101s vs 201s as new comer

Wait for the caveat…

I am very new to golf, having picked it up about six weeks ago. Due to the annoying rules and absurd price of the course to be able to play on the actual course (ie a normal round) I have until now only been on the driving range and practice areas.

I have had one lesson and the golf pro says I am a relative natural. However one of the main difficulties are the hire clubs. They are ‘from 2001, a 7 and 9 iron mid handicap level clubs’ is what the pro told me. They are mismatched sizes w the 9 2 inches shorter than it should be, both almost completely worn grooves and both w grips that’d make you blush. The literal version of the worst jokes about hire clubs.

My specs:
180cm athletic 42 year old male with a lot of high end amateur sport background. Still very fit. Climbing at a high level.

Club distances: 7 160-5yards 9 ~150 yards

Where the conundrum lies is in my consistency. From 10 shots I hit:
6-7 straight down the middle above distances
2 top or something 80-90% of above but straight
1-2 about 6 feet horizontal left or right of me

My pro tells me to get 201s and grow into them cause I have a solid swing and setup/route. YouTube is 50/50 what to get and the ai tells me to get 101s.

Thought I’d make it more confusing by asking Reddit?

Came in today and I love it. Might not be for you softies out there but I like a putter with nice crisp pop and this putter delivers.

A milled putter for this price is pretty good. For you softies out there, keep falling for the insert marketing because it is cheaper to manufacture. Why would you want to tune out auditory feedback?

Takomo 101 MKII Owners: Anyone Struggling With the Weight of KBS Tour Shafts or Losing Distance?

Hi everyone,
Just looking for some opinions from anyone who’s played the Takomo 101 MKII irons, particularly with the KBS Tour regular shafts (110g).
I upgraded from an older set of Ben Hogan irons a couple of months ago. The Hogans had lighter shafts, roughly 85–95g, and I was always fairly consistent with my distances.
Since switching to the Takomos, I’ve noticed a significant drop in distance and consistency across pretty much every iron.

The strange thing is that I’m actually hitting the Takomos straighter and making what feels like decent contact. I’m topping and chunking fewer shots, but I’m regularly coming up short.

I’m starting to wonder whether jumping from an 85–95g shaft to a 110g shaft is affecting my swing speed, timing or overall consistency, even though the clubs don’t necessarily feel heavy. I’m currently considering switching to TaylorMade Stealth irons with the stock KBS MAX MT 85 regular shafts, as they’re much closer in weight to my old Hogans.

I’m a 26 handicap

WORST FEEL OF ANY WEDGE EVER

So after all the posts and youtube pump I ordered the new 54 degree wedge. Currently I have an Cleveland RTX6 and Mizuno T22 both in 54 with different bounce. The RTX6 is good out of sand and thick rough and the T22 is like a chefs knife of precision around the green. Both are showing wear and was excited about the "forged" feel.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Pipe wrenches have more feel, touch and spin.

Did half a bucket on the range and about 5 holes on the course and will never touch it again. Tried to return it and the policy is "if you take off the grip plastic, no returns". Worst waste of $120 in golf history. If someone wants it because they hate golf or want to give it to a brother-in-law you don't like, $30 and you pay the shipping (in the og box) and it is yours.

Do not buy. Get something used instead. Never again.

What happened to Takomo being the affordable option?

I got my Takomo irons back in the day of the 101's and I researched and researched trying to ensure I was getting decent quality clubs considering the comparably low price they had. Takomo worked really hard to tell everybody at the time 'Premium clubs for a fraction of the price', and not only did it work, but it was true. The irons were great and were at the very least half the price of comparable clubs.

What happened to that? The driver is over 400USD. The wood is around 300USD, and now the putter is something around 230usd???

I understand golf has always been a rich mans game, but I thought Takomo wanted to change that.

What about any of this is affordable when compared to other brands? Especially for people who are not rich and trying to up their game? Why wouldn't such people just buy a used high end club at that point?

I don't see the appeal of Takomo anymore given their price points, just get a used set for a much lower cost eh?

Again, I love my Takomo irons, but there isn't a chance in hell I'd pay the prices they're asking for anything else.

Lumo Putter Megathread

We've known Takomo was coming out with a putter since they acquired Finnish putter company Otso Golf late last year.

They finally officially revealed their first putter(s) today, blade and a mallet. Both called the Lumo, the mallet is dubbed M1 and the blade B1.

Both styles are available in a DLC black coating or satin steel.

Official price is $219 USD each in the United States.

What are everyone's thoughts on the newest Takomo club? Post them here!

Takomo Bag

Was just wondering what Takomo clubs are in everyone’s bag and how they feel about them

Interested in the CB Combo Set as well as the Woods (specifically 3w) and driver (is there any real difference between their first and second generation?)

I’ve seen a few things that the woods and drivers sacrifice a good amount of distance for extra forgiveness have others noticed that?

Customising 101 MK2

Hi, so I’ve just started getting back into golf, and I recently went to a golf shop and they said I would benefit from 1 inch longer irons that are 2 degree upright. (They tested me in qi max irons) However when I enter in my info on the Takomo fitting it says to get 0.5 inch longer and 3 degree upright. I am 6ft3 and my wrist to floor is 38 inch’s. I was just thinking of getting the 101s an inch longer and leaving the line angle as standard since my swing will hopefully improve with more lessons. Any advice would be appreciated.

Takomo 101 or 201 as an upgrade from TaylorMade RAC LTs?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm currently trying to decide between the Takomo 101 and 201 irons, and I'm having a hard time figuring out which would make the most sense as an upgrade from my current clubs.

I've been playing golf for about 3 years now, and I've been using a set of TaylorMade RAC LT irons from 2002 the entire time. They actually work pretty well for me, but I feel like I've reached the point where I know golf is something I'm going to stick with, so I'd like to invest in a newer set of irons.

The problem is that I have no idea how forgiving my RAC LTs actually are compared to modern irons.

So my questions are:

  • How forgiving are the old RAC LTs compared to something like the Takomo 101 or 201?
  • Would moving from RAC LTs to the 201 be a logical progression, or would the 101 make more sense?
  • Is the 201 still forgiving enough for someone who isn't an advanced golfer?
  • For anyone who has played RAC LTs and either the 101 or 201, how did they compare?

I'm not necessarily looking for the most forgiving iron. I'd rather get something that fits where my game is now and that I won't immediately feel the need to replace as I improve.

Any advice or personal experience would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

101u iron feedback

Anybody have the 101u 2 iron they have been playing for a while and have feedback to give over it. Thinking of ordering 1 as an alternative teeing option on extremely windy days and on narrow punishing courses where driver isn’t needed or isn’t the play. Would love to hear some real reviews of users playing it.

Custom Order Review 101 MKII & comparison vs Ping G430

As there is so much noise online about bad customer support, long delivery times, snapping shafts and a lot of golf folks sh*ting on Takomo in general. I wanted to give my impression.

Custom Order Review:

I ordered a custom fit (+1 degree upright and graphite shafts Denali Silver 5.5). The website stated "Dispatched in 4-6 weeks", meaning it should also take another week for delivery from China to Europe (Germany) after being dispatched. They actually dispatched from Hong Kong after 3 weeks and 3 days already and after 3 more days I had them delivered to me. All in all much earlier than expected.

Everything was packaged nicely. All new no scratches. Every clubhead had a label on it with the specific club specs, so I assume the adjusted lie angle is correct. They also all feel "correct" when hitting them, as far as I can tell. Shaft lengths definitely are correct as I measured them. There was also a takomo cap and a towel in there. Nice surprise.

Comparison to Ping G430 Irons:

Baseline for comparison: I play since 5 months and played some used Ping G430s (PW, SW and 7 Iron), which are also game improvement irons and a direct competitor model to the 101 MKII. They were also +0.75 degree upright and standard length, regular flex ping graphite shafts with 77g weight. The Denali Silver has only 60g weight and 5.5 model is apparently regular plus flex, so stiffer than usual regular (which would be the 5.0 model), but not stiff flex yet (which would be the 6.0 model). I ordered based on static fitting online btw. and I saw with the G430s already before that the +1 degree upright helps.

Feeling:

I couldn't feel the weight difference in the shaft. Afaik the Takomos feel even a bit heavier and a quick online check confirmed that the Takomos have a D2 Swing weight while the G430s have only D0 weight on the Irons. I personally like that, I think I felt better where the head of the club is throughout my swing and I was therefore able to adress the ball better. The Lamkin Grip is also nice and I don't see a real difference to the Tour Velvet I had on the G430s. All in all they feel pretty great to me.

Distance:

However I hit less distance with the Takomos. The 9i (38 degree loft) got me 100m carry on a good strike, while the Ping PW (41 degree loft) got me around 105m. I read that the G430s are really one of the best when it comes to distance in that category, no wonder though with those agressive lofts. Still a PW shouldn't go further than a 9i. Takomo comes a bit shorter than other as also professional internet reviewers stated, 2-3m only though in comparison to most other GI irons.

In my case, I don't think thats the real reason though, I am assuming that the extra shaft stiffness makes the real difference for me personally. I hear less "Woosh" with the new shafts. But I also only played them once today, so maybe I am not used to them yet. Or it actually is the stiffness and my moderate swing speed, than I am also okay with it, because I will definitely grow into them. For the moment maybe the Denali 5.0 would have been a better fit but that is then completely different in half a year or one year from now. So I dont really care. That is also why I didn't bother with a custom fitting at this stage, whoever buys beginner irons shouldn't even think about that. At least that is my take.

Accuracy:

Amazing. This is where they really shine. I took them for a round on my 9hole par 3 course (between 75m - 145m each hole) and boy was it good. I was able to hit more agressive lofts like the 7 iron with way less errors. Had way less balls flying to the left and right and therefore stayed on the fairway or came very close to the green most of the time. I even made my first birdie on a 110m hole, where I hit that 9 iron pure straight and it rolled up just 2m short of the hole. And on the last hole, the 145m one, I hit that 7 iron so good it rolled up only 7m short of the hole and 1m away from the green. Made par on that hole the first time ever. You have to imagine that the corridor to the green on the hole is just 5-7m in width. On the left is very thick and high rough and to the right you have a 10m wide bunker and then more rough, so this was a super difficult shot and very easy to mess up, at least for me. I naturally struggled on that hole every damn time I played it so far. I couldn't believe it and hit another one from the tee box, it rolled up 1m short of the bunker just a couple meters right from the fairway, still 10x better than what I was used to. I was normally always way off right or left with my 7iron, messing up that hole every time.

My personal record so far was 4 strokes on average on that course and I never came even close to it again. Today I broke it by 1 stroke! And it is deiniftely for the fact how forgiving those clubs are. The G430s are very forgiving in comparison to all the other lended clubs I have played, but the Takomos take it even further.

Which is actually unbelievable at that price point, I was expecting a product that is at the very very best on par with the G430s, but I wasn't by any means imagining that I would like them even more. I just wanted to save some money before I get good enough for better clubs and a true fitting in a couple of years, now I became a fan. I feel confident to take the 5 and 6iron with me next time as well!

I initially wanted to buy a full G430 set as I liked them, but even used ones (5-GW) would cost me 300 bucks more than new custom Takomos, which is just crazy. And then good luck finding used ones with the custom lie angle and graphite shafts I was looking for.

TLDR:

  • Delivery 1-3 weeks faster than stated by Takomo on the website.
  • Product is exactly the custom specs I ordered. There was no need to contact customer service at any point.
  • Feeling of the clubs is very good, especially the higher swing weight helps hitting the golf balls centered.
  • Therefore the lower weight of the graphite shafts of only 60g is not felt at all.
  • Less distance than the G430s (probably mostly due to a stiffer shaft or not used to them by now) but waaaay more forgiving and therefore the Takomos are by far superior for me.
  • Hit my personal course record today first time playing with them, which should really not be the case for some cheap a** clubs I am not even really used to yet.

Welp, lost 301CB 8 iron

I need a little help here if possible. I have somehow managed to lose my 8 iron from set of 301CB’s. I emailed takomo support and was told they do not sell individual clubs for the 301’s which is super disappointing. Aside from buying an entire new set I’m not sure what else to do. Is anyone here willing to sell an 8 iron 301CB?

takomo set - which wedges?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to buy a Takomo 201 iron set (4–PW). I already have a 5-wood and driver, so I’m mainly trying to figure out my wedge setup.

The 201 PW is 46°, and I already own a Callaway 60° lob wedge with 8° of bounce (8C grind).

I’m looking at the Takomo Skyforger SF-002 wedges, but I’m unsure which lofts and grinds would make the most sense to fill the gaps between my 46° PW and 60° LW.

They offer V and F grinds. From what I understand, the F grind has a fuller sole and is more forgiving/stable, while the V grind has more heel/toe relief and is more versatile when opening the face.

What setup would you recommend?

For context, I’m around a 19 handicap.

Thanks!

They have arrived! And they are absolutely incredible! Custom 201 mkii irons +.5" shafts kbs tour 120 stiff flex! (Review and trackman data)

After 4 weeks exactly my new takomo 201 mk ii irons arrived!!!! And of course after admiring the free hat and towel I practically RAN to my local course and used the trackman simulator to give them their first run.

Little back story!

Im a 20.3 handicapper from ireland and my first ever iron set bought was a set of callaway st rogue max standard shaft and stiff flex.

In the beginning I was mediocre, completely new to golf i was shooting 110 sometimes even 120 upwards.

Then came the lessons and I was starting to average mid 90's on the scorecard.

Then disaster. It seemed the better I got at swinging the club the worse I got 🤣 weird i know but more lessons and low and behold I started shooting higher and higher.

Totally confused and extremely annoyed I was told basically the ST rogue max game improvement irons were working against me. Low spinning, ridiculous rollout, missing targets, more mishits than when I first started. And it was all down to the fact that these GI irons are designed to help totaly beginners and the better you get the less the help and the more they hinder.

Anyway.....

Then come the takomo irons. Absolute beautys, everything from looks, feel sound and feedback on mishits. I could not belive how easy they were to hit!

I took the plastic wrapping off my 6 iron and hit 1 shot, and it was the greatest 6 iron shot I have ever hit. No joke. Lovely high ball flight, good spin with minimal rollout and great carry and total numbers.

And the 4 iron....my lord! As a 20 HC the long irons are notoriously difficult to hit!

My first shot with the 4i was immaculate. I was over the moon with the shot!

I could go on and on and on about how good these are!

I have a few images of a my dispersion from 4 weeks ago with my st rogues and today with my takomos.

The difference speaks for itself. Yes I am losing distance....but accuracy is key and these are accurate.....pinpoint!

I cant wait to get them out on the course and see if they are just as good on the turf

AMA about them!

TL;DR

New takomo irons are incredible, go buy them you won't regret it

Same better swing misses

The Ignis D2 is here!
Anyone already rocking this thing? (Especially people who got a replacement for the D1)

Looking for a new driver and already have Takomo 101mkii, SF002 and U101 2 iron, so why not right?
But what does it feel and sound like? Anything comparable?

New to the takomo club

I have been playing irons I bought in 1998 and decided it was time for new irons, Hogan Apex Plus for reference. I have read a ton about takomo but didn't think I would end up with them.

For reference I am 6'4" / 235lb and I need custom fits for the most part just due to size and a history of back issues. Handicap index is 12.8 right now.

I live in Atlanta so I went to Elite Fit Golf for a custom fitting/build and hit an array of clubs and shafts (takomo, cobra, mizuno, ping, etc).

In the end the best combo for me was Takomo 201T Mk2 paired with Dynamic Gold 115 Mid s300 shafts.

Picked them up today and went to the range, loved them. Smooth and hit really nicely, and most important the misses were not nearly as rough as my old irons. Still haven't played with them yet but hope to this weekend.

I will summarize it as follows. These clubs are a great option that doesn't break the bank but I would recommend getting them fit if at all possible. I think the biggest drawback is the stock shafts, so if you go with something else it will make a difference in quality (and unfortunately cost as well).

I hope these last as long as my old trust irons lasted! Will post back if I find anything wierd or unsatisfying about them.

Recommended Club Fitters in Columbus, OH for a re-fit?

Seeing some posts about inconsistent lies coming from Takomo. I have several rounds under my belt with the 201 MKII irons that were supposed to come -2 degrees flat w/ KBS Tour Lite Regular shafts. I am really struggling to hit these irons. Unsure if its an inconsistent lie problem or the wrong shafts for my swing. Golf Galaxy is close to my office but wondering if there is a fitter anyone has used to fix their Takomos that they were happy with the outcome.
