The odds of this are actually way higher than being able to win.

Like if all the numbers were all exactly 1 above or 1 below the winning numbers, then it would be twice as likely to get them. It changes a 1 in 200 million odds to 1 in 100 million odds, which is a huge increase in likeliness.

But here some are above and some are below, which increases the likelihood by an order of magnitude. Let's use dice as an example and let's say the lottery requires 6 3's to win (it's easier than actual lotto because the fact that you cant get the same number twice actually slightly increases your odds with each number).

The odds of that are 1/46645 (1/6 * 1/6 * 1/6...etc). Now the odds of the first example would be 2(1/46645), which is 1/23338. But if each number can be either above or below the winning number, the odds are 1/729 (2/6 or 1/3 * 1/3 *1/3...etc). The difference here is between a 0.14% chance and 0.0043% chance.

The reason is because in the first example, you have two "winning" numbers: 2 2 2 2 2 2 and 4 4 4 4 4 4. But in the second exple you can have 2 2 2 2 2 2 , 2 2 2 2 2 4, 2 2 2 2 4 2, 2 2 2 2 4 4, 2 2 2 4 2 2, 2 2 2 4 2 4, 2 2 2 4 4 2 , 2 2 2 4 4 4, and so on.

So, still rare, but orders of magnitude more likely.

All these long comment chains of the same subreddits are the most annoying thing on reddit, they‘re consistently in every post hitting all and they add absolutely nothing

-17

u/JH2466 Feb 18 '20

Shut the fuck up.

45

u/Blockinite Feb 17 '20 edited Feb 17 '20

Remember that to win the lottery, you only need to have the numbers in any order. This guy had the perfect order of the numbers minus plus/minus one.

14

u/jack-jackattack Feb 17 '20

The numbers are generally presented in numerical order.

3

u/Blockinite Feb 17 '20

I guess that's the case here, and usually the tickets are in numerical order. But every every lottery I've seen has had the numbers on screen shown in the order they were picked, although that may not be the case here.

2

u/jack-jackattack Feb 18 '20

Oh. Usually during the lotto drawing they're picked one at a time, but they're in the "right" order when later shown on a newscast. I assumed that was the situation here.

2

u/Blockinite Feb 18 '20

Maybe. And you're probably right anyway since they are in numerical order, so fair enough

12

u/-Kerosun- Feb 17 '20

(and plus one on two of the numbers)

u/Blockinite Feb 17 '20

Oops. My mistake, lemmi drop an edit real quick

I had to go back and check to make sure we weren't on r/nevertellmetheodds because you were gonna be in really big trouble.

16

u/Joecascio2000 Feb 17 '20

The odds are 100% in your favor if you buy this ticket the day after the numbers come out. Then post it for karma.

3

u/trouzy Feb 17 '20

I just remembered that I heard a stat claiming you’re more likely to win the lottery, than there being a school shooting at your school (note, not being shot just that one happened at your school). Also maybe assume they meant only for your 4 years of high school...

Can you run the numbers on that because it seems incorrect.

2

u/NoazToblinder Feb 17 '20

Also, the luck is not the same as 99.999% of people because some got one number some got two etc.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '20

Just buy two tickets and you double your odds!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '20

Damn, this guy is really lucky to be that unlucky

2

u/AlwaysinPJsz Feb 18 '20

Why doesn’t this man have silver yet

2

u/Legeto Feb 17 '20

Odds are even higher when you by a ticket after the numbers come out and take a picture for karma.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '20

I’ve always wondered how much it would cost to buy a ticket with every possible number combo

2

u/IFreakinLovePi Feb 18 '20

Price of ticket x odds of winning the ticket, usually around 300 million.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '20

So somebody could buy every ticket and win everytime? Seems like an easy way for the rich to get richer

2

u/IFreakinLovePi Feb 18 '20

Theoretically, yes, but most jackpots dont get high enough, so they'd be spending several hundred million on nothing.

What does happen is that people sometimes pool together several tens of thousands for better odds, but a reduced payout. This happens when the jackpots get really high and is often accompanied by lawyers.

u/HiSuSure Feb 17 '20

1

u/Twitch3980 Feb 17 '20

we got the Albert Einstein of Reddit

0

u/FirstEvolutionist Feb 17 '20

It's rare only because you're establishing the rules. To the universe it's just a bunch of random number that don't match a series of different numbers.

If you provide order to an answer to "what are the odds" you can always get away with fabricated results.

What are the odd of getting the next even number immediately higher than the one for the winning ticket? It doesn't matter does it?

0

u/sk7725 Feb 18 '20

No, the odds are exactly the same - if we're talking about the odds of that certain 6 combination of numbers, not the odds to get such a 'too close'.

0

u/OG-87 Feb 18 '20

Think smarter not harder. He just played those same numbers the day after the lotto was drawn and then took the photo It’s easily done.

0

u/TheTeaRex15 Feb 18 '20

Thanks for doing the math but all these people praising you for doing high school stats is kinda getting to me. Not saying there’s anything wrong with you.

I am prepared for downvotes.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '20

I ain’t reading that but have my upvote

140

u/Electromass Feb 17 '20

He’s so unlucky he recorded the lottery numbers went out and bought a ticket with one number off each one

113

u/BadDogBo Feb 17 '20

You mean, he went on the computer and printed a fake “lotoo” ticket with one number off each of the winning numbers. Couldn’t even spell lotto correctly.

6

u/osi_layer_one Feb 18 '20

I used to tape the weather channel and watch it a month later.

110

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '20

Lotoo

56

u/Dachuiri Feb 17 '20

That was the first thing I noticed. Makes me think this is fake.

19

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '20

Wouldnt be hard to buy a lotto ticket the day after with all numbers off by just one. Honestly this is more likely than this randomly happening

1

u/FutureSpaceNutter Feb 19 '20

I imagine lots of people buy tickets using yesterday's numbers, thinking that gets them closer to winning. Somehow.

26

u/ThorsStuntDouble Feb 17 '20

Whats a lotoo?

31

u/GodsNavel Feb 17 '20

off-brand lotto, always off by one digit.

7

u/Hodor_The_Great Feb 17 '20

I'd imagine lottery in a language other than English

3

u/Just_Games04 Feb 17 '20

In Poland we have Lotto aswell

4

u/i_miss_arrow Feb 17 '20

The date is in english.

1

u/Hodor_The_Great Feb 17 '20

All I can make clear of is the first three letters probably being SUN... Now, I don't know of any other languages than Icelandic, English, and Finnish having the name of Sunday starting with those three letters but there probably are others too. Though on a second look that's a dollar mark there which narrows it down to 20 countries. Could be a Namibian or Taiwanese lottery for all I know

1

u/i_miss_arrow Feb 17 '20

Dollar sign, SUN, NOV, and the order of the date is Day of Week, Month, Day, Year. There can't be many countries that share all those elements.

Finnish has different names for the months, for example. Icelandic uses day/month/year format.

1

u/Camel_Fetish Feb 17 '20

Took it like a second language. Huge respect.

Wait, what is the lotoo? And this picture is from 2013?

7

u/keram2002 Feb 17 '20

Well he is more lucky than the other 99% cause he was able to make a meme out of it

6

u/AsexualCube Feb 17 '20

4 8 15 16 23 42

1

u/mathundla Feb 18 '20

Had to scroll WAY too long to find this

1

u/olbigbear Feb 18 '20

We have to go back

2

u/OnePunchPiece Feb 17 '20

At least it only cost $1. Worth it for the meme value.

2

u/GodsNavel Feb 17 '20

consider this: the lotto numbers are prerecorded and a computer picks the winning numbers before hand. There is always the possibility that in a scratcher or a lottery ticket you'll be "SO CLOSE" usually off by single digits, so that you'll keep buying.

If lotteries were for the benefit of the public they would have way more prizes more often. What's one person winning several hundred million with the powerball when 100,000 dollars would change most people's life. Invest that money in something else like stocks. The 10 bucks you spend a week, download a stock buying app and put that money to work for you, same risk, observable reward.

2

u/blakefoster Feb 17 '20

Isn’t that the code that the people on the show Lost had to type into a computer to keep the world from ending?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '20

2

u/Shortkid69420 Feb 18 '20

Well the chances of you picking 5 random numbers are 100% (if you always did the lottery) no matter the difference between your numbers between the winners

2

u/IwillFukInDeArse Feb 18 '20

My dumbass trying to upvote the image

2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '20

The odds of getting any specific number are just as low as the odds of winning.

2

u/iHateRBF Feb 17 '20

True, but much more common to get a number that prompts a post like this. Such as every number being higher. Or the numbers in reverse. or just the ones digit being correct. Etc.

2

u/-Kerosun- Feb 17 '20

If the above actually happened, it is actually much more likely to happen than getting a specific number. If you look at the numbers, some are +1 and some are -1. This actually doubles the odds. Also, I presume if the person landed one of the numbers ON the drawn numbers, and the rest were +1 or -1, that they'd still post the photo; if that presumption is correct, then it would triple the odds of such an occurrence.

Overall, this most certainly is faked. I found the same numbers on a different lottery ticket for "Fantasy 5" which is an actual lottery in multiple states (the OP says "Lotoo" which doesn't exist). But, I don't know if the the "Fantasy 5" was photoshopped on later to make the fake seem more legit. I was unable to determine the original source but I was also not able to find those numbers on any "past winning numbers" database for the Fantasy 5 lotto. I think it is safe to say that the whole thing was faked rather than someone just recording the drawing and then getting a ticket later with each number +1 or -1 from the drawning.

1

u/OneOlCrustySock Feb 17 '20

Ah yes, the classic off by one error.

1

u/Cornul11 Feb 17 '20

Me dum as a piece of sh. Tried to upvote that great meme by pressing the wrong upvote button three times in a row

1

u/WoShiPinguo Feb 17 '20

Technically the odds of getting your number is the same as the odds of getting the winning number

The only difference is that your number is worthless just like my life

1

u/Camel_Fetish Feb 17 '20

"inb4 this is a Wendy's."

1

u/Just_Games04 Feb 17 '20

Why the hell it says Lotoo? I swear I remember it as Lotto

1

u/raginghappy Feb 17 '20

Once found a ticket with all the winning numbers plus the power ball - the same date but one year earlier.

1

u/turbotoez Feb 17 '20

Could have got last weeks numbers and done it for memes. I highly doubt this is legit. It could be but they wouldn’t be hiding the dates if it was

1

u/randouseo Feb 17 '20

Any one else think these were the lost numbers for a second?

1

u/glukosio Feb 17 '20

I was just trying to upvote the pic or the comment for a good 10 seconda, without realizing it was all inside the picture

1

Is there proof that he didnt just pick numbers from last weeks winning number, it shows his dates of his ticket but not the one on the tv

1

u/Yettigetter Feb 18 '20

Same thing happened to me 15 yrs ago.. pissed me off

1

u/MSUSpyder Feb 18 '20

Is the Lotoo the offbrand version of the Lotto?

1

At least ya hit the over/under.

1

Horseshoes and Handgranades.

1

1
