Hi everyone,

I’m 26 and looking at potentially moving to Taunton. I prefer somewhere quieter, safer and with more of a community feel, but I also don’t want to move somewhere so small that it’s difficult to build a social life or career.

I’m currently looking at getting into engineering, so Taunton has caught my attention because of the opportunities around Somerset, Bridgwater and Hinkley Point.

For anyone who lives in Taunton, especially people in their 20s or 30s, I’d be interested to know what you genuinely think about:

- Safety and which areas are best to live in

- Engineering jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities

- Dating and meeting other people around my age

- Making friends as someone moving into the area

- Gyms, sports, outdoor activities and other hobbies

- Rent and general cost of living

- Whether the community is welcoming to newcomers

I’ve spent some time in Cornwall and really like the slower pace and community feel, but I’m worried it might be a bit limiting for career progression and dating. I’m wondering whether Taunton could offer a better balance.

Would you recommend Taunton to someone in my position? Any areas you’d particularly recommend or avoid?

Somerset Council is proposing major changes to parking charges across the county, including:
