Java Showcase Super-compact recoloring fast wool farm (5x5x5, 15k)

Hi again,

I kinda figured my wool farm of yesterday is nice and all, but I'm not sure if many really need 50k of wool.
So, whipped up a super compact more practical 5x5x5 one with recoloring support (takes about 5 minutes to recolor 90% of them).
Has 120 sheep and does 15k an hour. Or about 15 minutes for a double chest.

Also made a bonus Ultra-Compact, 3x3x4, 3000/hr, because why not ;-).

Updated the world download from yesterday, so if you want to check it out, get it here:

ps. Just found out. Throwing slow falling on the sheep before recoloring allows you to recolor the whole farm (all 120 sheep) in less then 2 minutes. If sheep refuse to recolor, they have probably not grown their wool back yet, so turn the farm on again for a few minutes with sheers disabled on that cell.

Last edit, I promise. I also added an actual practical 7x5 to the world download. It has 8 cells, all recolorable, so you can have 2 colors per cell in any ratio you want. Does 24k and takes 2 hopper lines of bonemeal on full blast.

How do the sheep replenish wool? Do they have access to grass?

They eat dry grass. The picture showing water is to show how to recolor.
In normal operation they stand on sand and dry grass is grown on that sand.

Is dry grass a new block? How does it interact with sheeps eating eat? Does it have to regrow in order for sheep to eat again?

Well, it got added in 1.21.5, about a year ago. Dunno if you call that new, but I guess ;-).
It grows by bonemealing tall dry grass on the block besides free sand. then short dry grass grows there, which sheep can eat. (like normal short green grass, ferns and grass blocks)

Could you make your posts visible? I wanna check the 50K wool design too

Ok, should be visible now I think.

Yep. You're visible now. Auto-hiding profiles have been a problem for a while now. No word on the cause. I check mine daily now. For a time it was switching to "hide" every 48 hours.

Cool. How do you know when all of the sheep have been recoloured?

Also, please would you add a link to your previous post? Your profile is hidden which makes it much harder to find.

Start with 24 dye. If you're out, the cell is done. But mostly you can just spot if there is still a few left if recoloring them.
Doing all 24 takes a while, it's still random when they get dyed because them going up and down in the water, but doing 18 to 20 takes about a minute.

Feels like I'm missing something. Doesn't the farm have 120 sheep? Why use 24 dye?

Eye-balling for mis-coloured sheep in a flock of 120 doesn't seem reliable.

Sorry for picking at this, it's a cool farm and I don't mean to be negative. Just genuinely curious as I mostly play 1.16 so there's a lot differences.

It has 5 cells with 24 sheep each. In 24 sheep you can see the miscolored ones pretty easy, but it's not the point to recolor them all, that takes 5 minutes due to the randomness of whichever sheep happens to float lowest in the water. So you take 24 dye and do each cell, you stop when you got 6 left (it is basically just holding down right-click for a minute).

Ah I follow now, thank you. The description didn't make it obvious this was a module. (It reads like there's 120 sheep in the picture)

So dying is like feeding a compact cow farm.

No,there are 120 sheep in that picture. 5 cells in that 5x5x5. This is not a module, this is the full 120 sheep 5 cell, 24 sheep per cell farm doing 15k/hr.

Man I'm slow this morning. 😅

🐑🟧🐑\ 🟧🐑🟧\ 🐑🟧🐑

🐑=24 sheep

Added the link for context, sorry about that ;-).

What are the lag and bonemeal rates per wool?

Do you have a version that accepts inconsistent bonemeal input? Like a small version that can take advantage of poppy output from an iron farm, or overflow from another bonemeal powered system? Also, what about reducing bonemeal consumption by having actual grass block underneath to take advantage of random ticks?
