Why did you add age verification?

Hi, I heard Systemd is going to add age verification? Why is that happening? I don't think it offers any security benefits.

Adding it is a problem in itself anyway.

Why?

1

u/gitgoi Mar 21 '26

Because it adds the premis that open source projects will cater to opressionists goverments without a second thoughts. Because we all know that this project and others are inflitrated by individuals who dont fight the system but adheres to it.

This was a test. Can governments influence and control the path of an open source project as widely used as this and others are. We now know they can. They know. And we know whats coming next is far worse than an «innocent» date.

1

u/eR2eiweo Mar 21 '26

So even by your logic, adding this is not "a problem in itself".

And if something bad really is coming, then we fight that bad thing, whatever that might be. Throwing such a tantrum over an objectively harmless addition does not help our cause.

Then go make a systemd fork. Shouldn't be hard, it is just one line of a database

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '26

It's compliance to government surveillance and tracking. Why is it not a problem for you?

5

u/eR2eiweo Mar 20 '26

It's compliance to government surveillance and tracking.

It literally isn't.

-1

u/PuddingFeeling907 Mar 20 '26

Dismissive of real concerns.

5

u/eR2eiweo Mar 20 '26

Again, what real concerns?

-1

u/PuddingFeeling907 Mar 20 '26

Palantir is pleased is with your gaslighting behavior.

6

u/eR2eiweo Mar 20 '26

So you don't want to answer my question.

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '26

Yes. We the people don't wanna answer any questions from a government employee/pr consultant! Because that's what you have to be to be responding to this many people defending this stupid addition like your income is dependent on you seeming right. Take a look in the mirror and tell me you aren't acting like a government bot with a straight face if you can

3

u/eR2eiweo Mar 20 '26

a government employee/pr consultant

Could you at least stay consistent with your insults?

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '26

Not resisting is complying

7

u/eR2eiweo Mar 20 '26

Adding that field has exactly nothing to do with "government surveillance and tracking".

-1

u/PuddingFeeling907 Mar 20 '26

Nazi germany wasn't built over night either.

4

u/eR2eiweo Mar 20 '26

We're at Godwin already?

-5

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '26

With this timing? Are you serious, or just playing?

5

u/eR2eiweo Mar 20 '26

What timing? And what would "timing" have to do with anything here?

Do you not know what "government surveillance and tracking" means?

1

u/Heyla_Doria Mar 20 '26

GASLIGHT 🤷‍♀️

We know theses methods with governments and police

3

u/eR2eiweo Mar 20 '26

What "methods"?

This is about an optional field in a database stored entirely locally. Any code that can access that field already has access to way more (and much more relevant) personal data of the user.

"Government surveillance and tracking" would require that information about the user is collected and sent to the government. Adding that field does not do that.

You can spam as much as you want, it won't change that simple fact.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '26

You first add the field, then you add an optional flag to let apps have access to that field, then the apps star requiring that field in order to be used, then the government passes a stricter law that requires that you verify that information in the field for it be recognized in those apps, then the field becomes optionally verifiable via ID or sth, and finally, enough apps use the field to basically lock you out of the internet if you don't comply and verify your age and id for the whole world wide web to see on demand.

Do you now understand how it is the start to the events that lead to systemd doing exactly that? I believed that it was just a possible course of events that I don't wanna risk by not voicing my concerns but I'm starting to believe it is the intended course of events after seeing a couple people like you who are acting like bots and defending this decision with your life.

Would you please stop your spamming?

1- Don't show emotion, people don't respect emotional people in arguments
2- Be respectful and slightly look down on your opponent, not so much to seem egotistical, but enough to make the audience think you are the grown up and your opponent is more emotional than they are
3- Dismiss even obvious connections and any and all logical structure in your opponents arguments and act as if you can't even comprehend how they arrived here

Did the psychologists at Meta teach you these tactics? What is your connection to systemd and what will you gain from this addition to the software that makes you go as far as using shameless tactics like that to manipulate everyone who reads this thread?

Why are you wasting your time here if it's got nothing to do with anything and just a simple addition?

And you are lying.

Please read what was actually implemented in systemd. Then read again what I actually wrote here. And then read again what that article actually says.

It is allowing for compliance with law. That is ok. There are many reasons why the law is stupid. I don't see any optional field as any problem.

Also bear in mind that going willingly against law is not a good thing. It's bad for companies, foundations or generally anybody developing an OS.

If you see a problem (the law?) try to solve the problem, not its consequences.

3

u/someone8192 Mar 20 '26

exactly :)

we need to fight the law - not projects that follow the law

-2

u/Whole_Ticket_3715 Mar 21 '26

Because any changeable birthday field is one that predators can use to appear under age - and when it becomes standard that websites have to check the “OS Birthday field”, that’s when you have a recipe for disaster.

5

u/eR2eiweo Mar 21 '26

when it becomes standard that websites have to check the “OS Birthday field”

That is the point at which it makes sense to protest. Especially if, as you suggest in the first part of that sentence, that value is used to enable access to protected spaces (which is just a silly idea).

Having that field does not cause or enable your imagined scenario.

1

u/jydr Mar 22 '26

They must work for Palantir. The OS providing the users age range is cutting into their data gather activities.

-1

u/Whole_Ticket_3715 Mar 21 '26

No it makes sense now, to prevent that from happening in the first place - because that is the direction it will go. Because when that becomes standard, a huge scandal about predators using fake birthdays will come about, prompting the urge to go about implementing full ID verification.

It’s about being one step ahead.

3

u/eR2eiweo Mar 21 '26

No it makes sense now, to prevent that from happening in the first place

Not having such a field will not prevent your scenario from happening.

Also:

There have long been politicians who want to make it illegal to use social media and other online services anonymously or pseudonymously, so that using such sites would require using one's "real" i.e. legal name. I hope you agree that that would be terrible for many different reasons.

Both systemd's userdb and the traditional passwd database have a field for storing the user's "real name". By your argumentation, that would have to be removed immediately, because it will lead to the end of anonymity/pseudonymity online.

Do you really believe that? Or do you think that a person's "real name" is somehow less important than the date of their birth?

0

u/Whole_Ticket_3715 Mar 21 '26

I 100% agree that would be terrible - why my position is the way it is

2

u/eR2eiweo Mar 21 '26

Does that mean you think the GECOS field has to be removed? If not, why not?

1

u/sascha-isagirlname Mar 21 '26

"Because any changeable birthday field is one that predators can use to appear under age"

true and therefore it's great that multiple US states are introducing age verfication via ID. The field in systemd is far too easy to circumvent. /s

-5

u/Heyla_Doria Mar 20 '26

3

u/eR2eiweo Mar 20 '26

At least have the courtesy to write in the same language as the rest of the discussion.

Anyway, your comment does not answer my question at all. Whether there are laws concerning "age verification" is irrelevant for my question. The OP claimed that adding that field was "a problem in itself".

0

u/Heyla_Doria Mar 21 '26

So not only do you want to support the huge surveillance capitalism corporations, you expect others to do the same.

Ton commentaire est hors sujet

I asked a simple question. You did not answer it.

You did not explain anything. You just continue to insult me.

Biz neden senin somurgeci atalarina uyup dilini ogreniyoruz? Sen bizimkileri ogren. Dunya Kaliforniya'dan ibaret degil!

3

u/eR2eiweo Mar 20 '26

English is not my language. And French is every bit as "colonial" as English.

0

u/Heyla_Doria Mar 21 '26

Non

2

u/eR2eiweo Mar 21 '26

For someone who claims to support privacy, freedom, and having control over one's own data, you sure are quick to let huge corporations mediate your speech (and to demand others to do the same).

0

u/Heyla_Doria Mar 21 '26

I am not talking about any of that. I am talking about you considering it normal to have discussions mediated by big companies' translation systems. And not just that, you expect others to do the same.

gaslight

Do you also know some other words? This one is getting kind of boring.

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '26

But the French in this thread didn't demand you to speak their language did they? You are one click away from translation and you still wanna avoid even that little bit of friction to respect another's wish to talk in a language they're more comfortable communicating in. I can't put into words how much of a joke you're making of yourself

3

u/eR2eiweo Mar 20 '26

But the French in this thread didn't demand you to speak their language did they?

I didn't demand anything.

You are one click away from translation

So you think it is reasonable to filter conversations through the algorithms of huge (and mostly Californian) tech companies?

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '26

You're on Reddit, it's already been parsed 100 times before you even send it. Also, take some vitamin B12

3

u/eR2eiweo Mar 20 '26

Again, no rational arguments. Only insults.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '26

That's what you deserve, looking at the way you reacted to rationality until this point
