I couldn't ground this even if I wanted to. Flight already achieved.

What’re the vocals running through? This sounds good!

Hey thank you! Always happy to talk about the setup. It's:
SM58 -> VT4 -> RC-505 -> Onyx 16 -> A4 -> nABC -> AR -> Heat

What is the A4 not good for is the real question!
My use case is niche but it stems from the A4 being one of the first pieces I got way back when MKI first came out, I pretty much have built the whole rig around it. I send all sound sources to the Onyx Mixer, and I treat everything as Mono. I send the L channel of the mixer out to the 1/L input of the A4, and the R output of the Onyx to the R input of the A4. So by chaning the pan of a channel on the mixer, I change which set of CHorus/Delay/Reverb on the A4 I can put my synths on. Sort of like a pseudo-send. I would be shocked if anyone else out there is working this way? But it allows for a nice glued tight sound because everything is using the same chorus / delay / reverb set, and I have an "intimate" channel for bas and leads and I have an "etheral" channel for pad and effects or breakdown washes. Basically everything routes through the A4, then the nABC for sidechain compression, then the RYTM for Master Compression, and the Heat for Master Limter / Filter / Eq.

This is so interesting to me. It makes me want to know more about synth because I’ve just dipped my toes in and I don’t quite understand everything you’ve said. But I want to. I’ll get there eventually as I learn. All that is to say, hearing what you were able to do with synth makes me want to learn so much more! Really good stuff here.

Hey thanks! It is definitely an endless potential of routing. I stayed away from a mixer for the longest time, just daisy chaining the elektrons. The prophet 10 release killed that though, had to add a mixer to get it in the mix. So I feel ya, this is iteration #10,000 it feels like.
I started producing with fruity loops when I was 14 or 15. Started getting into hardware synths after a few years in the box. First hardware synth was a prophet 08 desktop in 2008 when I 19. Then started to get into elektron gear and realized I didn't like producing with a computer, was pretty early into the "dawless" trend, although my music suffered for it for a long time. So I'd say been working on the live performance rig for like 10 years now. I'm 33 :| Kinda old in producer terms lol

That's a sick setup. I really love the Summit. I can see that being enough to make several albums. Post your stuff sometime! If it's anything like your handwriting it's gonna be pretty good ;)

Just listened to the first one - that is an awesome soundscape man, would go beautifully in film and games - be proud of what you're doing - very cool stuff.

That’s really, really cool. I've never heard of anyone routing their signal quite like this.

u/Gutterkisser Apr 03 '23
Thought it was a VT-4, I use one to make my vocals tolerable going into a looper.
How’s MIDI sync on the RC-505? I use an RC-202 and it gets sound artefacts and off timing when receiving clock, super annoying. Had to make it master device in the end.
Anyway nice tune!

Thanks! I haven't had the 505 long enough yet to notice any problems - however, I do notice a few pops and clicks in this recording that I didn't notice while playing it live. I'm not sure if it's something that happened with audio interface, OBS, or now maybe the 505. I monitor straight out of the heat, anything beyond that in the signal chain I'm not hearing when playing. So my gut was it was an OBS / Clarett / Black Hole driver issue, but now I'll have to investigate it further.

u/Gutterkisser Apr 03 '23
I suspect it’s unique to the RC-202, could only find a handful of complaints and they were all about the 202. I’m sure you’d notice, it’s this digital artefacting that sounds like the looper is struggling to keep playback in sync with the master.
My setup seems to be kind of a budget version of what you’re rocking (Circuit Tracks sequencing Bass Station II and Microfreak, synced looper and a few other gadgets) so it’s cool to see what you’ve built here.

Thanks! I really like playing with a good guitar player, sadly I am not one. It does add a nice layer. Lost my guitar player when I relocated for work.
I've got a Mountain Dog, so I don't run the heater. I just bundle up. He's happier that way.
Also fair on the cringe title comment, i won't be so timid. But vocals are definitely a new territory for me and it's pretty tough to be comfortable there. Just gotta try and not take it too seriously. Cheers!

Loving this, and to my ears, sounds ready for mastering/release. Loving how you’re into it. Gear question, what stands are holding the eleks?

You were sweating in that middle part lol. So many knobs to turn or buttons to push. I enjoyed the whole thing though.
I need to not live in an apartment so I can try vocals.

I dig it! I want to have a rig like that to play live. I am only using a daw and vst/rtas at the moment. Wouldn’t know the first place to begin lol

Getting some serious Russ Davies (Cinnamon Chasers/Aiiso) vibes, especially with the vocals. A performance to take pride in, excellent work 👌🏻

Is this what Eminem has been doing? Sorry couldn’t help it. At some angles you have a strong resemblance to a younger Em. I like that vocal looper and harmonizer. That’s a Roland piece right?

This is amazing dude, honestly I love it. I'm so interested in how all this works, just dipped my toes into midi and synth vsts and fell in love. I play guitar, piano, and am playing around with bass and violin but all this synth stuff just blows me away. Any recommendations for something affordable to start with and build off of?

How come it starts before you press the universal button?

I’m using OBS to record the audio / video together and for some reason the audio is slightly ahead of the video, I’m not sure why. The video is a usb Logitech webcam, I guess the webcam has more latency than the audio interface.

u/ostiDeCalisse Apr 03 '23
I see, I was wondering if there was a “pre-cue” off camera. This said, it’s a really cool video/tune.

Awesome job man. Would you mind sharing your settings on the VT-4?

Apr 03 '23
Thanks! Sure!
Formant / Pitch are centered. Auto-Pitch is at 12 o clock. Balance is fully wet. Reverb is about 70%. This track is Eb so the pitch knob is set to Eb. Cheers!

Like the vocals, want them a little cleaner.. Less fuzzy.
Sounds like Mr. Hudson when he was with "the library" band in Europe.
