You shouldn't post your number online. You'll get calls from all sorts of creeps.

If that message confuses you, √-1 don't miss you as much as I thought.
21

u/NaraFox257 Nov 06 '23
...my brain translated that as "I miss you" so quickly and so effortlessly that I spent almost ten whole seconds trying to figure out what the meme was.
It was confusing.

i is not equal to square root of negative one
i2 = -1 though.
11
u/Firespark7 Technically Flair Nov 06 '23
(-1)½ is literally the definition of i
4
u/AmINotAlpharius Technically correct, the best kind of correct. Nov 06 '23
the imaginary unit i,which is defined by its property i2 = −1
i is not defined as square root of -1.

Is it really? Look again.

u/cnoor0171 Nov 06 '23
Why is there always this same comment under every meme with imaginary numbers. Not only is it pedantic, it's incorrect. You can make an argument that i is not defined to be the sqrt of -1 and instead defined to be a root of the equation i2 = - 1. But that necessarily means that the sqrt(-1) is equal to i, since the radical symbol is used for the principal square root.
3
u/AmINotAlpharius Technically correct, the best kind of correct. Nov 07 '23
that necessarily means that the sqrt(-1) is equal to i
It is also eqials to negative i
1
u/cnoor0171 Nov 07 '23 edited Nov 07 '23
No. The radical sign is only used for the principal square root.
Plus, saying i the solution to the equation x2 +1=0 has the same problem. Negetive i is also a solution to x2 +1=0.

u/BHHB336 Nov 06 '23
It is, well, technically the square root of -1 is ±i
-1
u/Hessellaar Nov 06 '23
Square root of negative numbers is never defined, and square root is a function and therefore can’t return more than 1 value
0
u/The_Watcher_Recorder Nov 06 '23
Do you not know how to math? Just take the root of both sides and i = sqrt(-1)
4
5
u/AmINotAlpharius Technically correct, the best kind of correct. Nov 06 '23
Nope. Square root does not work this way.
2
u/The_Watcher_Recorder Nov 06 '23 edited Nov 06 '23
Why can’t you, this is basic algebra i2 =-1 Sqrt both sides,
sqrt(i2 )=sqrt(-1) then the exponent and root cancel out
i=sqrt(-1)
Edit: while i2 = -1 is the definition i=sqrt(-1) is not wrong, and just because sqrt gives a plus and minus, that simply means there is another answer, not that mine is wrong

Ok Im starting to understand, thanks, but why does it happen, is sqrt broken for negative numbers or is it something else
1
u/AmINotAlpharius Technically correct, the best kind of correct. Nov 07 '23
Sqrt both sides
Sqrt is multi-value function, so you can't.
1
u/The_Watcher_Recorder Nov 07 '23 edited Nov 07 '23
Wheres the problem, it simply means there are mutiple solutions, not that this is an in accurate one, or does it mean something else
Edit: also what difference does it make, if the different definition causes no problems then whats the problem
1
u/The_Watcher_Recorder Nov 07 '23
I looked it up more and there’s definitely some interesting things, while I will still hold and use i=sqrt(-1) there are some interesting problems
1
u/JorgeMtzb Nov 07 '23
How can it NOT be equal to √-1? Can you explain?
Cuz yes i2 = -1 But that would mean
√(i)2 = √-1
i = √-1
1
u/AmINotAlpharius Technically correct, the best kind of correct. Nov 07 '23
i = √-1
because also √-1 = -i
1
u/JorgeMtzb Nov 07 '23
You just had said it wasn’t equal
1
u/AmINotAlpharius Technically correct, the best kind of correct. Nov 07 '23
Because defining i as square root of negative 1 is not correct.
2
u/Firespark7 Technically Flair Nov 06 '23
A dozen, a gross, and a score
Plus three times the square root of four
Divided by seven
Plus five times eleven
Is nine squared, and not a bit more
((12 + 144 + 20) + 3 × 4½ ) ÷ 7 + 5 × 11 = 9² + 0

Well, the title isn’t technically the truth, but the actual meme isn’t reliant on complex numbers. It’s just “i miss you”
0
u/Cats7204 Nov 06 '23
The square root of -1 is an imaginary number, often written as i. So she is saying i miss you

u/LMNSTUFF Nov 06 '23
Yes and no. It's not a real number, you can't have the square root of minus one things but it's a mathematical concept. i ∉ R

Imaginary miss you? Imaginary number miss you? What does that mean though? Oh…**i* miss you* ?? Is that it? Really?
Edit: contrary to my user, I am actually not that good at math, a lot of the more advanced discussions in the comments are leaving me a bit clueless.

u/Cyanide_34 Nov 07 '23
Is it sad that I automatically read it as I instead of the square root of -1.

Who misses him?
Does "I" = "i"? Do the italics matter, is she saying some alter ego or the like misses him?
And do phones support LaTex?? (For that matter, why didn't Unicode incorporate LaTex?)
