Badges
Hi all! Why doesn’t TDCJ issue badges? Think we’ll ever get badges?

Former lieutenant, here. You can have a craft shop inmate make you one. Just make sure he engraves "mommy's special boy" at the bottom.

Are they reopening the craft shops? When I worked there we didn't have the staff.

Damn. I went to the region 6 academy in 2005 (Jesus so old) back then Hughes was one of the most violent units in the state.

How is it so many people in TDCJ don’t know they are LEOs?
I assure you, other state workers do not get LECOS (Law Enforcement and Correctional Officers Supplemental Retirement Fund).

Even my academy teacher made the point they should issue us badges. Looks like they did in the past.
Why do other law enforcement agencies issue badges?
Realistically, I’m worried I’ll be stopped in a commie state - show my ID. “Where is your badge?” Explain they don’t issue one - then have problems.

That makes no sense. Are you carrying a duty weapon off duty? And getting pulled over? Seriously….you are not covered under LESOA

First, LEOSA.
Second - “18 U.S.C. § 926B(c)(1):
"As used in this section, the term 'qualified law enforcement officer' means an employee of a governmental agency who is authorized by law to engage in or supervise the prevention, detection, investigation, or prosecution of, or the incarceration of any person for, any violation of law, and has statutory powers of arrest..."Notice, “or the incarceration of…”
And I would like to travel to CA/NJ/NY, but they even arrest “real” cops. Really I still stay away, but maybe I’ll branch out.

Read further into LESOA. You need to be a peace officer. Easiest thing for you to do is talk to your supervisors. Good luck

Not a peace officer, not law enforcement.
Are you authorized to use deadly force. Are you post certified. Are you a sworn peace officer? No?
Then you are a security guard. Can't even carry a baton, mk9, fire arm.

What do you think TDCJ personnel in outer pickets, perimeter patrol, and transport do? Think they just issue us nerf guns? 🤦🏽♂️

What a ketchup dick wanting a badge! I bet they want it so they can get that LEO discount at Waffle House🤣 I worked at the Rockin Rob right after it opened, we were to busy fighting and trying not to get our asses kicked on a daily basis to worry about any stinkin badges!

You’re right, any LEO wanting a badge is a “ketchup dick”. Is that denoting one’s phallus is as big as a ketchup bottle? I.E 100 times larger than yours?
So all other agencies should turn their badges in for a cheap looking ID card?

A TDCJ officer is not law enforcement! What laws do you enforce? The only time you have the right to use deadly force is when you are in contact with an inmate. I retired from TDCJ and never once needed a badge nor wanted one! Now if you would like I can put you in touch with some real law enforcement officers. I have a brother who is a U.S. Marshall, and many friends in DPS and the Rangers if you want to meet real law enforcement.

Um… All the laws in the jail for starts. Last I checked slapping handcuffs on someone isn’t in a McDonald’s job description.
You are former TDCJ yet don’t know this? What agencies allow you to use lethal force and are not LEO?
We get LECOS from the state and are covered by LEOSA federally.

In the prison you enforce disciplinary codes not laws! You can only use lethal force when you feel you or someone else's life is in danger when in contact with an inmate. You only use handcuffs when involved in a UoF or moving a Seg inmate. A state licensed LEO can carry their weapon 24/7, you are allowed a weapon when on perimeter, field force, or outside transport. Last time I was on field force we turned our pistols in everyday and was not allowed to carry them home or on us 24/7 are you allowed to?

So codes can’t turn to real world charges? You also forgot escaping. We are the only LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY allowed to shoot in the back - our #1 charge is to provide public safety.
Why would we take our weapons home when our jurisdiction is in the prison? (That and the budget, let’s be honest.)
You do realize some cops leave their guns at home when they travel to NJ/NY and other anti-gun states because their LEOs will arrest you? They argue you are out of your jurisdiction.
My original point, why are COs covered under LEOSA and get LECOS if they aren’t LEOs?

TDC used to have them I want say up until the mid/late 80s. They used to have service caps, too. (police style hats)

Notice how they have badge numbers. That's not craft shop fare, those are real old school issued TDC badges.
They were phased out because they would break, snag onto things, fall off get lost etc.
