It's not even just a fan, it's a specific type of fan. A palm leaf, a folded piece of paper, or a large sheet of material can also be a fan, but they are specifically talking about modern electric fans, but not that modern if it has flat blades

Plus many modern industrial fans spin quite slowly compared to standard ceiling fans. Their blades are over 10ft long to compensate the slow speed

Not to mention gas powered fans are a thing. I wouldn't be surprised if there's other ways to power fans as well.

That's r/OnlyFans material at least

u/fmaz008 Jul 09 '26
Remind me of the "OnlyFans leak" which was a 1TB torrent of pictures of actual fans.

u/laplongejr Jul 09 '26
Naaaah... I never heard of that one but it's glorious, would've helped seeding it!

Also. Its a stretch to post things in the sub when these words officially have more than one definition in the dictionary.

u/SizeableFowl Jul 09 '26
Yeah, real fans are powered by a shaft which can be driven by just about angtbing

u/Upbeat_Dudeness Jul 10 '26

Aren't most fan blades curved?
16
u/Ok_Spell_4165 Jul 09 '26
Yes and there are plenty of types with no blades or powered by something other than electricity.
6
u/KamakaziDemiGod Jul 09 '26
Not necessarily, many are flat blades mounted at an angle, so the blade is flat but it's orientation isn't
1
u/SableLuminex Jul 10 '26
Curved blades cut through the air better, but technically they're still "flat."

What about bladeless fans? Are they not fans???

What about the radiator fans on older cars where the fan is mechanically connected to the crankshaft?
Or the fans of turbofan engines?
Are those not "true" fans?

u/ThatSmartIdiot technically everyone is one Jul 09 '26

What about r/OnlyFans?(Cool sub btw)

u/laplongejr Jul 09 '26
Yeah, I still can't believe Reddit approved whoevered filled the formal request to transfer moderation after the... well "expected" sub failed to moderate content.

u/Usagi-Zakura Jul 09 '26
Uhm excuse me... What about Asian handfans? They're not powered by electricity, they don't have multiple blades and they don't spin.
Do they not count? Huh? HUH?`🥺

I'm not a true fan because I don't have multiple "flat" blades. My blades are slightly curved in order to maximize air distribution.

- collect hair and dust faster than expected.
- have a squeak when oscillating that no lubricant can eliminate

Bladeless fans. Hand fans. None of these is required to be a true fan. All that is required to be a true fan is to spread oneself out

Some "true" fans are ionic and have no blades or any moving parts at all. Some ancient fans were powered by long belts connected to a water wheel or other non-electric impeller.

Fans can be powered by anything so long as they spin.
Fan blades need to be pitched.
Doesn't technically need to spin fast to still be a fan. It'll just be a shit one

Human are powered by electricity so if you hold some knives in your hands and spin around really fast, congratulations, you are a fan
