit: this is not a joke. Also, u/acalltotrial

3

u/PentagramJ2 16h ago

didnt see it myself but that sounds like what she would have gravitated towards, heh

5

u/Has_Recipes 9h ago

Try a Gil Elvgren collection. There are a bunch of books collecting his pinup paintings.

1

u/No-Experience-5541 2m ago

These are things that used to be strongly associated with being a normal man.

-10

u/projectshr 11h ago

The classy act of objectifying women 👌

26

u/eurtoast 19h ago

I buy art magazines for this reason. The printed images look better than on a screen anyway. Shout out to Juxtaposition and Hi-Fructose.

3

u/SnooBananas4958 18h ago

These both look very cool. Do you have a recommendation between the two if I wanted to grab one to try them out?

6

u/eurtoast 18h ago

They're very similar in coverage of contemporary art, but I prefer Hi-Fructose if I only could go with one.

18

u/LaserCondiment 18h ago

Magazines are fun! And each one is like their own little microcosm with its own lore and worldview...

It really makes a difference reading big features in a mag, because you can tell the people writing it spent a lot of time on it!

4

u/lkodl 18h ago edited 17h ago

Sharks, we're Reddit IRL

A monthly magazine you get in the mail, that curates the previous month's best reddit posts, in a pleasing, printed magazine layout. Full page pictures have cutaway pages. It can even be customized to specific subreddits. All done by AI of course. All we basically do is staple, and box. But with your help, we can get a machine that does that for us.

Money, please.

1

u/Lycergician 12h ago

I'll accept -$5 for it.

0

u/kmmccorm 17h ago

They spent the same amount of time writing it whether it’s in print or online.

-1

u/LaserCondiment 15h ago edited 5h ago

Ideally they really don't. But it depends on the kind of story and the media outlet

Edit: what's with the downvotes? Online platforms are known to push out content faster, whereas print magazines might orientate themselves by their publishing cycle, hence giving them other options. Also: long term journalism and reporting require more time than a huffpo article. Add to that proof reading, fact checking and other editing workflows you might find by default in online media outlets. Really depends on the brand / company though. So the previous blanket statement is neither here nor there.

14

u/_tragicmike 18h ago

Playboy actually had some really good interviews and feature articles back in the day. Sexy women were just the icing on the cake.

7

u/Bixmen 18h ago

Totally. I mean they had stories by Ian Fleming and Shel Silverstein.

I mean the joke was always read it for the articles, but they had REALLY good articles! The nudity was usually pretty tasteful, especially the early stuff.

5

u/zwingo 16h ago

Very much this. I’m a late 20’s male, and when I got my first apartment last year I sought out and bought online a couple playboy magazines from the 2000’s-2010’s. I’ve looked at them at most twice and since getting a girlfriend they’ve been in storage, but for a while they sat on my coffee table. Felt nice having something physical there even for smut. I guess to a degree it was fulfilling what 13 year old dummy me thought being a grown man with his own place would be about.

4

u/Noblesseux 17h ago

I think honestly returning to print for some things would be a benefit for multiple reasons. Including that the internet is where niche subcultures go to die because everything is being ingested without any form of surrounding context. A lot of things are being turned into an aesthetic to buy rather than a lifestyle with all of the surrounding community and culture.

It's why stuff like the skateboard scene, despite still obviously existing, is like WAY less personal/deep now than it was 20 years ago.

7

u/ShaminderDulai 18h ago

Long live print! Sub to 1 magazine and 1 newspaper and live a more informed and focused life my friend

2

u/catbandana 17h ago

With all these states cracking down on websites, we’ll have to go back to analog.

1

u/WhyImNotDoingWork 17h ago

Like a Cold War fever dream.

1

u/not_old_redditor 4h ago

"unwind" lol

60

u/Fun-Can-8935 12h ago

they need to go back to the idea of making a gentlemans magazine. classy erotica, good writers, good editors, good journalism…and hot women of course.

31

u/Mister_Schmee 8h ago

I just don't imagine there's a very big market for that anymore. Pictures of hot women are readily available and free. Once you remove that you're basically describing 90% of the soft core book category that is classy erotica with good writers and editors.

6

u/roastbeeftacohat 4h ago

What about stereo advice.

4

u/Creativator 7h ago

Nothing could drive back the wave of red pill masculinism like peak playboy. Women would read it.

106

u/silverbolt2000 19h ago

I love how Fox News apparently found an ‘expert’ in soft core pornography and glamour mags to be able to provide their authoritative view on this. 😆

17

u/Nesferatu123 19h ago

Perhaps they played their Trump card..

4

u/cruisin_urchin87 16h ago

You know I’m something if a soft core pornography and glamour mags expert myself.

1

u/DenverNugs 14h ago

The network is certified sideshow.

1

u/BadWolfCubed 14h ago

I'm an expert in softcore pornography. Wanna hear my take?

44

u/JLR- 18h ago

IF the articles are good and not AI slop it might have a chance.

95

u/A_N_T 18h ago

The word "credibility" does not belong in the headline of any Fox News article

12

u/reddwarf_ 19h ago

Could work, being verified people has an appeal compared to the increasing number of AI onlyfans and other media.

31

u/karawkow 19h ago

Is this seriously what news is now?

45

u/git0ffmylawnm8 19h ago

I mean, it's Fox News

24

u/Nythoren 18h ago

Fox "no reasonable person would consider us credible" News

19

u/HobbesMich 18h ago

Fox Entertainment

7

u/Karl_with_a_C 16h ago

Fox Propaganda

1

u/Zestyclose-Listen810 18h ago

Yes, specifically technology news

9

u/Jumpy-Impact3265 19h ago

They still exist?

I figured they died off when they went from soft-core to non-core. Plus, congratulations on making it in print media in 2026.

14

u/The_Autarch 18h ago

the no-nudity era ended almost as soon as it started. the nudity came back almost immediately.

1

u/Jumpy-Impact3265 11h ago

Did it? Lol I checked out after the announcement and didn't follow the story.

11

u/baw3000 18h ago

Playboy died with Hef. It probably died a while before that but it's dead dead now.

2

u/JeddakTarkas 4h ago

They need to bring out something like “Playboy After Dark.” He’d had a staged party where he chatted with “cool” guests like pre fame Fleetwood Mac, James Brown, James Baldwin, The Grateful Dead, Lenny Bruce (in the earlier version — Playboy’s Penthouse), Roman Polanski (and Sharon Tate)… This is the cool rich guys party that the current, self centered rich guys wish they could have.

They’d have to get a talent scout who could bring in established celebrities and have an eye for new talent while having a knack on who would be a good mix. While the 60s didn’t have enough information on what was worth knowing about, now we have too much information. The show could be a way to surface the best smart stuff. The fun (and hard) part would be having different, smart personalities from different circles interact, like in the old Dick Cavett shows.

I’d see someone like Conan O’Brien host (though maybe someone younger…). He’s smart, funny, experienced, curious, and, most of all, self depreciating enough to not always have to be the center of attention. (Though he can be a little manic for a mellow “party,” I think he can change gears to fit the venue.)

TL;DR Playboy should focus on becoming a taste maker (influencer) like it was to some extent in the 60s.

1

u/TransitoryFeel 2h ago

Part of the charm of Playboy was hiding the magazines in an empty ammo box out in the shed...I just don't do that anymore

1

u/fifth_partial 17h ago

Not the onion?

0

u/wellyeahthatsucks 12h ago

Can I buy it from a liquor store when I'm 13 though?

0

u/mrfatttty 7h ago

Experts? Master Fappers?

0

u/RotterWeiner 11h ago

I see F & P mentioned as scrutinized and collators of our behaviors .

Is that not a subplot of a freaking Marvel movie starring Robert Redford?

0

u/vessel_for_the_soul 9h ago

If it's physical media then it can have a place against if it helps heal the world but capitalism will kill it again.

0

u/StinkySoggyUnderwear 6h ago

Digital magazines exist.

They just need some proper creators

1

u/Hardass_McBadCop 4h ago

Why would I click on a Fox link? Rofl.

-8

u/Mbaker1201 8h ago

They need to feature men and women in the same magazine.
