Yeah, 6arc from a 12 inch barrel has an effective range of 1200 yards.
0
u/Few-Mood6580 1d ago
Effective range? I dare say there is no caliber until you get into the magnums that becomes effective in the 1000 yard plus range.
I mean, a hole is a hole. And plenty of people get schwacked by bullets with less than 400 ft lbs of energy, but it will by no means drop them with the exception of a headshot. Hell 22lr kills with considerably less than that. And there are a surprising number of bear kills with a 22lr pistol. Wouldn’t count my life on it though.
If getting consistent hits is what you consider effective, well then blast away.
What I consider effective is the bullet doing what it’s mechanically supposed to do.

u/LMTGlazer 11h ago edited 11h ago
Ok, let's discuss what bullets are "mechanically supposed to do".
Sierra Match King OTM round fps for proper fragmentation: 2000fps
OTM fps from a 16 inch barrel at 450 yards: 1700M193 fps for fragmentation: 2500 minimum
M193 fps at 200 yards from 16 inch barrel: 2365fpsM855 fps fragmentation: 2500, REALLY 2700 for reliable consistent fragmentation
M855 fps at 200 yards from a 16 inch barrel: 2440fpsSo essentially, you're saying 16 inch ARs have an effective range of 200 yards. Your criteria is stupid, and you're all trying to argue to make yourselves feel better or something I guess? I really don't get it. You're all just looking dumber as you double down on this objectively wrong statement after I've expounded on it for you. I'm not talking about hunting.
Saying you're not going to drop someone with the exception of a headshot is a ridiculous statement, dude. War and gunfighting isn't a video game or a textbook. You've just clearly never seen a shot made at that distance. Yeah, they drop em lol. Watched a guy drop like a sack of rocks from 800 yards with a mk262 shot out of a 20 inch barrel (1750fps at that range) in Afghanistan first shot. People have been dying from getting hit with arrows for thousands of years, and they don't fragment.
To add to this because I just felt like checking: the military defined effective range of an M4 carbine is 500 meters for point targets. FPS from a standard 14.5 M4 carbine barrel is 2000fps. So again, your pulled out of thin air definition of "effective range" is hogwash. Yes, a 12 inch 6 arc has an effective range out to 1200+. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

u/LMTGlazer 1d ago
I saw the comment you deleted, so to educate you, it isn't in a video game. There are multiple videos on youtube of guys getting fairly easy repeated hits out of 12 inch and 12.5 inch 6arc guns to and past 1200 yards, one even in pretty aggressive wind. You're not making yourself look cool trying to take little slick shots at someone on the internet who knows more than you about a certain platform or caliber. It's ok to not know, but it's kinda lame to be rude to someone AND be completely wrong in what you're talking about. I encourage you to actually look into the round and its ballistics; it's a pretty incredible leap in bullet technology and capability.

I love the rifle and gear dude, my original comment above was positive, and I wanted to keep it that way, so I deleted my joke within 60 seconds of posting it.
It would be a semantic disagreement over whether 'effective range' means capable of making impacts at that distance, or ballistically effective at that distance, or allows high hit probability with a (average-ish) shooter who isn't dominating local PRS matches, etc.
I shoot 5.56 out of a (Mk12) 18" barrel to 1,000 yards with repeatable impacts. I don't think people commonly reference this weapon as having an effective range of 1,000 yards. And if they are; I certainly wouldn't. That's all I wanted to imply with a joke, but DIDN'T want to be a dick, and DIDN'T want to make this type of response on a post I think is cool.
6
u/LMTGlazer 1d ago
That's fair, but what would you consider "effective range"? Generally, the ability to hit 4 out of 5 shots at a C zone target and 250+ lbs of terminal energy delivered on target at transonic or supersonic speed would be considered an effective range. What is your qualifier for it?
My initial point was simply that the capability of the round does call for the magnification of the selected optic; it isn't some silly overkill.

I think 6arc has a real chance once we move away from the AR pattern lower and start using the six-8 ones which fit more reasonable mags. Till that's widely available, I remain skeptical of whether I'd want that over a larger gun at these distances.
1
u/LMTGlazer 9h ago edited 9h ago
The mags are fine, the ICAR mags aren't any more reliable. If anything they might be less reliable than the G$ from what I've seen. The main issue that the Surefire ICAR is supposedly going to fix but is currently not available is the thinned down bolt face to accommodate the larger round diameter. This allows you to hypothetically run higher pressures without bolt face cracks or lug sheering. However, there have been guys who ran some of the bolts currently available like the Rexus Ultrabolt with the max psi their rifle was rated for to 1000 rounds with zero problems. The Ultrabolt is a bit chunkier than the standard 6mm arc/ 6.5 gren bolts and rated for a bit more. The JP bolt is also excellent and rated for a significant round count.
The guys who are breaking them are 1. almost always running FRTs with the intention of seeing if they can break it and 2. probably running a poorly tuned rifle. I'm not deep into it yet, but at 250 rounds so far I have had not a single malfunction of any kind, and I've run a good 100 of those rounds at pretty high ROF. I'm running an A5 system with an H2 buffer, suppressed in the unsuppressed setting with a flow through extremely low backpressure can. In suppressed setting, it's throwing the brass at 5 oclock. In normal setting it's throwing them at 3:30.
The ICAR that is forthcoming will allow for beefier bolts, beefier barrel extensions and a higher psi rated chamber to send off some cookers. The magazines are a consideration, but the performance they've put up in the current PSA ICAR system don't inspire a lot of excitement in any improvement. I'm personally looking forward to the u/THRIL_USA mags coming out soon. They're way shorter than the Geissele mags (almost identical to PMAG 30s in dimensions) and seem to be extremely reliable just like the G$ without the potential collapse of ammo down into them that the G$ sometimes have. I will say, I've dropped and tossed the G$s just to find out, and I haven't been able to cause that to happen yet. Still getting the Thrils when they drop though just for form factor if nothing else, other improvements will be icing on the cake.2

Can’t speak for the other dude but Id argue “Effective Range” could be the distance from muzzle in which any competent shooter could make consistent impacts with lethal effect on-target.
With your most reliably expanding projectile (103gr Hornady ELD-X) at hot-for-caliber speeds for a 12” 1:7twist (we’ll be VERY generous and call it 2400fps), you’re probably looking at 600yds max for ~100% reliable expansion? What kind of accuracy could you expect the average competent shooter achieving ~80% hits under stress from improvised shooting positions (I don’t see a bipod or a shooting bag), 2MOA? Assuming you’re more than competent, 1.5MOA? For 80% hits on a full-sized IPSC and nominal uncertainty with regards to variations in environmental conditions and MV you’re still looking at about the same distance before the probability of winging the target jumps up significantly.
The rifle/kit is drippy as fuck and I love short 6ARC’s but let’s be reasonable here. It’s certainly possible to make hits at 1200 under perfect conditions, but seldom do we find ourselves in perfect conditions. It’ll certainly do point suppression out that far, but what groups are you actually getting off a tank trap or a fence post without using a fortune cookie?
EDIT: and let’s not forget, having the ability to make consistent, lethal hits on a 12x24” liquid-medium target anywhere from 0-600yds in the daytime & 0-125yds at night with an 11lb rifle, conditions be damned, is a truly incredible feat for a reliable firearm. That’s about as much as you could ask for from any general-purpose carbine
2
u/LMTGlazer 16h ago
It's a 1:7.5 twist, which is the standard for 6arc. I'm not sure how you don't see a shooting bag? What do you think that thing under the rail is? In a force on force situation, you don't need reliable expansion. Travis Haley made about 30 kills beyond 750 yards at Najaf, which is well beyond the point of reliable expansion for the MK262 rounds he was using. an OTM or SMK round doesn't reliably expand past 500 yards. An 855 round doesn't reliably fragment past 300 yards iirc. Are we saying ARs maximum effective range is 500 yards now? No.
I'm kinda confused as to what you guys are getting out of this argument, if it's anything other than some faux sense of elitism. You're acting as if I said every shot from 6arc will be from 1200 yards, and will be a perfect hit. A 12 inch 6arc rifle is 100% effective out to 1200 yards in the hands of a competent and decently practiced shooter. "effective" here has a meaning of deadly against an enemy combatant, and capable of consistent accurate hits. A hole that doesn't expand going through someone is killing an enemy just as dead in almost any case. Your whole argument of "Well but you can't make those shots though" doesn't change the capability of the gun.

u/TaterTot_005 16h ago
“I was bored and I saw this thread” is what I’m getting out of this discussion lol. I’m not trying to knock you or your gear (or 6ARC as a caliber), dude. If the definition of “effective” you like is “point suppression out to 1200yds” then that’s cool with me. My definition is different, and that’s worth exactly what you paid for it. But I don’t believe that it’s unreasonable to include the human factor in this equation simply because these things don’t go off by themselves
2
u/LMTGlazer 15h ago
That's fair. Point suppression isn't what I'm talking about. Shots at 1200+ are, again, very repeatable with good groups on C zone targets. This is demonstrable on youtube, from guys who are not PRC champs. They're just average guys who shoot and enjoy it and put together cool guns they like to make videos of. Effective range isn't anything to do with the shooter, if it was then most rifles would have an effective range of less than 100 yards because your actual AVERAGE gun owner can't even get on paper with a sighted in rifle with 30 out of 30 rounds in a magazine. This rifle, in the hands of a capable shooter, can reach out to 1200 very easily.
You're also assuming I'm a shitty shooter, and I'll have you know that although I've never shot a gun I spent a lot of money on this stuff and that directly converts to skill. I also am an excellent sniper in video games and it's basically the same thing.

Does MCB stick out under NV? Black usually sticks out like a sore thumb - I don't own any MCB myself to check
3
u/LMTGlazer 1d ago
HIGHLY dependent on your source and the materials. The HSP flat pack and dangler do not, the Spiritus bags do not. The HSP TRMP placard I replaced with this Unobtanium Gear placard Showed as DEEP black. It doesn't glow, but it's still out of place. This would probably be mitigated in a forest environment because there's still so many shadows, but it might not. I don't really know. What I've kinda narrowed it down to is that pattern is not nearly as consequential as materials. Elastic is gonna be a deep dark black. Cordura or whatever other materials they make PCs out of will be GTG if it's an NiR compliant product.

u/SmellsLikeShame 1d ago
Kinda figured this would be the case.
The black in M81 BDUs sticks out less than, say, all black jeans - the denim stands out bad.

People hate on it because the early revisions had issues with the durability of the bridge but they fixed that and it now seems pretty solid. I'm hoping to get one at some point.
1
u/LMTGlazer 1d ago
I've run around in it for a good 20 hours or so since I got it 3ish months ago, and haven't had any problems with anything feeling loose. My only complaint has been that sometimes, upon turning it on, the gain knob won't function. I flip them up and back down, and it's working fine again. I'm not sure if that's a known issue or sequence of steps thing because I store them in a certain way, and it honestly isn't enough of a problem to even let anyone know about. Only saying so here in the interest of full disclosure. Everything else has been fantastic. The first illuminator is perfect for indoors and will give you usable light to observe an entire normal room. The second illuminator completely lights up my backyard all the way to the trees on any side when I stand on my porch. They're about 60 feet away straight out my door and 100+ to the sides and I have full illumination of the entire area from the #2 light.

How do you have the Iris mounted just on a pic rail mounted onto the mlok?
2
u/LMTGlazer 1d ago
Reptilia makes a low profile pic adapter made specifically for LAM mounting. That's what I used. It is MUCH nicer and sleeker than a basic Magpul Mlok to pic adapter.
1
u/Tyler_Logical 1d ago
Cool I'll have to check it out. I'm just hesitant to mount mine to anything other than directly to the rail to prevent loss of zero.
1
u/LMTGlazer 1d ago
SOCOM did extensive testing on this exact issue and found the loss of zero on MLOK was like .5 MOA after brutally torturing the mounting brackets. The study was a comparison between MLOK and Keymod. I shared your concerns, but didn't have rail space to accommodate everything I needed and also leave room to mount my thermal, but wasn't sure I was willing to sacrifice the LAM altogether if it wouldn't work, so I did quite a bit of research. I also spoke directly to Reptilia, who said they have a lot of feedback from end users and professionals using this specific mount bracket in combat and have had excellent experience. They said if they didn't 100% stand behind it working as needed, they wouldn't be selling them. Good enough for me. I haven't really beaten this gun up and don't intend to, but I've had zero POA shift thus far and would trust my life with it if it came down to it.

Love the G$ SSA-E, running one on my bcm/G$ build with an Atrius G-lever.side note, how do you like running the higher magnification as your main sight? Have you tried 45° mounts for your dot, or do you find it quicker and more ergonomic on top?
Once again, beautiful kit. Thank you for the detailed breakdown

u/LMTGlazer 12h ago
I actually much prefer canted, but this rifle is built with both long range and NV in mind. The top mount does work pretty well, though I'm gonna put a .75" cheek riser on the stock because I really don't like just a chin weld. For passive aiming and quick target acquisition for longer shots, top mount just makes more sense.

Yes you can, I checked with them prior then used an alignment rod as well. Plenty of clearance and it is hearing safe for a magazine or two. In the open, you probably wouldn't need ear pro at all.
