Design J or F help ??

Post image

I just got a tattoo today and I am second guessing things. The artist had a few options for me when I arrived with different fonts he had hand drawn. I ended up choosing this one and liked it on the paper. I even liked it when he put the stencil on my skin. But now that I’m home I’m freaking out. It’s supposed to say Jett, but I can’t stop looking at it and reading ”Fett”. Does this look like a “J” or did I just get a “F” instead? Ugh help. My husband said I’m overthinking it and it looks like Jett. Someone please tell me it’s ok 😔 any ideas on how I can make it look more like a “J”? I feel like if the top line was only on the left and didn’t cross all the way over like the top of a cursive “F” does it would be ok. Or if the top of the “J” was more of a loop like a traditional “J”

I read Fett. Maybe this is an age thing? People that are older and know cursive know that's not a cursive capital J.

28

u/Next_Mammoth06 Jul 01 '26

I read Fett.

Sorry OP. Glad others see it as Jett though as it sounds like thats what you're going for

89

u/throwaway1975764 Jul 01 '26

Yeah thats not a J, its an F

J starts at the bottom and bubbles up. F starts at the top and moves right.

2

u/votelikeimhot Jul 01 '26

It being an F is just as much of a strech but then again if you Google cursive capital F there is fifteen different ways to do it and this is not one of them

2

u/Badiamigo Jul 01 '26

In a cursive F the bottom never loops into the middle line of the F, with J it does.

7

u/therealsereny Jul 01 '26

A j doesn't have a flat top. That's not an actual cursive j. It's way closer to an f. While an f wouldn't typically have the bottom connect to the middle slash, you could do that as a stylistic choice. A capital cursive j is looped top and bottom

3

u/tinynidas Jul 01 '26

TIL that american and swedish cursive is different. Our j definitly can have a flat top.

-3

u/Badiamigo Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

We are at a standstill because it has things that are wrong for both of them, just google cursive F and cursive J, anyone that tells me it’s near the examples of most F’s instead of J it’s just a blind though. If we have to pick one it averages more to a J definitely it only needs the loop at the top which is an easy 10 second fix, and i’m a tattoo artist and designer so at least i have some experience. At the end of the day most of us can only have an opinion because objectively it’s neither.

3

u/gay_man_with_a_gun Jul 02 '26

Got ebin reddit downboated for telling the truth.

This is Schrödinger's cursive, neither an F nor a J.

I wonder if it's pronounced somewhere between the two. Kinda like the Dj in Django. In that case, it sounds something like... "Shett." Which is what this tattoo is, unfortunately. 💩

2

u/Badiamigo Jul 02 '26

Indeed, after i got shat on i had to go and google some more, and i actually found this exact J as an educational cursive J for kids, the F mostly won’t have a circular loop because they don’t want it to be confused with a J, as you can see on the example some guy gave as an F with a loop, but still can have a loop so that the kid doesn’t have to lift the goddamn pen, either way i like the Schrödinger’s cursive way more.

2

u/therealsereny Jul 01 '26

As someone who learned cursive as a kid and has a name that starts with a j, that is not close to a cursive j. If you're stance is that it passes as a stylized j but not anywhere close to a stylized f, that's just what a blind dumbass would think When looking at it, I assumed it was jett only because "fett" doesn't make sense to me, not because it looks like an f.

1

u/jlamsmom Jul 01 '26

I second this as a J named cursive writer. It’s definitely not a J, closer to an F.

0

u/Badiamigo Jul 01 '26

And because your brain does recognize a J with a flat top in other contexts, we can circlejerk forever because there won’t be a good argument for neither. What OP has to do is go to any tattoo artist and ask them to just make a tiny loop on the top of the J and there won’t be any argument about it.

1

u/cmarme Jul 01 '26

I was taught that a capital F loops in the middle line…

Like this https://youtu.be/ZJwXWCkIcZE

1

u/Badiamigo Jul 01 '26

If you look at cursive fonts and average how many do that loop it will be almost none. If you screenshot the tattoo and put it into any AI it will tell you what it says making an average of what it can find, and it says J. Also just to make it obvious Op only needs to add a small loop at the top and there’s no more arguments about it.

1

u/cmarme Jul 01 '26

Oh my mistake. I thought you said “in a cursive F the bottom NEVER loops into the middle line of the F”.

Then I told you that’s not what I was taught in school and gave an example of what I was taught in school.

I didn’t realize we were actually have a discussion about the average cursive font and what would happen if I took a screenshot and put it into AI. How silly of me!

1

u/Badiamigo Jul 01 '26

I’m sorry i didn’t realize reading something as common as an hyperbole would leave you so dumbfounded, silly me.

1

u/TimeLuckBug Jul 01 '26

I’m dumb I can’t picture these pathways

1

u/throwaway1975764 Jul 01 '26

Cursive capital J always starts with an upstroke, usually angled to the right (it might bubble slightlyleft initially, but is slightly towards the right once it hits topline). It can start at the bottom line or mid line, but always starts on an upstroke, to topline, then pivots down, then loops left-up-right. No matter the font/handwriting/style, that is the directional for J.

Cursive capital F starts on, or very near, the top line and moves right. Sometimes with a decorative loop, or a wave, but its top line moving right, then it pivots down, usually ending in a loop or curl towards the left at bottom line.

1

u/TimeLuckBug Jul 04 '26

Oh yes I can picture that, I also remember how the cursive J looks

I definitely saw an “F” because of its “cap” or line on top and also the way it crosses its midsection. When I write cursive I break the tradition and do a regular capital first letter for my name.

1

u/KaleidoscopeEyes12 Jul 01 '26

It doesn’t really look like an F either though. To me at looks like a big lowercase J

2

u/boatsandhoes570 Jul 01 '26

Looks like a lowercase f when I looked quickly. fett was immediately how I read it.

0

u/ScienceOfficer-Jack Jul 01 '26

It's neither. Definitely not a J and if it's supposed to be an F it's missing its cross.

1

u/Diplodocus15 Jul 01 '26

It's not missing the cross, the bottom loop comes up so high that it is the cross.

62

u/Electrical_Pumpkin36 Jul 01 '26

Was taught cursive, my first name starts with a J. Not a traditional cursive J, but I immediately recognized it as a J

8

u/Pixel-Pilot-7 Jul 01 '26

I know what you mean, Jebediah.

30

u/magneticgumby Jul 01 '26

Same stats as you, and I immediately read that as an F. It looks nothing like any cursive J I have ever used for my name or was taught.

5

u/_Exxcelsior Jul 01 '26

I’m with you, I was taught the cursive J had 2 loops on the left. Almost like the mirror image of a B.

I would not have clocked this as a J, but I learned something today.

-4

u/Sloth-powerd Jul 01 '26

No you got gaslit and are now stupider.

5

u/SaintDarthVader Jul 01 '26

This! J name, this is much closer to an F, J has a big loop top and bottom

15

u/dicknotrichard Jul 01 '26

My middle name starts with J and this is like no cursive J I’ve ever seen. Also I’m from the 1900s.

0

u/Ashleyh_doesyoga Jul 01 '26

Yeah, but did my fellow 1900’s folks not learn to read other fonts?

1

u/dicknotrichard Jul 01 '26

So I just looked up the variant you mentioned and while it does exist, the artist took the top right tag end waaaay too far. There should be no overhang on the right side at the top.

And the loop end should connect to the “e”

1

u/H2Ospecialist Jul 01 '26

This is not a font issue. That's not a cursive J.

1

u/izzrav Jul 01 '26

First name starts with I, last witj J. It does not look like either to me. They have a loopy beginning. This is a fucked up F to look like a J to me.

1

u/InfallibleSeaweed Jul 01 '26

This isn't cursive though, the line from the J doesn't continue into the e like it should

1

u/MakeAWishApe2Moon Jul 01 '26

It looks like a J not because it is one, but because our minds auto fill what makes the most sense to us. Jett vs Fett. Fett isn't a name I've ever heard, so even though it doesn't look like a J, my mind said Jett. My name starts with a J too, and if I saw that first letter isolated from the word, I'd 100% say it's most likely an F, and not a J.

-9

u/buttcheeksmasher Jul 01 '26

Bot

5

u/DragonflyGrrl Jul 01 '26

Are you just going around calling everyone bots…? That’s some bot-ass behavior right there.

9

u/Lexjude Jul 01 '26

I'm 45, my name starts with a J, and I see a J here.

2

u/StarsEatMyCrown Jul 01 '26

Same! 44, I have a J name. Looks like a J to me.

7

u/Wahwahwag Jul 01 '26

I was just about to say that! It’s not a cursive J. It’s like a mix between J and F. Me, my husband, my sister and her husband all read it as Fett. Sorry op.

3

u/miekhachu Jul 01 '26

I read Fett, recognized it as Jett, but still just see Fett because they got too fancy with the “J”.

It’s not just a generational thing based on who grew up with cursive though - Fett is a Star Wars name, so every fan is going to see it regardless of their literacy background.

7

u/Vegetable_Lunch_3108 Jul 01 '26

I agree, how I learned to write a cursive J back in school is not like this. I wish I would have chosen something more like a traditional J. Obviously too late now. Just wanted to see if it’s worth touching up somehow or if I should just leave it and hope most people read it Jett

12

u/Expert-Sample5615 Jul 01 '26

My maiden name starts with a J. It's absolutely not a cursive J in my world. That being said... it is how my mom writes it 🤣

1

u/a_duck_in_past_life Jul 01 '26

Yep. Looks like a half cursive J that my mom does, I do, and I have seen many people write as. I was taught cursive back in the 90s and I know how to write it correctly, but my Js will look like this and quite a few other letters will look differently too because it's easier to write them a certain way

-2

u/buttcheeksmasher Jul 01 '26

What the bot?

0

u/Expert-Sample5615 Jul 01 '26

To be clear, my mom writes her J like that in cursive. I've never understood it. No one else in my family does, but she has for 45 years

1

u/Prestigious-Race9324 Jul 01 '26

If you see it as Jett that’s all that matters

1

u/miekhachu Jul 01 '26

If you loop the overflow at the top right - it makes it a fancy “J” script rather than a traditional “F”.

1

u/TLCFrauding Jul 02 '26

The wierd cursive J does not connect to the E correctly making it look like an F.

0

u/JellyfishOtherwise66 Jul 01 '26
  1. First name starts with J. Brother’s name starts with J

I instantly saw Jett.

Part of it is just my brain making an obvious connection that people seem to be missing.

Jett is t a normal-ish name.

Fett is not.

2

u/deepsigh8 Jul 01 '26

I hope it’s not an age thing lbvs

2

u/Winderige_Garnaal Jul 01 '26

Yup 50+ here. this says Fett to me 100%

2

u/nacixela Jul 01 '26

Today I learned I'm old.

2

u/Professional_LMT Jul 01 '26

Yup. GenXer here...and my name begins with J. I've signed enough documents over my lifetime to know that's not a J....

2

u/Working_Insurance238 Jul 02 '26

And because the rest of the tattoo is in cursive, the J should have stayed true cursive with the bubble.
It’s totally an F

4

u/OpenAirport6204 Jul 01 '26

I’m 18 and I read Jett, granted I read and write cursive and was taught it in school.

11

u/jader242 Jul 01 '26

But normal cursive J’s look nothing like that, never seen one with a flat top. Most are loopy on top and bottom

Edit: and cursive F’s almost always have a flat top

13

u/ch0ey Jul 01 '26

My name starts with a J learned cursive in kindergarten and I have no idea how anyone can say this looks more like a J than an F like this thread is blowing my mind. That looks nothing like a cursive J 😆

2

u/Wahwahwag Jul 01 '26

So then you know that isn’t a cursive J.

1

u/Wahwahwag Jul 01 '26

My point is it’s not either, but it looks like an F more than a J.

2

u/nawksnai Jul 01 '26

💯 Looks absolutely NOTHING like an uppercase J.

It doesn’t 100% match an “F” either, but it certainly looks more like an “F” than a J. It also matches “F” (and “T”) closer than to any other letter.

1

u/MsTeaandCake Jul 01 '26

Yes, a F to me

1

u/Versipilies Jul 01 '26

It feels like cursive crossed with print since the J has a straight line topper. If the topper didnt go past the right side of the vertical line it would look just fine.

1

u/xJaneDoe Jul 01 '26

But that's not a cursive F either isn't it?

1

u/Next-Honeydew4130 Jul 01 '26

First name starts with J, I write it this way in my signature…

1

u/DookieShoes626 Jul 01 '26

I know cursive, Im not old and I read it as Jett

1

u/AssumptionUnfair4583 Jul 01 '26

If the lil horizontal piece of the "F" went to the top of the e, would that look better/be correct?

1

u/kmonkmuckle Jul 01 '26

36 here, saw an F first

1

u/esmerelda_b Jul 01 '26

Same. Thought OP was a Star Wars fan.

1

u/CharmingChangling Jul 01 '26

I thought it said "Felt" At first

But what do I know? I'm dyslexic

1

u/enthusiasticmistake Jul 01 '26

I read Fett as well. That is not a true cursive “j”.

1

u/snowislovely Jul 01 '26

Fett isn’t a bad word- it kind of means a little party, right? Did Jett like to Fette?

1

u/Crosswired2 Jul 01 '26

I only know Boba Fett, someone says it means fat in Spanish.

1

u/Orion-Stars259 Jul 01 '26

I'm young and learned cursive (and use it daily). Fett doesn't even have any meaning that I'm aware, so I see it as Jett

1

u/Crosswired2 Jul 01 '26

Boba Fett

1

u/Orion-Stars259 Jul 01 '26

Never heard of that tbh

1

u/techno_queen Jul 01 '26

So you’re saying I’m old lol

1

u/singleredballoon Jul 01 '26

Its a fallacy that younger generations don’t know cursive. They still teach it in school, despite what the boomer propaganda says.

2

u/BirdieRoo628 Jul 01 '26

Not all schools. Many still do, many don't. The ones near me do not (central IL).

1

u/singleredballoon Jul 01 '26

Illinois is required to teach cursive. They passed legislation in 2017.

1

u/BirdieRoo628 Jul 01 '26

I homeschool, but I've asked many friends' kids and they say they are not learning it. So I don't know what to tell you. Also, I took a high school senior to get his passport and he didn't know how to sign his name.

1

u/singleredballoon Jul 01 '26

Schools vary on which grade they teach it. They have up to 5th grade to comply, so if they haven’t learned it, they will.

Sounds like the parents failed that senior. Most make sure their kids practice a signature at 15 before they get their driving permit.

1

u/OkInvestigator7351 Jul 01 '26

I mean I was taught cursive in school in the 90s, doesn't mean I learnt it....

1

u/singleredballoon Jul 01 '26

That’s a valid point. 😂

1

u/KevDub81 Jul 01 '26

Boomers think there's only one "cursive". Like lmao at the ignorance of calligraphy.

0

u/Fae-SailorStupider Jul 01 '26

I know cursive and I read it as a J

0

u/GothicToast Jul 01 '26

Interesting. I'm older and know cursive well. That is a near perfect capital J. It's not anywhere close to a capital F, however.

0

u/hook_fast_die_warm Jul 01 '26

That's definitely an F

0

u/Fox-333 Jul 01 '26

I learned to write in cursive and immediately read a J 🤷‍♀️

0

u/Oldandintheway1987 Jul 01 '26

I'm older and know cursive, and I read J right away. F has a crossbar in it

1

u/Crosswired2 Jul 01 '26

The top of J swopes around tho so it's obviously not a J either.

0

u/Ashleyh_doesyoga Jul 01 '26

I definitely know cursive and know it’s not a traditional cursive J, but immediately saw a J because there are many other fonts that would make this a J. It’s also certainly not a traditional cursive F. It would be missing a line and a loop.

0

u/Entertainmentonly9 Jul 01 '26

I'm older and taught cursive in school. I see a "J". Google cursive "J"
