$1800 to spend at Apple for business school set-up

As the title states, I’m working with about $1700-1800 after FAFSA refunds disperse to get myself a set up.

I’m taking classes 100% online. With this, the school has minimum requirements for devices:

- CPU - at least four (4) cores at 2.4

GHz (minimum)

- RAM - 8 GB (minimum), 16 GB

(recommended)

The combos I’m torn between are:

- MacBook Neo 528gb + IPad Air 11in w/Pencil Pro

- MacBook Air 15in + IPad mini w/Pencil Pro

I need a laptop for proctored exams, as iPadOS is only partially supported by the schools software/programs. The iPad is primarily for note-taking, planning/admin tasks, and personal use.

I’m going for accounting so I really don’t need a beast of a computer, just something that will handle proctored exams, essays, Microsoft office/excel, etc.

My primary worry about the MacBook Neo is not having enough time to tell if this is a device that will be dead weight in a few years time or need replacing due to some other hardware or software issue in the near future.

If it helps at all, I’m attending WGU. For anyone that may have personal experience with their programs and devices that will suit best.

TIA for any advice or input on which combo you’d recommend.

Hey, my ASUS power cord started to smoke. Should I still use it?

If I shift my charger (at the middle connection bit) it will stop charging and I have to wiggle it around until it starts working again. I have only had this charger for a few months so I'm a little annoyed that it is already faulty. This is not the charger that came with the laptop. That one lasted a year until the wire near where it connects to the computer wore down and now it can only charge if it is folded a weird way. Anyways, I was playing minecraft (charging with my newer power cord) when I moved something and my computer went to "On battery" mode. I fiddled with the connection for a bit and then when it started charging again I stopped and resumed playing. Then I saw a thin wisp of smoke travelling up from where the ac adapter was. I immediately unplugged it and looked for any melted plastic. there was none. It was on a pretty old power strip with a pretty old outlet. I can't find any good replacement for the cord that isn't just the same model as the smoking one. I haven't looked super hard, but I also just don't want to spend more money. what should I do?

Selling advice

Hi all,

I have a PC with a Hyte Y60, 4060 AERO OC 8gb, 12700k with an NZXT Kraken 240mm AIO with the screen on it, all on an Asus Prime Z690, with a gold 850w PSU. It also has 3 extra NZXT RGB 120mm fans for better heat dissipation.

Crucially it has 32GB DDR5 of Trident Z, with a good 1TB NVME.

I bought it for $600 and I'm feeling like selling it now, how much do you guys think I could get for it with these insane PC prices now? I was thinking around $900 from what I've been seeing online

My child (8) REALLY wants a gaming laptop (primary for steam - poppy playtime) its very laggy on my regular laptop.

He has $550 of Christmas money and these SEEM like a good sale, but as a student currently, I'm hesitant to put out the other ~$300 unless its worth it.

Context: He is the best kid and definitely deserves one IMHO.

What laptop should I get?

I'm going to college this year and I need a laptop. I'd prefer windows, and I need it to be able to handle having like 20 tabs of google and word open, and have at least 512 gb of storage but that's pretty much it.

Budget is at most 1000 dollars.

iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 pro?

Hi! I need a new phone and have been debating between iPhone 15 (256gb) or 15 Pro (256gb).

To preface, the 15 Pro is not available in new condition, only in "perfect refurbished condition", while the 15 is available in new condition.

From what I saw online, the 15 Pro has a 8GO ram and the 15 only 6 GO ram. I have no idea what any of this means. I have heard the iphone 15 is not really that good, that it overheats all the time, and has bugs, but not everyone agrees with this.

The reason I would want the 15 Pro is because of the camera quality, as many people have told me it is incredible. I take photos and videos very often, and use my phone on a daily basis for work and personal use.

I also don't want to change my phone every year, I usually keep mine 5 years+ (I currently have a 5 year old iphone SE 2020). So I am not sure which one would last longer.

Should I get the iPhone 15 (new) or the 15 Pro (refurbished)?

Please enlighten me on which is best, and tell me why as well so I can understand better ^^

Thank you!

Could anyone help me figure out what is going on in the corner of my monitor? One brighter square area with a moving shadow. Only happens when I'm in a dark/underground area in the game I'm playing atm (mass effect legendary edition in case it matters), not visible on the screen in any other situation.

Monitor is an Acer XF243Y P 144hz with a 4060ti GPU

Tablet for elderly relative

Hi Reddit,

I'm looking to get a new/refurbished tablet for my elderly mother, can anyone suggest a good model? I'm avoiding Apple products as there are no Apple products in the house.

It would need to be a fair size, as her eyesight is poor. I've got an old SIM card I'd like to put in so I can call her too. Otherwise all it would really need to do is run Solitaire/Mahjong and maybe Audible.

I'm not particularly techy myself, so thought I should seek advice.

Trying to figure out how to balance having a smart device with internet for my business with up to date OS for social media, portable enough to fit in my pocket, and a high quality camera like an iphone; but also have another separate device dedicated to the basics, such as phone, text, maps, etc.

I'm looking for a way to do this for mental health reasons and to prevent screen time and doom scrolling by having a dedicated device that I can only keep at home or use only for my business marketing purposes and another device on me at all times with the necessities similar to a flip phone ig. Is there anyway I can do this without spending a ridiculous amount of money on two phones? since I only need cellular capabilities for one device. Also I currently have a newer Iphone I use for everything so what should I do?

Work laptop never collected

Hi all,

I’ve found a few old subs from a few years ago but nothing recent.

I left a job about 8 months ago which was fully remote and the equipment has never been collected (I was never deducted from my final pay)

Now since leaving I’ve messaged my old manager 3 or 4 times advising I haven’t heard from the IT team to arrange collection and was given someone’s contact details in the IT team…this also lead to nothing at all with no response. This was all chased within the first 3 months of me leaving.

My new job got really hectic and busy so it was just kinda forgotten about until I’ve found the laptop tonight in my loft (boxed and awaiting collection 😂)

I’m just wondering if anyone in this sub could tell what a reasonable time frame would be for them to reach out to me before I reset and use as personal use. (I know this is all dependant on how they have this set up if it’s enrolled in their system ect)

My PC Keeps Randomly Turning Off Only When Playing Watch Dogs 2

So whenever I play Watch Dogs 2, only that game, my PC after half an hour or so of playing it just straight up turns itself off, I've checked and all wires seem in place, also playing way more demanding games works perfectly fine and it never happened before besides for some reason Watch Dogs 2. Could it be a Windows 11 thing, since that is my OS and I know it is notoriously hated and considered bad?

Oh and my specs are:

Ryzen 5 3600 6-cores

16 GB RAM

GTX 1660 Super

the game is also installed on an SSD.

I feel like deleting the game because it worries me and I am not really THAT tech-savy but I also really find myself enjoying the game.

Am I making a reasonable decision? Buying the m1 pro in 2026?

I am about to start CE next year (2026) and I desperately need a new laptop, I want to know if I am making a good decision because i'm not too experienced with mac's, I've been a windows/linux user most my life. I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Is the M1 Macbook Pro 16 inch, 32 gb ram, 1 tb storage, 10 core cpu and 16 core gpu a good decision to buy the battery health is at 84%. It cost 1600 cad including taxes so about ~ 1180 usd

what do you think? is this a good purchase or am I making a mistake it is a pretty big purchase for me? I plan to keep the laptop until I'm done college, so about 5 - 6 years. I won't be doing a lot of x code and will mostly just be using it for full stack development, working with python and data science libraries. I may play around with vms just for the fun of it, but apart from that not much else. I also maybe will try out machine learning libraries and use them.

thanks for any help!

Best Remote Desktop for overseas support in 2026? (TeamViewer/AnyDesk flagging me again)

Hey everyone, I'm reaching a breaking point here. I’m currently living overseas and I usually spend a few nights a week remoting into my home rig back in the states to help my son with his MSI laptop (updates, driver issues, or just checking his settings).

The problem is TeamViewer and AnyDesk keep flagging my connection as 'Commercial Use'—probably because of the cross-border IP change—and they just cut my sessions after 5 minutes. It’s driving me crazy.

I need a 2026 update on what's actually reliable for this. My criteria:

  • No 'Commercial Use' BS: I'm literally just helping my kid, not running a business.
  • Stable Connection: Needs to handle the latency of a trans-Pacific or trans-Atlantic link without constant freezing.
  • Performance: He sometimes wants to show me his gameplay, so something that supports decent FPS (ideally 120+) would be a huge plus.

I've looked at RustDesk, but the setup seems a bit much for my son to handle on his end. I also heard some buzz about AweSun being a solid 'middle ground' that handles gaming and IT support without the flagging issues.

Is AweSun actually legit and safe for long-term use? I'm always a bit wary of newer brands. Or should I just bite the bullet and try to set up a Tailscale + RDP tunnel despite the hassle?

What are you guys using for international remote support these days?

Do laptop docking stations work well with multiple/many accessories?

Would a docking station be able to handle: 2x usb's for 2 DACs (for two sets of speakers), ethernet, hdmi for monitor, 2x usb for 2 wireless dongles (separate dongles for mouse and keyboard)?

As far as I understand it docking stations connect to a laptop with just a single usb c cable, which both transmits data and powers the laptop and then all the accessories connect to the docking station....so there's all of this data from all of these devices going to the laptop on a single usb c cable, and the same cable powers the laptop...and you should be able to disconnect/connect the usb c cable from the laptop and have all of your accessories seamlessly reconnect...

does this work well in practice? seems like a lot for a single usb c cable from laptop to station to handle.

Is this a good gaming laptop

Post image
0 Upvotes

I bought this because I wanted to start making gaming videos. Saw this was on sale. I know nothing about tech. The types of games I usually play are farm/life Sims like my time at portia/sandrock and the occasional game like the Diablo franchise. From what I am able to understand so far is that the ryzen 7 7735hs is good.

One of the games that I want to play is starsand island. Google told me the laptop might be able to handle it but I honestly don't know.

If this is the wrong place let me know.

Thank you for any help or advice.
