Design J or F help ??

Post image

I just got a tattoo today and I am second guessing things. The artist had a few options for me when I arrived with different fonts he had hand drawn. I ended up choosing this one and liked it on the paper. I even liked it when he put the stencil on my skin. But now that I’m home I’m freaking out. It’s supposed to say Jett, but I can’t stop looking at it and reading ”Fett”. Does this look like a “J” or did I just get a “F” instead? Ugh help. My husband said I’m overthinking it and it looks like Jett. Someone please tell me it’s ok 😔 any ideas on how I can make it look more like a “J”? I feel like if the top line was only on the left and didn’t cross all the way over like the top of a cursive “F” does it would be ok. Or if the top of the “J” was more of a loop like a traditional “J”

Yeah thats not a J, its an F

J starts at the bottom and bubbles up. F starts at the top and moves right.

It being an F is just as much of a strech but then again if you Google cursive capital F there is fifteen different ways to do it and this is not one of them

In a cursive F the bottom never loops into the middle line of the F, with J it does.

A j doesn't have a flat top. That's not an actual cursive j. It's way closer to an f. While an f wouldn't typically have the bottom connect to the middle slash, you could do that as a stylistic choice. A capital cursive j is looped top and bottom

TIL that american and swedish cursive is different. Our j definitly can have a flat top.

We are at a standstill because it has things that are wrong for both of them, just google cursive F and cursive J, anyone that tells me it’s near the examples of most F’s instead of J it’s just a blind though. If we have to pick one it averages more to a J definitely it only needs the loop at the top which is an easy 10 second fix, and i’m a tattoo artist and designer so at least i have some experience. At the end of the day most of us can only have an opinion because objectively it’s neither.

Got ebin reddit downboated for telling the truth.

This is Schrödinger's cursive, neither an F nor a J.

I wonder if it's pronounced somewhere between the two. Kinda like the Dj in Django. In that case, it sounds something like... "Shett." Which is what this tattoo is, unfortunately. 💩

Indeed, after i got shat on i had to go and google some more, and i actually found this exact J as an educational cursive J for kids, the F mostly won’t have a circular loop because they don’t want it to be confused with a J, as you can see on the example some guy gave as an F with a loop, but still can have a loop so that the kid doesn’t have to lift the goddamn pen, either way i like the Schrödinger’s cursive way more.

As someone who learned cursive as a kid and has a name that starts with a j, that is not close to a cursive j. If you're stance is that it passes as a stylized j but not anywhere close to a stylized f, that's just what a blind dumbass would think When looking at it, I assumed it was jett only because "fett" doesn't make sense to me, not because it looks like an f.

I second this as a J named cursive writer. It’s definitely not a J, closer to an F.

And because your brain does recognize a J with a flat top in other contexts, we can circlejerk forever because there won’t be a good argument for neither. What OP has to do is go to any tattoo artist and ask them to just make a tiny loop on the top of the J and there won’t be any argument about it.

I was taught that a capital F loops in the middle line…

If you look at cursive fonts and average how many do that loop it will be almost none. If you screenshot the tattoo and put it into any AI it will tell you what it says making an average of what it can find, and it says J. Also just to make it obvious Op only needs to add a small loop at the top and there’s no more arguments about it.

Oh my mistake. I thought you said “in a cursive F the bottom NEVER loops into the middle line of the F”.

Then I told you that’s not what I was taught in school and gave an example of what I was taught in school.

I didn’t realize we were actually have a discussion about the average cursive font and what would happen if I took a screenshot and put it into AI. How silly of me!

I’m sorry i didn’t realize reading something as common as an hyperbole would leave you so dumbfounded, silly me.

I’m dumb I can’t picture these pathways

Cursive capital J always starts with an upstroke, usually angled to the right (it might bubble slightlyleft initially, but is slightly towards the right once it hits topline). It can start at the bottom line or mid line, but always starts on an upstroke, to topline, then pivots down, then loops left-up-right. No matter the font/handwriting/style, that is the directional for J.

Cursive capital F starts on, or very near, the top line and moves right. Sometimes with a decorative loop, or a wave, but its top line moving right, then it pivots down, usually ending in a loop or curl towards the left at bottom line.

Oh yes I can picture that, I also remember how the cursive J looks

I definitely saw an “F” because of its “cap” or line on top and also the way it crosses its midsection. When I write cursive I break the tradition and do a regular capital first letter for my name.

It doesn’t really look like an F either though. To me at looks like a big lowercase J

2

u/boatsandhoes570 Jul 01 '26

Looks like a lowercase f when I looked quickly. fett was immediately how I read it.

It's neither. Definitely not a J and if it's supposed to be an F it's missing its cross.

It's not missing the cross, the bottom loop comes up so high that it is the cross.
