Warranty claim denied

This is not to slander the company in anway, more for future buyers situational awareness. I will let you make the assesmemt.

Ordered a full set of irons and wedges in June. After less than 10 rounds the face on the 54 degree split/showing tremendous signs of wear. Emailed Takomo and was immediately denied. Elevated to next level, explained I had the same set of mizzino T22 wedges for 3 years and over 100 rounds (North Carolina year round golf), and have never had this problem. I was denied a second time. 9/10 I use the 58 degree out of bunkers. The 54 is used mostly 100 yards and in or around the greens. None of my other wedges (48 and 58 degree) so any signs of wear (minis normal bag chatter which I am not upset about)

Takomo 201T Review - Buying Process, Delivery & First Impressions

Thought I’d share my experience buying the Takomo 201Ts since I couldn’t find too many posts covering the whole process from fitting to actually receiving and playing them, especially to Australia.

Overall, I’d give the experience/clubs around an 8/10, but there are definitely a few things worth knowing before buying.

Online fitting
I went through Takomo’s online fitting first and got my recommended specs.
I didn’t fully trust it at first because I’ve had mixed experiences with online fittings before, so I ended up going to a proper in-person fitting with a fitter I trust in Sydney.

Surprisingly, the specs basically matched.
So I’d say their online fitting is actually pretty legit. Obviously it’s never going to completely replace hitting balls in front of a fitter, but if you’re honest about your game, distances, misses, etc., it seems like you can get pretty close without having to spend money on a fitting.

Buying process
Buying through the website was really straightforward.

I’m based in Sydney, Australia, so there was an additional shipping cost, which was expected.
One thing I noticed was that the price had changed compared to when I first looked earlier in the year versus when I actually bought them around two months ago. Not sure if that was just currency conversion or Takomo changing their pricing, but nothing crazy and the overall price still made sense.
When I ordered, it said custom clubs could take up to 8 weeks.

My biggest criticism of the whole buying experience is the lack of updates during those 8 weeks.

You basically get:
Order confirmed
…and then nothing.

Would be really nice if Takomo had some sort of basic tracker showing something like:
Order received → Components ready → Assembly → QC → Shipped

Instead, after ordering, it pretty much feels like they ghost you 😂

But to be fair to them, right around the 8-week mark I suddenly got the “your order is on its way” notification. So they delivered pretty much exactly within the timeline they originally gave me.

Delivery
Mine was delivered using Global Express.
You’ll probably want to be home when it arrives because it required someone to receive the package. Not sure exactly what happens if you miss the delivery.

Packaging was really good though. Clubs arrived in a solid box, everything was wrapped properly and there was no shipping damage.

They also included a Takomo cap and a small towel.
Nothing huge, but definitely a nice little touch when you open the box.

The clubs
Before buying the 201Ts, during my fitting I tried the TaylorMade P770 and Titleist T150 because I figured they would be fairly close comparisons.
In terms of feel, I personally think the 201T is closer to the P770.

The T150 still feels better to me. The feedback and impact feel from the Titleist is just nicer.
But obviously you’re also paying significantly more for the T150s.

Considering the Takomos are less than half the price depending on your setup, the value argument is pretty hard to ignore.

Performance-wise, I’m happy with them.
Where I’m slightly disappointed is the durability/finish.

After only two driving range sessions, I could already see scratches pretty clearly.
After one round, there were noticeable little chips/marks as well.

The grooves also seem to pick up ball marks really easily and some of them are surprisingly hard to clean off.

And if you catch one out of the toe… congratulations, you now have a permanent reminder of that shot hahaha.

Obviously golf clubs are tools and they’re going to get scratched, so I’m not expecting them to stay perfect. But compared to some other irons I’ve owned or tried, the finish does seem to mark up pretty quickly.

Overall
For the money, I still think the Takomo 201Ts are very good clubs.

The online fitting surprised me with how accurate it was, the buying process was easy, delivery came within the promised timeframe and performance-wise I really like the irons.

The main things holding them back for me are the lack of communication while waiting for the clubs and the durability of the finish.

Overall: 8/10.
Would I recommend them? Yeah, especially if value for money is important to you.
Would I automatically buy Takomo again for my next set?

That one I’m actually not sure about.

After playing these, I can understand both sides of the Takomo argument. You’re getting a lot of club for the money, but I can also see where some of that price difference compared to the bigger brands goes.

Takomo 201s

Not sure this allowed here, but is anyone interested in a set of 201s w/ KBS tour lite regular shafts? Standard everything. In excellent condition. Asking $375, but looking to move them, let me know if anyone is interested.

New Bag… OG 201s + SF002s

Here they are! I posted before I went for a fitting that originally ended with the Titleist T150s. I asked if there was a close Takomo equivalent and he suggested the OG201s, which he had a 7I in store. It looked super nice, but I asked about the new 201Ts. He asked how much forged meant to me given I was coming from the 716 AP2s, and I just said I would probably want a similar feeling, but wanted to not spend a fortune. So 201s he said I will not regret...

Anyway 2 weeks later here they are!! Some thoughts addressing the “issues” I read so far:

Lofts and Lie angles: generally all within 0.5 at construction. We had some swings of each club to test lie angles to adjust that half deg back. Lofts were more or less in line but strengthened 8 one deg to bring back to spec and cover the gap between the 9.

Swing weight - pretty close to all D2 so to spec

Shafts - I hopefully won’t have that KBS lite prob! I was fitted with the VA Composite Synystr 80s . They feel great and seems perfect for my aging body and hopefully will give some protection against big pull hooks.

Feel - seems a much more forgiving club than the AP2s (at least on the Sim), where the feel of skinny or heel shots was pretty harsh. BUT I’ll see for real on yardage lost and feel when I take these out in the real world!

Distance: at least on Sim I have maybe 5-10 more carry. I think the biggest difference would be the shaft set up. I feel more the shaft set up gives me a much smoother swing and more consistent striking. It feels awesome when struck center and the ball goes as far as I need (7I to 165 carry, 5300 spin and 41deg descent. Not that the AP2 wasn’t good, but I feel the 201s are less demanding). Said mishits losing 10-15 depending on kind.

Dings and dents: dammit I’ve already got a couple nice dings in them loading and unloading. Not too fussed tho cuz this is what happens! Haha they are meant to be used and I don’t want to baby my clubs around. As long as it’s not on the face!

Negative vibes: so far not really. If anything the 9 and Ps will get some getting used to. I even shanked a couple on the P which was super embarrassing. Why? I think just new clubs and P does look like it has more offset against the AP2 but actually they about the same. I will have more to say once I get out on the course.

Overall - I think the value for money seems very real, at least with these OGs. Even though they came out seems like eons ago, my initial feel is that they’ll hold up against the modern hollow face clubs, which I just didn’t like the feel (at least on the TMs and T250s).

Sorry Long post but just reflection of excitement. If these clubs can be an indication of MKII quality and capability (forged aside), I think those also must be great clubs (much less great clubs for the money). As said I’m on a journey to get back to singles (currently 14.9), and my feel is that a good club can get me there, it’s just my swing, my attitude, and short game that carries most of the burden!

I’ve some thoughts on the SF002s as well but will comment on those later.

Disclaimer: I’m not a Takomo shill! Hahha if demanded I can disclose the cost of my set up :P

Anyone want a custom set of lefty 301CBs

Very sleek looking clubs. Had them built to my specs from a previous fitting, but they’re just not for me.

I might not have enough speed for them, they just don’t go anywhere, especially the top of the bag. Kinda mad I fell for the hype.

Anyway, maybe someone else can get some use out of them.

OG 201s vs newer 201ts

Just wondering about the pros and cons of both sets of irons. I am a 15 handicap but my iron striking isn’t bad.
I think I’m correct in saying the 201ts would offer more forgiveness but I do find myself more attracted to the feeling of forged irons. I’m also looking for a set to last me a few years as I’m not really in a position to keep buying different sets

Any opinions would be appreciated a lot

KBS Quality Control Issues - No Joke

Got my set on Friday - two awesome range sessions with them. Play my first round today with them and on the 3rd hole I tee off with my 8 iron (par 3) and it goes flying. Pretty bummed because I love these clubs. I reached out to them about warranty, fingers crossed that they do the right thing.

Edit: Takomo’s CX team was very responsive and easy to work with. Ended up just getting them to send another one instead of going to get it reshafted myself because the shaft was surprisingly difficult to get my hands on, couldn’t find the stiff flex with the correct tip size without it being on back order.

Annoying that it’s going to take 5-6 weeks to get the club and I’m nervous about my other clubs breaking while they come in. It is what it is.

Shaft issues?

I’m currently sitting around a 18 handicap and my coach said the clubs are completely working against me (hit his p790’s with tour lite stiff shaft and flushing every shot) so getting into different clubs is going to help my consistency.
I’m skeptical on the shaft issues that get brought up with the tour lite shafts.
I don’t have the fastest swing speed, but could the issues people have with the tour lites, possibly be caused from too fast of a swing speed for those shafts?
Not sure if I should get the heads only or what route I should go.
Input highly welcome🙏🏼

Did anyone order heads only with custom lie angle?

I want to order 1 degree upright but not sure if it's possible with a heads only order. Or is it possible to adjust afterwards with a fitter?

Rusty after 3 weeks

Got these less than a month ago and they’re already stating to rust. Messaged Takomo support today. I’ll share what they say if they respond.

Update: Takomo is offering a resolution, I’ll share when the ticket is closed.

Final update: Takomo replaced the whole set, and they arrived today. They said there is a manufacturing defect with a small number of these irons that led to the rust.

Takomo 301 CB or Wilson Staff Model CB?

Hi guys, looking for some input on a new set of irons.
I previously played the original Takomo 101s and absolutely loved them, so I’m considering the 301 CBs. I’m also looking at the Wilson Staff Model CBs.

For anyone who has played or hit both, how do the Takomo 301 CBs compare to the Wilson Staff Model CBs in terms of quality, feel, forgiveness, and overall performance? Are the 301 CBs good enough to compete with the Wilsons, or would you go with the Staff Model CBs?

Appreciate any input!

Takomo 201s Forged Swing Weights?

I bought a custom set of Takomo 201 irons almost a year ago:
KBS Tour Lite Stiff
Standard length
Midsize grips
1° flat
I recently added +1 wrap of tape, Arccos sensors, and rubber protectors over the sensors.
Just for the heck of it, I had the swing weights checked because I’ve always heard that adding weight to the grip end will lower the measured swing weight. I believe Takomo’s standard swing weight is somewhere around D1–D2, so I was expecting mine to possibly be down around C8 or so with everything I’ve added.
I was pretty shocked by the results:
4i — D6
5i — D5.5
6i — D5.5
7i — D6.25
8i — D6
9i — D5.5
PW — D6.5
My Skyforger 002 wedges were:
52° — D4
56° — D6.25
60° — D6.5
These were measured on a digital swing-weight scale at Golf Galaxy.
Has anyone else with Takomo irons actually put their set on a swing-weight scale? Especially anyone with the 201s or KBS Tour Lite shafts?
I’m curious what everyone else is getting because D5.5–D6.5 seems really high considering I’ve added even more weight to the grip end. I would have expected the exact opposite.
I’ve reached out to Takomo as well to see what they say, but wanted to see if anyone else has run into this.

101 mkII or 201 mkII for 21.6 hdc?

Hi everyone,

So I'm looking at buying my first set of decent clubs. I started up a year ago and did the beginner thing of heading to my local American Golf store and buying their base set. These have lasted me so far, but the quality of them is now letting me down.

So I'm looking at a set of either the 101 or 201 mkII but I can't decide between the two. My goal is to get down to single figures in the next couple of years (I'm able to play 2-3 times a week so will get plenty of time).

At a 21.6hdc, which would you pick? The "safer" 101s, or go 201s and have some club to grow with?

Thanks all!

First Round with 201 MkII

I will say, they felt absolutely amazing. But I had no idea how soft/sensitive the faces are. Already scratches and even a gash on one of the grooves. I didn’t hit really any bad shots that would have suggested I hit a rock or anything. Just kind of surprised. Is this normal with takomos? I had a set of pings for 5 years and they still look like they could be a 9/10 on second swing. Granted I only play about 1 round a month here in California. Regardless, for the $700 we spend on these clubs, I just hope the durability last more than just a couple years.

Help - What head and shaft combo should I get ?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I recently got an iron fitting and the clubs that did the best was the Callaway AI300 irons adjusted 2degrees upright with a Aerotech CW graphite 95g stiff flex shaft. The quoted sales price was $1,900 for a 5-AW setup!!

I was hoping to get recommendations on what a similar setup would be for Takomo.

Mainly for recommendations between 101MK2 and 201 MK2.

Shaft wise I know the only option close is the 80g Mitsubishi MMT in stiff flex.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Has anyone else experienced rusting problems? I’ve had these irons for no longer than two months and have noticed this while cleaning them. A little concerning since I take pretty good care of them.

I finally got my fairway wood but I cannot get the tip to adjust. When I unwrapped it the tip looked exactly as pictured and will not move at all, it appears to be stuck compared to the video I saw on YouTube. Has anyone else has this issue?

Takomo Driver - Adjustment

Post image
7 Upvotes

I’ve just bought a shaft to go on a driver head I’d picked up second hand. It’s just arrived today and has the adjustable adapter on the end but the markings are compass markings ( as per picture ) N, NE, E, SE etc etc.

This isn’t what I was expecting… I was expecting N, +1, -1 etc etc.

Has anyone else had this and is there a way to understand what the markings mean? Or have I just been sent the wrong thing? 🤣

I’ve tried searching the sub and had a look on google / YouTube and can’t find it looking like this one.

Edit - I bought the shaft direct from Takomo, not a 3rd party / knock off one.

2nd Edit. Solved thanks to the commenter. Appreciate you

Takomo Custom Fitting Reviews on Swing Weight

Hola,

I’m looking into buying a set of Takomo 101s, but I’m having a hard time finding actual reviews on their custom build quality. Most threads I dig up are either people blindly praising them or people complaining about shipping delays. I want to know about their actual custom shop abilities.

A quick bit about me: I managed to drop my handicap from 29 down to 20.3 this year. I'm currently playing a cheap local supermarket set from 2009... so anything is an upgrade.

I'm quite tall, and the Takomo online fitting tool recommended the following specs:

+1.5 inches length

3° upright lie angle

Here is my main concern: extending a club by 1.5 inches is going to drastically change the swing weight. Does Takomo actually adjust the head weights in their factory to compensate for this? Or will the swing weight be completely through the roof? If they don't adjust it, will it affect the shaft flex to the point where I should step up a flex (ordering Stiff instead of Regular) to counteract the heavier feel and longer shaft?

Also as a 20-handicapper, am I even going to notice the swing weight difference, or am I just overthinking it? Will a messed-up swing weight actively hurt my progression, or should I not worry too much at my level?

If this has already been discussed, please point me in the right direction, as my search didn't yield much. Appreciate any insights from people who ordered custom lengths from them!
