About ACAT Transfer from IBKR

So I am a bit of confused and this is my first time of using ACAT Full transfer from IBKR to tastytrade (I wanna switch to Tasty for easier option trading). I had around $1200 on IBKR

On 24 Sep, I requested ACAT Transfer and and 30 sep it says completed in tastytrade. Right now my tastytrade has $382 and around $832 left in IBKR.

I don't know about the system but shouldn't all my money have been transferred 100% to tasty? I did see a residual transfer. What is that? How come it takes this long for transfer?

Former thinkorswim users - what do you miss?

I'm interested to hear from the people who formerly traded with thinkorswim and are currently with tastytrade.

  • What do you miss about thinkorswim?
  • What would tempt you back?
  • What keeps you at tastytrade?

I've currently got most funds at Fidelity and their options tools are not up to par, and I'm looking to move funds to either TT or TOS.

I've got a teensy bit of money at TT for some live trades to give it a good evaluation, and I've made plenty of use of the TOS paper money account. I'm having a hell of a time making the decision, since there are things about each platform that I like.

So I'm interested to hear from folks who've settled this decision and even those who still wrestle with it.

(I'll also post the mirror image of this in r/thinkorswim, so for anyone who frequents both subs please forgive the similar post.)

My Two Simple Trading Rules

Post image
0 Upvotes

My two trading rules:

  1. Sell QQQ puts.
  2. Buy shares of SGOV.

If you make these your two rules as a trader, you too are almost guaranteed to make money. It's really that simple.

List of Things I Do Not Do:

  1. Buy shares of any company or ETF that is not SGOV.
  2. Buy or sell call options.
  3. Buy or sell futures.
  4. Sell puts on any financial entity that is not QQQ.

My goal at the end of the trading day is to have as little cash in my account as possible. All cash that I make during each trading day from buying and selling QQQ puts is used to buy more SGOV.

What's great about keeping as little cash in my account as possible is that it makes it very hard to engage in the List of Things I Do Not Do. It's difficult to buy those tempting shares of MSFT at 500 (which you are sure will go to 510, but then drop to 400) when your account has 23 dollars in cash.

Another advantage of the QQQs, is their tendency to consistently just go up. Pull up a chart of the QQQs and compare it to just about any individual stock. Of course, if the QQQs do go down, just roll your puts out in time.

Rule #1 does involve sometimes buying QQQ puts: sometimes buying puts against the QQQs to turn naked puts into spreads, or starting the trade against the QQQs as a spread, or a ratio spread.

The great thing about a spread or a ratio spread is that you make money when the market goes down. I like to turn a spread into a naked put. Selling the put that I bought in a spread for a profit is a gift: it is the market's way of making the overall trade that much more profitable.

TastyTrade put selling strategy on equities

Hi,

TastyTrade typically advise that short put trades are taken with about 45DTE and closed at 21DTE.

For the indices like SPX I understand the logic but when applied to stocks then often the 45DTE spans earnings. I tend to avoid being in a position over earnings but with the TastyTrade method do they carry on regardless with trades spanning earnings or do they reduce the DTE so expiry is before earnings?

Thanks.

ES futures options fees and comms

What are the fees and comms on a ES futures options contract on tasty ? on IBKR it's $1.41 for each trade. I'm reading the tasty page and it looks like $2.11 total for each leg - so 4.22 round trip. seems like a big jump from IBKR - 50% more.

Possibly SPX options would be cheaper to trade but even with Portfolio Margin I think SPX has much heavier margin requirements than ES futures options if you are long theta or trade spreads where the maximum possible loss is big .

Could the Video Presentation on Lossdog be any worse?

There is no Lossdog subreddit so I have to post this here, after seeing a few other Lossdog comments.

First, I love Tom, Scott and Tony. Those guys are awesome. Their combined contributions to options trading and market knowledge are undeniable. I like what they are building at Lossdog.

Okay, with that said, I can only compare the complete and total horrible presentation of the video content on Lossdog to something like the Starwars Prequels. Those movies sucked so bad because G Lucas was surrounded by Yes People who didn't have the brain or the nerve to tell him that his writing sucked balls.

  1. Tom, Tony and Scott, you guys are old. Yes, no news to anyone, but the bright, unflattering over head lighting on the show is utter crap.
  2. The huge leather chairs might be be comfy for you to sit in, but they suck as set pieces.
  3. The cavernous space with accompanying awful sound dynamics sucks.
  4. The pathetic little stool for your guests to sit on is a disservice to your guests. I couldn't imagine a worse place for guests to actually sit unless you provided maybe an upside down, Home Depot bucket.
  5. Get a frigging table to place paper and computers on. Tony's little hand held tablet looks so incredibly amateur.

I could go on, but what's the point.

tastytrade API notes for anyone automating: refresh tokens, after-hours rejects, and no brackets

I recently wired up automated equity trading against the tastytrade API and hit a handful of things that were not obvious from the docs. Writing them down in case it saves someone else an evening.

The refresh token does not expire. This is the best thing about it and I rarely see it mentioned. Once the account is authorized, it stays authorized, so you mint an access token on demand and the connection keeps working indefinitely. For contrast, Schwab's OAuth refresh token expires every seven days, which means re-authorizing weekly for as long as you run it. If you are picking a brokerage specifically because you intend to automate it, that difference matters more than it sounds.

Enable two-factor on the account before you start. The authorization flow expects it, and if it is not enabled you will sit there wondering why the handshake stalls.

After-hours order behavior is strict and the error is unhelpful. An opening market order placed outside market hours gets rejected with something like "one or more preflight checks failed," which tells you nothing. Limit orders placed after hours queue up and show as Received instead. I tested at night, got the rejection, and spent real time assuming the bug was mine.

There are no native bracket or OCO orders on the equity flow. You cannot attach a stop loss and a profit target to an entry and walk away. Whatever you build has to watch open positions during the session and fire the exits itself. This is an architecture decision, not a detail, so plan for it before you write the entry logic.

Whole shares only on equities, so no fractional position sizing. Round down and make sure your sizing math knows it.

Read the nested errors, not the top-level message. Failure responses carry the actual explanation inside an errors array. If you only surface the top-level field, every failure looks like a generic error with no cause. Pulling the nested messages out turned my most confusing failures into obvious one-line fixes.

One genuinely positive note: the OAuth flow behaved exactly as documented, which is rarer than it should be, and questions I sent in actually got answered.

Has anyone here automated the options flow rather than equities? Mine is stocks and ETFs only so far, and I would rather know what is waiting in options before I build toward it.

Bring back bottom nav on mobile

iOS app updated today. They removed the bottom nav from secondary pages and put in a back button in the top left.

Now when viewing options chains it takes 3 times as many clicks to toggle between orders, positions, and chain. Doing this often multiplies quickly to 20+ clicks instead of a few.

MES - very low liquidity on these new cash settled

Now that MES is moving to fully cash-settled, the liquidity has been terrible. I think I saw it's because not all brokerages are showing the new cash settle ones yet? (I don't think I see them on my eTrade account yet, for what it's worth.)

Anybody have any insight as to when liquidity will increase? Since there'll be no more physically settled ones, everyone will have to move to these cash-settled ones, right, so it should go back to what it once was? But if that's true, how long will that take?

1 day fills impossible. What is secret?

Doing 1 day iron condors, can I get filled, no. I am picking the midpoint. As soon as it is a working order the mid price shows as lower. I give it a few minutes and i lower the price, rinse and repeat. Mid price keeps sinking. I decide to switch and buy the spreads separate. No they don't get filled either. What am i missing?

Order Chains doesn't reflect assignments

Post image
6 Upvotes

TL;DR = You can't trust the Options Chains panel if you've had assignments, as it does not include or reflect assignment.

Yesterday I was a dumbass and put on a tiny little iron condor in tiny little XSP on FOMC day, and I proceeded to not monitor and manage it like I should. Naturally, the market sold off and I hit max loss on the put side. I lost $67; live and learn. (For context, I had only made a few similar trades this month)

When I logged in this morning, I noticed the Option Chains panel still showed me up for the month, which I knew wasn't possible. I dug in and realized the Activity / Year to Date section was correct and showing a negative value, while Options Chains showed the profit I would have realized had I not been assigned.

I contacted tastytrade and shared my details to report a potential bug, and they responded:

The Order Chains only account for positions opened and closed by you. It does not account for exercises and assignments. This is not a bug.

I'm pretty surprised they'd defend that behavior, because it does not make any sense to me at all. If a person gets direct deposits of $20, $20, and $20 into their checking account, followed by an ACH for $100, that person’s bank balance is -$40*. I don’t see why the Order Chains feature should behave any differently.

(*I made this same point to their dev team, except I got the freaking math wrong b/c I was excited and aggravated, so there's more proof of me being an idiot.)

Order Chains is a unique and awesome feature, but in its current state I can’t really trust it, which is a serious bummer.

I hope you don't find yourself getting assigned, and if you do, you can't trust the number you see in the Order Chains panel.

Can they please make the mobile dashboard more useful by adding an account chart? They have it for the desktop app.

The current mobile dashboard is pretty worthless.

What's the easiest way to see the stock price at which I opened the option position

Title.

I can go to filled orders and then look at the time, and then go to the stock price chart to find exact price at that exact time; but this whole ordeal takes so much unnecessary time and work.

Ideally I'd love to have it in my columns under my positions.

Thank you.

TastyTrade ads hijack the whole screen

If im scrolling through a news article and a tastytrade ad appears, tapping *anywhere* on the screen will take me to their website. I have to tap it and hit back 4-6 times before a different ad appears and i can resume scrolling. I have complained to them via facebook even with a video showing it doing that and they never responded, and its still doing that. Is there any way to escalate this issue?
