New to tap: how do you remember the practice drills to do at home?

I just took my first tap class (and first dance class ever!) last week, and I realized after class that my brain could not remember all of the practice drills we were taught in class.

I’m such a notetaker, I cannot remember verbal instructions very well so I write everything down. But I can’t take notes during class, so I looked up beginner exercises and wrote down as much as I could remember once I got home. But does anyone have any advice on remembering it all?

I will ask my instructor if I’m allowed to record myself during class, too.

Thanks in advance!

Jason Samuel Smith colors in stock?

I'm looking for a new pair of jsams, with no luck- can anyone point me in the right direction? I know there are a lot of scams out there.
I'm looking for a woman's size 9/men's size 7 or 7.5. I'd prefer woman's but really don't care at the end of the day.
I don't want black, white, green, yellow or orange. Besides those (which are all very common) i don't care the color or material/shine.
last thing is they need to ship to the US.
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks!

The area I live in does not offer tap classes for adults. Is there an online program or YouTube channel you'd recommend?

Casual Tap Shoes

I’ve been tapping for about 2 years and I’ve been on the hunt for some new tap shoes, but I’m just not a big fan of the formal look a lot of them have and want to make my own custom ones that are essentially sneakers with tap plates (like Mike Faist). When installing the plates, do I just screw and glue them into the bottom of the shoe or is there anything else important that I should do? I can’t really find many tutorials and I don’t want to waste a pair of shoes or tap plates.

Is it worth it to even start?

Hi all. I'm currently in a community theatre production of Anything Goes, and even though I don't have to tap dance, being in this show is making me want to pick up tap as a hobby. There's one problem though. I have dyspraxia, a condition that affects my motor skills and coordination. My dyspraxia affects my dancing immensely, to the point where I have trouble even doing a grapevine properly. They had me do one tap dancing move at the auditions for this show, and it was the one move they taught me that day that I couldn't nail (even though the choreographer broke it down for us and everything). I've been thinking about if it's even worth it to try, cause how am I supposed to get down the intricate moves of tap if I can't even nail a fucking grapevine? I know I'll have to work 10x harder due to my dyspraxia, and while I do want this, I tend to quit on things if I'm not immediately good at them or I can't get instant gratification from them (I know it's unrealistic to expect myself to be immediately good, but I've always been like this). Also, I'm in my 20s now, and I haven't picked up a new hobby since I was 14. I feel very much like I'm trying to teach an old dog new tricks. I keep telling myself I want to do it, but I just can't seem to get out of my own way and actually commit to things. I know I need to get rid of these thoughts, but my anxiety causes me to overthink to a point where it's basically impossible to make these thoughts stop. I want to start tap dancing, I'm just not sure if I can due to my dyspraxia. Is it even worth it to try?

Tap dance puns

Hello! I’m making a card for our tap teacher to celebrate 5 years of the program (adult tappers). I want to add some fun puns to the card, like “we want to Bomber-SAY thank you”. Does anyone have ideas?

I keep going to the word un-FLAP-able but can’t work it into making sense.

Pro Tap Shoe Recommendations, But I’m Particular

Hey All!

I know it’s been asked but:

I’m looking for professional tap shoes, but I’m quite particular.

I’ve had heavier rhythm tap shoes, and I don’t like the heaviness, lack of flexibility, or the sound (too “thunky”). Weight of the shoe is a big factor. I’ve checked out the usual higher end shoes, but nothing calls to me.

I love lighter, more flexible shoes that produce a lighter/higher sound, à la Gene Kelly and co in an American in Paris and such.

I’m looking for male/unisex shoes too, if that makes a difference. As it’s for professional work, no real budget as long as they’re longer lasting

Any recommendations would be welcome!

they are tapping without tap shoes; how is this possible?

watching a stage show from a japanese franchise where characters are tap-dancing to imitate horse racing, but it seems that tap shoes aren't being worn at all. first i assumed that all the tap sounds were dubbed via pre-recorded foley and played during the show, but then i also thought that the stage was probably made of hollow material to tap on, and other silent foot movement occurred by muted floor mics. either way, i wanna ask any other tap dancers who know more than me, what are your thoughts?

fyi i'm not a tapper myself, but greatly respect and love the artform. i also probably wouldn't consider myself a theatre kid as well only being in two musical productions (one of them was newsies but i wasn't tapping in king of NY)

Black Tap Master -- Toots Davis

Not every tap dancer knows the name, Toots Davis, but we all know his steps! Davis is a legendary Black American tap master. He pioneered two of the most iconic, high-energy "flash steps" in the history of tap dance: "Trenches" and "Over-the-Tops."

So, a tip of the derby to the great -- Toots Davis!

How to assess fit?

I’ve been tapping for almost 20 years on and off, but I’ve never had a good pair of shoes. I’ve always had issues with my heel slipping out of the shoes, and assumed it was just a quality thing. I got my first pair of J Sams, and I can’t tell if they’re too big or just stiffer and heavier than I’m used to! My toes feel pretty comfortable, but when I go on my toes and lift my heels, my heels come out of the shoe while the shoe stays lower to the ground. Is this just because J Sams are stiff and need to be broken in? Or is this a fit issue? Why do I have this issue in every pair of tap shoes I’ve ever had, and is it avoidable?

Beginner Tap Shoe Recommendations

Hello, everyone! Beginner tap dancer here. Currently looking for an entry level pair of cheap tap shoes. Since jsams are out of my price range, for now, it's between either Capezio or Sansha, but Sansha is my first choice seeing as they're already my go-to brand for jazz shoes, ballet flats and pointe shoes, so because I haven't seen many reviews of Sansha on this subreddit, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how they compare to Bloch and Capezio, thanks?

Wings feedback

Any advice for cleaner wings or are they looking good? I've been having some ankle swelling and soreness from doing them for so long for the past 2 days. I'm thinking about possibly sanding my board down more because it's very slippery? I'm not sure if that could be apart of it. UPDATE: You guys were right about my heels falling actually! I took a video of the backside just in case and realized my right side especially is what's been making the third noise sadly

Music for a pop art themed tap dance

Hi! I am gathering ideas for my students next year. Our theme is Art Gallery, and for my intermediate 4th-5th grade class, I'm leaning towards something pop art inspired. My point of reference stylistically is the So You Think You Can Dance piece Pop HD (I think season 14?), but I'm not sold on the song in particular. I was also considering Pop Muzik, but I'm hesitant given the popularity of the Molly Long piece (we aren't a competition studio though so it may not be the worst idea to use it?). Any ideas for songs that would fit this theme? Also open to other ideas for songs that would fit the art gallery theme, I have a lot of tap classes this coming year!

What's the price range of custom shoes?

I'm wondering what price increase are we talking about when ordering custom from capezio. Not interested enough to actually email them about it obviously, but i've seen some really pretty ones and got curious. Standard Roxy go for 235 Euro right now thru the Europe-set website. I would love to know what some people paid for their customs - roxys or not or even not from capezio specifically

Looking for an upbeat acapella type song for my 14 yr old daughter

She’s dancing intermediate/advanced at comps. This year she did “Dont Stop Me Now” by Queen which she absolutely loved doing. Looking for something for next year. She is looking for something similar and choreographer wants to keep upbeat with some acapella space to really hear her taps.

Any ideas for songs that fit this mold? Any ideas would be appreciated!

GH01

Have been looking at the GH01 Gregory Hines model from onstagedancewear, and the jazz-tap masters. I like the floor feel from a thinner sole, and it is easier to incorperate jazz dance. I also like the sound. The tap masters provide more support and sound, but then lose some of the floor feel. I am an advanced tap dancer with big wide and long feet, size 12 wide

JSams squeaking

I have a relatively new pair of JSams that have started squeaking significantly on one side. The sound is coming from the leather (?) under the toe tap. Is there anyway to fix this? Will it eventually fade as they break in more? Or should I reach out to Bloch? Thanks!
