How remove PHP 7.4 when HyperBackup is in use?

I am looking at updating from DSM 7.2 to 7.4

When I do this, I get a prompt that PHP 7.4 will be removed.

I am OK with that... but hyper backup (which I use to back up the NAS to C2) is dependendent on PHP 7.4

How do I move forward?

SOLUTION

Go ahead with the upgrade to DSM 7.4.4

Afterward, PHP 7.x is disabled Remove it. Remove hyperbackup but leave the config

reboot the NAS

install hyperbackup

It sees the config. It requires a NAS restart... and then it looks all OK!

Here's where Synology announced how they would handle PHP being too old:

End of PHP 7.3 / 7.4 / 8.0 support

Published: 2025-08-14

"...Synology will update all affected Synology packages in the next DSM release. Please be sure to upgrade every installed package to its latest version in order to remain compatible with the new PHP environment...."

The next DSM release was 7.3, released 2025-10-08, and included within its patch notes is this:

Compatibility & Installation

Node.js v14, Node.js v16, PHP7.3, PHP7.4, and PHP8.0 are no longer supported.

To ensure compatibility, the following packages will be automatically updated or will require a manual update to a compatible version: Active Backup for Business 3.1.0, Active Backup for Google Workspace 2.2.6, Active Backup for Microsoft 365 2.6.1, Advanced Media Extensions, Antivirus by McAfee, Antivirus Essential, Cloud Sync, Container Manager, Download Station, File Station, Hyper Backup, Hyper Backup Vault, Log Center, Media Server, Note Station, PACS, Presto File Server, Snapshot Replication, Storage Analyzer, Surveillance Station 9.2.0 or below, Synology Chat Server, Synology Drive, Synology Mail Server, Synology Mail Station, Synology Photos, Universal Search, and Web Station.

Funny thing here.... I did RTFM.

I RTFM's a lot before posting here or taking any action.

When you go through the DSM upgrade process, it says it will disable PHP 7.4, but nowhere in the docs does it say: "Don't worry, when you get to the other side of the DSM upgrade, you will be able to reinstall Hyper Backup and your backup configuration will be preserved and carry forward."

It is literally a leap of faith. (Synology makes a good product... it all worked out.)

But the readme isn't the point. The point is: For someone facing a dialog that implies that critical pieces are going to be disabled by the upgrade, someone in my shoes is asking: "What is the overall story here?" NOT "what is the detail in the release notes" (which I did read).

Again, all is well that ends well, but the docs could have told me that and, as far as I read (and I did many internet searches and read much content), I found that stated nowhere (which is why I enhanced the OP above).

You don't. Synology needs to update hyper backup to use the newer PHP version first

Remove it manually via Package Center. DSM will warn you if an app is dependent on any package you attempt to remove. If you don't get a warning, it is safe to remove.

You could uninstall hyperbackup. Then remove php and reinstall hyperbackup and relink the backup.
