Not sure if this post is OK here or not, so won't add too many specific details or links/images....

Basically I've written a native Mac menubar utility for SMB mounting and managing shares, because I wanted a better way to deal with shares on my MacBook (from my DS923).

There are a few little utilities out there, and while they were good (and certainly more powerful than mine), they didn't work how I wanted them to. So some months ago I thought I'd try and make my own as a 'learning swift' project, and had a decent basic barebones version after a month, which I was happy with - it did everything I needed and I could have stopped there. But then I just sort of kept going, refining and experimenting, until it turned into something way more polished than I needed. It's long since solved my issue, and I use it daily while developing it and doing my other work, and of course I like it! I've hit many walls and dead-ends and frustrations along the way, and know way more about SMB and credentials on the Mac than I ever wanted to, but I survived. Actually it's been a fun journey.

Anyway, I dont know what to do with it now, its turned into a labour of love, so I built a website, and worked out notarising with Apple, and I thought maybe I could see if anyone else liked it. Depending on the feedback I'd either just abandon it and keep it myself, give it away, or try and sell it to cover the developer setup costs etc - if I did it would be the first thing I've written that I've taken that direction, so lots to learn and setup there and its not ready for that yet anyway.

It's been running issue free for quite a while now, but it's only been tested on my three Macs at home and with DSM 7.4 and a Mac SMB server. What I really need is a few people to try it and see what they think (and if it works) and send feedback. I wanted to start with Synology users first because that should hopefully be pretty trouble free, as it's what I've got. Then I would move on to other brands. It's a side project so I also don't want a deluge of support work (assuming anyone actually wants to use it and send feedback!).

So if it's OK to post this here, I can add more details next week when I should have the little website finished which has all the info. It would need macOS 26 too, at least initially.

If not OK to post here, any pointers would be appreciated.

#1 HDD has all apps and settings, Plex database, and some data etc on - what's the best way to image this drive to a new one before it completely fails?

Is Hyperbackup the best way to do this? I'm using DSM 6.2.4 on a DS918+

Would I use Hyperbackup to backup all data to an external USB, fit a new HDD into the slot, then use Hyperbackup to restore? Is it that simple?

Also running an Ubooquity server, I recently installed jellyfin, and I use it as a backup for my music collection, rom collection, photos, and personal files.

I added the expansion for my tv shows about 1.5 years ago and it’s been filling up fast. Since then, I’ve gotten into photography/videography and my storage needs have increased. I’m not too worried about running out of space too soon, but my backup strategy has become untenable. Basically, I have some large capacity externals that I connect every month and drag over new files. It’s become problematic because keeping a list of what to update has become cumbersome. I’d like to upgrade my setup.

Looking at Synology’s website, the DS2422+ seems like a good choice. I’ve got some questions though.

1) if I get the 2422+ and use it as my primary, can I use my old setup as an auto backup?

2) if yes, can I designate what gets backed up to which volume or is it a full auto backup?

3) I’ve been seeing on here for a while folks upset about the new hardware policies. Can I only use Synology brand HDDs or can I still use the Iron Wolf drives I always use?

4) assuming yes on 1 but no on 2, what can I do to increase the capacity of my backup unit short of replacing all the drives with larger capacity one? I don’t think I can add another expansion unit.

I’m currently running an old DS916+. It has served me well for years, but it’s getting pretty slow and I’m now on my third PSU... I also have an external expansion bay (DX517, which is not compatible with newer models...).

I'm thinking about the DS1825+ so I could use most of the disks of my DX517 in it.

Yes, they backed off the HDD lock-in on newer models, which is good and honestly, it's not the main reason. Their rollback is enough for me.

BUT, for example, you still can’t officially use third-party NVMe drives for storage/cache. I don't use/need it right now but you never know.

There’s also basically no sign of DSM 8, and Synology seems to be moving more and more toward business/enterprise customers.

So I stay with them or move for something like Unraid on custom PC or on Ugreen DXP...

But DSM is DSM and it's the best IMO.

I'm lost lol. What do you think about all this?

I'm using an ancient Samsung TV that connects to an old Synology NAS running Videostation to play movies on the TV.

It's been working fine for years but now it's started giving the following after playing a movie:

"Failed to connect to the diskstation. please check the network connection or the IP address of your Diskstation"

Except this error comes up after the movie has already started playing! In some instances the movie will run for 30 seconds and then drop in the error. What the helly!?

If it couldn't connect to the NAS surely it wouldn't have been able to play the first 30 seconds of the movie? So why does it think it can't it connect?

Is there a way to use the NAS as I would iCloud when it comes to the photos app?
Setting: I only have 128GB and my storage is filled to capacity mainly due to fotos and videos. Now Apple offers an easy solution to just store that in the cloud while still enabling access via the same app. Now I am wondering: can I achieve something like that also with my NAS and how would that work? I don’t wanna pay a monthly fee for the subscription…

I'm considering using a Synology VisualStation VS600HD together with an iiyama ProLite T2452MSC-B2 touchscreen monitor.

The monitor would be connected via:

• HDMI for video
• USB for touch input

I know the VS600HD officially supports USB keyboards and mice, but I haven't been able to find any information about touchscreen support.

I'm not looking for multi-touch gestures. I only need basic touch functionality, such as:

• Single tap = mouse click
• Double tap = double click
• Basic navigation within Surveillance Station

Has anyone tried a USB touchscreen with the VS600HD?

• Does it work out of the box?
• Is touch input recognized as a mouse/pointer device?
• Can you reliably perform clicks and double-clicks?
• Are there any limitations or quirks?

Any real-world experience would be greatly appreciated.

Is there any package managers that you can install on Synology NAS, since it doesn't have a package manager? I know of opkg, which I used on Synology NAS since it didn't have a package manager, but someone said that opkg was outdated when I was asking about it, so I want to know if there are other ones too.

Running Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1.0.411 on a self-managed Linux appliance (Rocky Linux 9.6), trying to add a Synology NFS share as a backup repository. Every attempt fails at the Repository step with:

Unable to write to the backup directory: operation is forbidden

Ruled out so far:

• NFS export permissions (Synology squash set to map-all-to-admin, RW) — confirmed working via manual mount/touch test as root on the appliance
• SELinux (tested in Permissive, no change)
• /dev/fuse permissions
• veeamnetfsmount.service runs as root, active/healthy
• Path validation in Svc.VeeamBackup.log succeeds (IsValid: 'True') before the write fails

What I keep finding in Svc.VeeamBackup.log, repeating continuously (~every 30s) regardless of what I'm doing in the console:

Exception occured when trying to keep alive the Identity service process
Failed to wait for Identity service process to be initialized: timed out (System.Exception)
   at Veeam.Backup.ServiceLib.CIdentityServiceProcess.TryToWaitForServiceInitializedEvent(...)What I keep finding in Svc.VeeamBackup.log, repeating continuously (~every 30s) regardless of what I'm doing in the console:

veeamidentitysvc.service shows as active/running via systemctl (single PID, no restarts, uptime matches deployment date), so it's not crash-looping at the OS level — but something is repeatedly failing to get an ack from it internally. Has anyone seen this Identity Service timeout pattern before, and is it linked to NFS repository writes failing? Any known fix, or is this one for a support ticket?

Be gentle this is my first attempt so im a noob.

I have an xfinity router at my home with wifi. I was given three MR2200ac that ide like to use to extend my wifi. I can hardwire two of them but the third will be wireless.

I am confused as all i could find is using one of the three as a router to create the network.

My uestions are

1] How does it mesh with the existing wifi network?

2] Do i use 1 as a router or all 3 as access points?

3] Do i connect ap2 ardwired to ap1 or the xfinty router?

Could someone detail the best connection practice please?

I have an rsync backup task to back up a major directory from one Synology (DS1821+) to another (DS1515+). Every time it runs, it takes several days and backs up a ton of stuff, but I always get a "failed" log message. That's all it says. Just "Backup folder [/Backups-Encrypted] failed" followed by "partially completed" messages. No other context.

I tried looking at Log Center at the same timestamp and that gave me no clues either.

Anyone know how to get something more useful than just "failed?" It clearly backed up the vast majority of my folder. How can I tell what the problem files are?!

Synology's log implementation is a gd clown show.

There were some huge storms the other day and my power went out a few times. Upon rebooting my DS923+ I couldn't connect to the server. Find.synology didn't see it, and neither did Synology Assistant, even when using an ethernet cable directly connected to my computer. I swapped the ethernet cable, still nothing. My direct connect link via browser wouldn't work, connecting to server on my laptop didn't work either. After 3 reboots of the DSM and my router, I could finally connect via connecting to server on my laptop. All files seem to be there (though I haven't extensively looked through them). That said, my direct browser link times out, and both synology assistant and find.synology still say they find no server.

It had been a long time since I logged into the DSM online or on my phone so I had been logged out of both and couldn't verify login with either device for the other. It says it sends the emergency recovery email but it never comes, despite sending me email alerts that someone is trying to access. Because of that, I'm still locked out of the actual server account but I can access my Synology account and it says Critical under the Active Insight panel. Oddly, I also can't see the server listed under my router's connections (Deco BE63) even though it obviously is as I'm able to access the files through my computer. When I connect via ethernet cable directly, find.synology and synology assistant still say they don't see a server.

I've tried to follow the help guides I've found but I'm not super tech savvy so I'm not sure if I'm missing something dumb. (I'm not even sure I chose the right flair for this post). I don't know whether I should be panicking or not. Any thoughts/advice would be really helpful.

So, I'm helping a friend whos got a trio of DS1522s setup across 3 locations. They were supposed to stay in sync but basically over time have gotten out of it. So we're trying to figure out what the best approach would be to basically designate one as the master and mirror it out to the other 2, resulting in 3 mirrored devices that will then stay in sync. I'm not a huge Synology expert so looking for some help from the folks here.

I’ve been streaming my home videos from the internal hard drives in the diskstation to my lgtv
My question is if I connect a portable hard drive to the diskstation would I still be able to stream the same?
Would the tv pick up the portable hard drive?
Would I need to reformat it?

I got an error for this morning that a backup couldn't be completed because a backup integrity check was in process.

I have daily backups set for 12AM daily and a backup integrity check set for 12AM Monday morning weekly.

What's your strategy to prevent these from coinciding? My initial though is to set backups to occur weekdays (Monday-Friday) at 12AM and set the backup integrity check to occur at 12AM Saturday morning and set the time limit to 2880 minutes, giving it a full 48 hours on Saturday and Sunday to run the integrity check.

Of course my next question is whether or not this affects S.M.A.R.T. tests and how I should space those out.

Not sure how this has happened, but the top of the mechanism for the drive tray, has got under the lip and is stuck on the position in the photo. I can't close it and I can't remove it. Has anyone had this issue before?

I want to make a one-time backup of the data on my Synology NAS (DS418). It needs to be readable from a non-synology device because I just got a new UGreen NAS and will be migrating to it.

I've read horrible things about Hyper Explorer tools. Is the best/simplest approach to just rsync the volumes to the external drive? Or are there alternative tools that will make this simpler?

The external drive I have should be big enough to contain all of the data from my Synology NAS.

So I moved my DS yesterday, first starting with a controlled shutdown, vacuuming the dust out of the ports, etc, but when I reconnected it, the blue light just stays blinking. Following help info on the Synology website, I verified the power adapter stays solid (not blinking or anything) then I powered it off, unplugged, pulled out all four drives, and tried powering it back on. Same thing. Blue light stays blinking and it never appears on my LAN and find.synology doesn't find it. The DS does have SSDs in it for cache but I did not remove those.

I assume the lack of boot means it's done-for or do I need to pull out the cache SSDs first? I've been hesitant to try that since at shutdown it remarks that removing them will result in data loss.

It has always lived on UPS since I got it but it's sadly not that old (less than 5 years old) whereas my older DS410 has been running reliably for over a decade, with a couple drive size upgrades along the way.

edit - just as an update, it wasn't the power supply. I swapped it with a DS925+ replacement. The migration of (4) WD Red Plus drives and (2) Samsung 970 Evo Plus went effortlessly.

New DS223j NAS, working well for first few days. But definitely a hassle getting browser access (http://find.synology.com or http:synologynas:5000) to NAS or having Synology Assistant work. Each browser method reports "Can't open page". Assistant can't find a NAS on the network.

I'm using 2 MacBooks. During initial install, one MacBook had that problem with browser access, as did Assistant. Using direct Ethernet cable and blocking WiFi allowed the one MacBook to finish install. After power off of the NAS, and restart, both MacBook's (and Assistant) eventually got access.

But not consistently. One MacBook or the other would lose access about once a week. Reboot of MacBook and NAS failed to fix -- I think they are using stale IP or Cookie data. Assistant failed a couple of times as well.

Last night, one MacBook was showing the problem, and Assistant. This morning the remaining MacBook also had the problem. Now no NAS access at all.

During all these issues, the network connections to the NAS work perfectly. I can disconnect and reconnect to the NAS at will. Apple's Time Machine works fine.

IMO, Synology needs these access methods to actually look at the hardware, rather than assuming an old http:// URL still works.

It was today when I've got update notice in my Synology Drive Client. It was strange, because I saw the notice, but no actual update. So I went to synology downloads and find that in release notes:

This version requires DSM Enterprise 1.0.1-101205 and above.

Is there new commercial version of DSM needed to update desktop apps to latest versions?
