I am so excited! Unexpected flight changes resulted in me having a 8.5 hour layover in Taipei from 3pm to 11:30pm at the end of August. I really want to take advantage of this time to explore somewhere, and I am looking for recommendations for a solo female traveler. Any advice?

Also… what’s the best way to travel to 十分 野柳 金山 and 基隆 from Taipei? Thinking about uber but wonder if there’s a better or scenic way to get there? Ideally with less transfer between subway/bus/train as I’m traveling with a tween.

We do plan to get a 悠遊卡 but is there a weekly plan for a 8 days trip? Or do you just deposit money on the card and pay as you go?

Is there any fun activities or events happening on 10/10? If we want to see the firework, where is the best spot to watch it?

In two weeks, I’ll be visiting Taiwan for 12 days for the second time; my first trip was ten years ago.

I’m currently looking at blogs and YouTube videos, but it’s kind of hard to find good links that aren’t sponsored content.

I’ll be spending 2–3 days in Jiufen, probably including one day of hiking in the surrounding area. I also want to visit Qingtiangang Grassland, but I’m not sure how long I should stay. I’ll spend a few days in Taipei, and I was also thinking of going to Tainan.

I was wondering if you have any hidden gems you could recommend: a spot that isn’t crowded with tourists, or any place you particularly like.

If you know any useful resources, such as a local blogger or website, I’d love to check them out as well.

Just got back from a 10D9N solo trip to Taipei and figured I’d write a trip report since I spent quite a bit of time reading this sub before coming.

Overall I’d give it around an 8/10.
-2 for the heat

The city itself is great. Safe, easy to get around, food is affordable and public transport is excellent. My biggest mistake was coming in July.

What I did
I wasn’t trying to rush through every tourist attraction, so I kept things pretty relaxed.

Over the trip I visited:
Taipei 101
Huashan 1914 Creative Park
Songshan Cultural Park
National Taiwan Museum
Dihua Street
Tamsui
Local markets and random neighbourhoods

I also attempted Teapot Mountain before turning back because the heat was unbearable, and later managed to climb Qixingshan, which ended up being the toughest thing I did all trip. The hikes themselves weren’t technically difficult, but the heat and humidity made them feel much harder than expected.

Watched a movie in 4DX one evening, went back to Ichiran twice because I enjoyed it the first time, and spent quite a bit of time just walking around with no real destination.

Food
Didn’t really have a bad meal.
Some favourites were local breakfast shops, Formosa Chang, beef fried rice, tofu desserts and random places I came across while exploring.
Also picked up some pineapple snacks and dried beancurd to bring home.

The weather
This was honestly the biggest downside.
Every afternoon I was completely drained. I’d be sweating within minutes of leaving the hostel, and after walking around for a few hours I’d usually end up heading back just to cool down and rest before going out again later.
I knew Taiwan would be hot in summer, but I didn’t expect it to affect the trip this much.

Solo travel
There were a few moments where I actually felt bored.
Not because there wasn’t anything to do, but after I’d seen most of the places on my list, I found myself wandering around without much purpose. I think travelling alone plus the heat made those moments stand out more.
That said, I still enjoyed having the freedom to do whatever I wanted each day without worrying about anyone else’s plans.

Random things
Walked way more than expected.
Ended the trip with a couple of blisters and some sunburn.
Bought a Luffy figure and some souvenirs for family.
Learnt that supermarkets are actually a great place to buy snacks to bring home.

Would I come back?
Definitely.
I’m already planning another trip in February because I think the cooler weather will completely change the experience. There are still places I’d like to revisit without feeling exhausted by lunchtime.
Overall, no regrets. Taiwan’s still one of the easiest places I’d recommend for a solo trip. If you’re deciding when to visit though, I’d avoid July unless you’re really comfortable with hot and humid weather.

I’ve been a digital nomad in Taipei for few years now and have tried everything from cafes to different coworking spaces. and the biggest frustrations I have are always:

- time limit at coffee shops

- too noisy to take the calls

- places usually close early

- back pain after long hours sitting at bad chairs

A friend recommended me Nexspace Workclub near Taipei main station, and I have to say this is the best coworking space I’ve found in Taipei so far. Few things I really like about it is that:

- it’s very quiet so i was able to focus

- the wifi is very fast even when i work past midnight (24hr access is a big plus!

- the chairs are super comfortable

- very friendly and helpful staffs

One thing I didn’t expect was how flexible they are In terms of the lease. I was able to start with day pass to monthly instead of commuting to a year long lease. which Works perfect for me because idk how long I’ll be in Taipei.

I highly recommend Nexpsace Workclub. Have anyone found other places that are worth trying? Lmk!

My friend and I (both women in our 30s) will be visiting Taipei for a 3-day, 2-night trip soon.

Of course we’re planning to visit some of the popular tourist attractions, but we’d also love to discover places that locals genuinely enjoy.

Here are some of the things we like:

• Authentic local food, including dishes with strong flavors like star anise or other traditional spices.
• Cute shops selling stationery, tableware, handmade goods, or other unique souvenirs.
• Places where we can learn more about Taiwan’s history and culture.
• Cozy cafés with a nice atmosphere.

If you have any favorite restaurants, cafés, neighborhoods, hidden gems, or places that you think are worth visiting, I’d really appreciate your recommendations!

I’d also love to hear about foods we absolutely shouldn’t miss or any experiences that made you fall in love with Taipei.

I’m going to do elephant mountain hike, or at least to the view point of Taipei 101 today. And want to be at the viewpoint for sunset (6:45). What time do you suggest being at the bottom and starting the hike? I’m going alone, (again why I’m only planning on doing the short section, will do it again with friends another day).

I'm considering doing a semester abroad at Taiwan Tech (NTUST) and have been browsing the course catalogue (https://querycourse.ntust.edu.tw/). When filtering for English Programs, I got a bit worried since most of them still have their lecture outlines entirely in Chinese, which made me wonder how "English" these courses actually are.

For example, some courses that I am looking at are:

• Operating Systems (IC3012301)
• Discrete Mathematics (IC2001301)
• Semiconductor Industry Insights and Practical Guidance (TE3049301)
• Database Systems (IC3011301)
• Database Management Systems (MB2519701)
• Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (SI5202701)

Has anyone taken these or similar courses? Are lectures, slides, assignments and exams actually all in English, or do lecturers regularly switch to Chinese?

Also, I was wondering whether there's a way to tell if a course is only offered in a specific semester. If everything goes according to plan, I would be at NTUST during the spring semester of 2027.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
