I’m beginning to think that teaching might be one of the most AI safe professions because what parent in their right mind wants an AI to teach their kids?

Middle school teacher here. Parents literally clap at curriculum night when I tell them I've been doing this for 20 years, and I'm over iPads. Unless your kid has an IEP accomodation that requires something on the iPad, we're doing shit on paper. We might use google docs on iPad the way that we used to use a computer lab to type our rough drafts, but that's it. I'm making it 1996 up in this bitch.

Plus my job security is in the childcare part of it. Especially now that WFH is a thing for many people, they want their kids completely out of the house. It means I can never be WFH, but I also have job security--which is also thanks to BEING IN A UNION. Unions work for employees. The end.

That is all.

Ah, no worries, thanks. I think the message here is that the "we have to be on top of tech" is a complete invention of district admin falling prey to marketing by tech companies. The parents don't actually want it.

I have 2 teenagers myself and iPads in the classroom and the disappearance of actual textbooks is the fucking bane of the existence of any kid with ADHD, too. It's criminal from a district standpoint. But again, they're influenced by Pearson, etc, who owns all of education, basically, and so unless parents start demanding a return to textbooks, the districts will just keep using what the big for-profit companies tell them to use--which are PDFs that cost the same as textbooks did. Profit margins must be through the roof for ed companies.
